  would be generally along and north of a line extending from 
  Great Bend to Salina. In addition to a few strong to severe

The Flash Flood Watch for a portion of South Central Kansas will
expire at 4 AM CDT early this morning. Widespread heavy rain 
threat has ended and therefore the watch will be allowed to 
expire.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tonight)
Issued at 327 AM CDT Sun Sep 2 2018

Active weather pattern setting up the next several days, with
periodic rounds of showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain
likely. Will issue a flash flood watch for this afternoon through
tonight for Barton, Ellsworth, Saline, Russell and Lincoln
counties.

Model consensus supports a solid signal for slow-moving and
training thunderstorms producing a swath of intense rainfall rates
anytime from mid-late afternoon through the evening. While the
exact location of this band of storms is uncertain, highest
confidence is somewhere north of a line extending from Great Bend
to Salina. The culprits are strengthening moisture transport into
a quasi- stationary boundary, amidst a deeply moist/unstable
airmass. An estimated 2-4 inches of rain fell yesterday evening
across the western half of Russell county, where the ground is no
doubt already saturated. Additionally, even though mid-level lapse
rates aren't quite as steep as yesterday, ample deep layer shear
and instability should support a handful of afternoon-evening
strong to severe storms, especially north of that Great Bend to
Salina line.

Model consensus supports this active weather pattern persisting
across the Kansas region through at least mid to late week, as a
slow-moving deep longwave trough spins over the central and
southern Rockies, ejecting periodic shortwaves northeast over the
region. Consequently, unseasonably rich and deep tropical moisture
will continue to spread north, enhanced by disturbances moving
north/northwest out of the Gulf of Mexico.

For Monday and Tuesday, with a lack of appreciable focus,
scattered shower/thunderstorm activity should be hit-or-miss
across the region, with high precipitable water values and weak to
modest instability supporting intense rainfall rates with any
activity that forms. For Wednesday and Thursday, a cold front
sinking slowly south across the Kansas region will provide more
of a focus for numerous/widespread showers and thunderstorms
areawide, with a continued threat for intense rainfall rates.
Model solutions diverge beyond Thursday, with the ECMWF much
slower than the GFS exiting the cold front east, which would
support continued unsettled weather possibly through next weekend.

Later shifts may eventually need to contemplate additional
flood/flash flood watches across all or portions of the area
anytime Monday and beyond, especially once confidence increases on
timing and/or location of expected showers/storms.

Convective trends are still the main issue. VFR conditions
expected outside of storms. Storms will continue to flirt with
KRSL and KGBD for the next few hours. Enhanced lift and veering
flow aloft will should lead to a few showers/storms a bit later at
KHUT-KICT in the 09-15 UTC. Isolated storms could develop in the
afternoon, but are more likely at during the evening, especially

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of Central, South
Central and Southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Thunderstorms remain possible northwest of a line from around Marion
to Kingman. A few thunderstorms may be severe with hail around the
size of quarters, winds around 60 mph, and locally very heavy rains.
Areas at greatest risk would be northwest of a line from Great Bend
to Ellsworth.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms are likely for most of the week.
While the thunderstorms may be quite strong with nickel-sized hail
and 50 to 55 mph winds, the greatest concern would be heavy rainfall
and associated flooding.

  tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from 6 miles
  southwest of Luray to 8 miles north of Hoisington...and moving
  northeast at 50 mph.
