.SYNOPSIS...A winter storm will move into the area from the north
on Wednesday Night bringing widespread precipitation and strong,
gusty winds Thursday across much of the region. Unsettled weather
and cool conditions linger through Saturday. A warm and dry trend
late in the weekend and early next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Some lower clouds developing towards the sierra foothills and
Tehachapi mountains from NW wind flow. Otherwise clear conditions
across central CA. Temperatures mixed in the valley near freezing
in clear areas and in upper 30s under cloud cover. Looking for
mostly sunny day with some high clouds pushing into central CA
from an upstream system.

Satellite images show the next storm system just off the Pac NW
coast. Precipitable water along the front range from 150-180
percent above normal. Models in good agreement with this weather
system coming down from the gulf of Alaska. Models in good
agreement with the timing. Precipitation should start late tonight
starting towards Yosemite and move south across central CA. This
system is expected to bring widespread precipitation across central
CA starting Thursday with precipitation expected to continue
through Saturday as several embedded shortwaves will move through
the base of the main trough. Strong pressure gradients develop
across the central valley as the initial front moves into N Ca
early Thursday. Thus strong gusty winds will be possible thursday
morning towards Merced before the onset of rain.

Forecast precipitation amounts are impressive with rainfall
amounts during this time frame with much of the San Joaquin Valley
expected to pick up between half an inch and an inch of rain
between thursday and late Friday Night while the southern Sierra
foothills pick up between 1 and 2 inches. The higher elevations of
the southern Sierra Nevada are progged to pick up between 1.5 and
3 inches of liquid precipitation with snow levels between 5000
and 5500 feet on Thursday lowering to 3500 to 4000 feet by Friday.
A Winter Storm Warning will be posted for the Southern Sierra
Nevada above 4000 feet from early thursday through Saturday
morning as moderate to heavy snowfall is anticipated during this
time frame. Some snow may impact travel over the passes in Kern
County by Friday Night as the colder air moves into the
Tehachapis. Saturday looks pretty cool and showery with a cold
upper trough moving over Central CA.

The medium range models are in fairly good agreement in moving
this trough east of our area by Saturday Night. High pressure will
push inland into CA by Sunday bringing a warm and dry trend into
early next week. Most operational models indicate another trough
moving into N and central CA in the middle of next week.

.AVIATION...
Mountain obscuration across the Tehachapi mountains and Southern
Sierra Nevada until 03z. Local MVFR conditions in the Kern County
desert and San Joaquin Valley due to scattered showers until 03z.
Otherwise VFR conditions expected across the remainder of the
Central CA interior during the next 24 hours.
