Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A warm front will lift north across the area tonight followed
by a return to well above normal temperatures Thursday. Strong
low pressure will push a cold front across the area Thursday
evening with showers and thunderstorms expected. Seasonable
temperatures and gusty winds will follow this front for Friday.
Much cooler temperatures are expected for the weekend into early
next week, with highs and lows dipping below normal.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 945 PM Wednesday...The warm front has moved north through
Florence, Marion, Myrtle Beach, and the Sunset Beach CORMP buoy
just a couple miles offshore. Winds on Bald Head Island have
just turned south, but up at Wrightsville Beach winds are still
very light from the north. The front should continue moving
steadily north across the area overnight. Waves of light rain
mainly north of Georgetown, Murrells Inlet, and Kingstree will
probably increase in intensity and coverage between 2-5 AM as a
batch of more intense lift currently across extreme western
South Carolina moves across SE North Carolina. The last few runs
of the HRRR show this potential quite well, and rainfall totals
through daybreak across Lumberton could exceed one third of an
inch.

Low temperatures have already occurred at most locations and we
look for slowly rising temps overnight on southerly winds.

tonight as a warm front moves northward across the area.
Increasing southerly winds already observed at the offshore
buoys should spread inland after midnight. Moisture overrunning
the sloped frontal surface has led to the development of a band
of rain extending from the Pee Dee region of South Carolina
westward all the back into TX and OK where low pressure is
developing along the front. Changes with this early evening
forecast update were minor and mainly centered on higher PoPs
near Florence through the evening, backing wind directions along
the coast this evening ahead of the warm front, and small
adjustments to hourly temperatures as the front makes its way
inland overnight. Discussion from 300 PM follows...

Light rain continued to overspread the Forecast Area ahead of a
warm front. This front will be moving across the area later
this eve and overnight coincident with a shortwave trough. We
expect the combination of isentropic lift and this upper level
support to increase the coverage of showers. Rainfall amounts
will be on the order of a quarter of an inch into early Thu.
Once in the warm sector, there should be a lull in the showers
with the risk increasing later in the day Thu and Thu eve with
the approach of a cold front.

The low level jet will increase to around 50 kt on Thu and this
should allow for increasing winds at the surface and we should see
afternoon gusts of 20 to 30 mph. We continue to include isolated
thunderstorms in the forecast given the increasing shear values
noted on model soundings. Although instability continues to remain a
hindrance to strong or severe thunderstorms, it is not impossible,
given the strong wind fields in the low levels, for a very isolated
wind damage event Thu afternoon or eve. The SPC day 2 outlook does
include a portion of our inland areas in a marginal risk for severe
weather. Deep westerly flow aloft may help to limit rainfall amounts
ahead of the cold front, but given another mid-level shortwave
trough will be passing near and just N of the FA and precipitable
water values climbing to near an inch and a half, we did go ahead
and increase the POPs to likely or near likely for a majority of the
FA Thu afternoon and eve.

Lows tonight will be achieved during the first portion of the night
before increasing late. Lows are forecast to be in the mid and upper
50s with near 60 at the coast. Highs on Thu should be in the mid and
upper 70s, but an 80 degree reading is possible, especially across
the southernmost zones as 850 mb temps increase to 13-14C.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 PM Wednesday...'Wet Then Breezy and Dry' might describe
this period, as showers late Thursday, taper off in wake of a
sweeping cold frontal system. Powerful, deepening low off the
Mid-Atlc interacting with continental high pressure, will bring
rapid drying, with a pronounced, seaward-pointing, low-level
pressure gradient, tightening further through Friday. Does not
appear to be the caliber of wind requiring a 'high wind watch',
but gusts to 30 to 35 mph, especially near the ICW/coast, may be
expected beginning late afternoon Friday in NW wind.

Windshift/FROPA timing, around 9 pm Thursday evening along the
coast, with enough energy to include isolated TSTMS for the Cape
Fear region northward. Along with marked drying, cooler air
will follow in wake of the front, but the strongest cold air
advection will commence Friday night, with lows in the 30s
daybreak on Saturday, but above freezing in all or most areas
because of the wind. Friday afternoon will feel dry with MIN RH
values dipping between 25-30 percent. Main hazards this period,
are isolated TSTMS early Thursday, and gusty winds late Friday.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 300 PM Wednesday...Deep northerly flow between amplified
ridge to our west and deep low to our east will maintain dry,
cool and breezy conditions through the weekend. The 850 temps
remain at or below 0c, but as low as -5c on Sat, in this deep
cool northerly flow funneling down into the Carolinas. The
potential for frost will be low, as the air mass remains very
dry, but the threat of temps dropping near or below freezing in
spots, will exist with temps running below normal through the
weekend into early next week. Pcp water levels will be a
quarter of an inch or less through Monday. Even with plenty of
sunshine, though, temps will remain in the 50s on Sat and Sun.

By Monday, the air mass will begin to modify as ridge starts to
shift east and build from the GOM up the eastern seaboard. High
pressure will finally get squeezed out and shift off the coast
on Tues, leaving a brief period with a southerly return flow.
Temps will try and return toward normal, into the upper 50s and
then 60s on Tues, but cooler overnight temps will remain
through early Tues. A cold front will approach the Carolinas
Tues bringing clouds and increased chc of pcp. Dry air will
advect in on back end of this frontal system late Wed, but a
deep east coast trough will remain producing another cold snap
heading into Thurs.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 06Z...Warm front continues to linger in the area and is
wreaking havoc with the ceiling forecast. Currently not seeing
any IFR at the terminals and it appears the warm front has
cleared the coastal sites. MVFR/VFR conditions should dominate
areas within the warm sector. The issue for coastal sites is
whether or not the front sags back south as convection spreads
in from the west. Currently forecast does not expect the warm
front to return to the coast, but its return could lead to IFR
ceilings and even brief IFR visibility in the heaviest rain.

Inland sites are currently just north of the warm front with
widespread VFR ceilings. However, a little farther west IFR
ceiling and visibilities can be found. Convection spreading in
from the west will work to lower ceilings, and for brief periods
of time, visibility. MVFR is expected as this happens and
currently do not have any IFR conditions forecast. However, a
brief period of IFR visibility with the heavier rain is
possible. Forecast soundings do suggest a lowering of ceilings
during the next few hours, but point to all sites staying above
IFR.

Strong southerly winds across the region today with cold front
approaching from the west this evening. Line of convection
associated with the front will be strongest at inland sites,
weakening considerably by the time it makes it to the coast.
Lightning is unlikely but cannot be completely ruled out. Strong
southerly winds do suggest potential for wind gusts of 40 to 50
kt within heaviest showers. Frontal passage will be accompanied
by a wind shift and rapid drying/clearing.

Extended Outlook...VFR conditions Friday through Monday. Strong
winds possible through Saturday.

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 945 PM Wednesday...Latest buoy, pier, and coastal
observations show the warm front extends very near the coast of
Brunswick County and is moving northward at 5-10 miles per hour.
In areas which still do not have a southerly wind (Carolina
Beach, Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Island) look for this to
occur over the next 2-4 hours, with steadily increasing wind
speeds through daybreak. Stronger southerly winds over the Gulf
Stream and warmer waters >20 miles from shore have already
started building sea heights. Latest buoy reports show 4.5 feet
at the Frying Pan Shoals buoy, and 2.5 to 3.5 foot seas in the
nearshore waters near Cape Fear. Conditions should continue to
deteriorate late tonight into Thursday. Discussion from 630 PM
follows...

The warm front is located approximately 10-20 miles off the
Carolina coast as shown by increasing southerly winds at the
offshore buoys but light easterly winds on the beaches. All
models show the front pushing northward and through the area
overnight with these increasing southerly winds expected to show
up even at the beaches by midnight. Rain chances will peak in
the Georgetown/Murrells Inlet area this evening, but rain should
continue through a good portion of the night north of Myrtle
Beach through Cape Fear. Updates with this early evening update
centered on showing backed wind directions through this evening
ahead of the front. Discussion from 300 PM follows...

A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for all waters beginning
near daybreak Thu. An extended period of Small Craft Advisory
conditions are expected with a period of Gales possible Fri.

A coastal trough lies near and just inland late this afternoon.
A warm front will move across the waters this eve and
overnight. SE to S winds will veer to SW late tonight and
increase to 15 to 20 kt. SW winds will increase further during
Thu, reaching 25 to 30 kt during the afternoon with higher
gusts, especially across the outer waters. These winds will
quickly build seas. Seas of 3 to 4 ft this eve will build to 4
to 6 ft Thu morning and to 6 to 9 ft Thu afternoon.

SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 300 PM Wednesday...Increasingly treacherous marine
period, as Gale Force gusts come into play by mid to late
afternoon on Friday. This spurred by strong and deepening low
pressure off the Mid-Atlc, interacting with high pressure
working in from the west. As a result 'Gale Watch' flags have
been hoisted for all of our NE SC and SE NC 0-20 NM waters,
Friday 3PM to midday on Saturday. Advisory conditions will
precede this Gale Watch, and also keep in mind, the watch could
be upgraded to a warning soon. Latest wave guidance shows in
offshore flow, seas of 4-5 feet near shore, 6-9 feet beyond 7
NM, highest outer portion. Friday seas will build in developing
wind seas, with dominant periods around 6 seconds, making for
high wave-steepness. A few TSTMS are possible Thursday evening
over the waters.

LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 300 PM Wednesday...The weekend will start out with gale or
near gale conditions into early Saturday in strong northerly
flow between deep low pressure to the east and high pressure
building down to the west. Winds and seas will remain elevated
through the weekend as they slowly veer and weaken finally
heading into Monday. A Small Craft Advisory will remain through
much of the weekend into early next week Winds should range
between 15 and 25 kts with higher gusts. Although winds will
begin to diminish, seas will remain high, especially north of
the shoals, reaching up to 6 to 10 ft, in this strong NE push
on the back end of deep low pressure moving off in the Atlantic
waters to the northeast.
