.SYNOPSIS...
Gentle to moderate trade winds and mostly dry weather will continue
through Tuesday. A strong high passing north of the islands will
bring strengthening trade winds beginning Tuesday night, with windy
conditions Wednesday and Thursday. The strong trade winds will bring
an increase in windward showers, with just a few showers
occasionally spreading leeward. Winds will ease somewhat toward the
end of the week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Island weather remains rather benign this afternoon, with a nearby
deep-layer ridge supporting an extremely stable and dry atmosphere,
and gentle to moderate trade winds. Afternoon soundings show the
base of a subsidence inversion between 3500' and 4000', and the
scattered low clouds arriving on the trade winds are barely able to
produce any precipitation with such a low and strong cap in place.
An E-W oriented surface ridge is just N of Kauai, and satellite
loops show the trade winds pushing scattered stable low clouds
toward the W over the smaller islands, with broken low clouds
upstream of Maui and the Big Island.

The weak surface ridge will continue to drift slowly N through
Tuesday, with trade winds continuing to gradually strengthen in
response. Limited rainfall is expected, even as the trades deliver a
few windward clouds.

A 1026 mb surface high currently to the distant NW will strengthen
as it tracks steadily E along ~35N, peaking near 1038 mb when it
passes N of the islands Wednesday night. This will lead to
increasing trade winds beginning Tuesday night, with windy
conditions Wednesday and Thursday likely necessitating a Wind
Advisory for at least portions of the state. A mid-level ridge
persisting over the islands will continue to support a stable
atmosphere, but an increase in low-level moisture and greater
orographic forcing supplied by the strong winds should lead to an
increase in trade wind showers. The strong trade winds may blow a
few stray showers leeward, but dry conditions will prevail.

A trough developing on the SW side of the quick moving high
introduces uncertainty to the forecast toward the end of the week
and next weekend, but a decrease in trade winds is anticipated as
the high moves to a position far to the NE. 18Z GFS continues to
indicate a stronger trough passing closer to the islands leading to
a significant decrease in wind speeds Friday/Saturday, while 12Z
ECMWF indicates a weaker trough passing farther to the N. The ECMWF
solution is supported by 12Z NAVGEM guidance, but the 12Z CMC
weakens winds similarly to the GFS. With the ongoing uncertainty,
the official forecast remains unchanged in anticipating that
moderate E winds will deliver brief windward showers through the
weekend.

.AVIATION...
High pressure north of the islands will maintain VFR conditions with
trades beginning to build. As trades return, clouds will form over
the windward and mauka areas, but few showers are expected
overnight. No AIRMETs are in effect or expected tonight.

.MARINE...
The northwest swell continues a slow decline. Nearshore PacIOOS
buoys have been measuring seas of 8 to 10 ft at 14 seconds this
afternoon, and NOAA buoy 51101, located 190 nm northwest of Kauai,
has been observing similar heights with decreasing wave periods of
12 to 13 seconds. A High Surf Advisory (HSA) is in effect through
tonight for most north and west facing shores on the smaller
islands, while the advisory has been dropped for all Big Island
shores. Border line advisory level surf is expected for the smaller
islands on Tuesday as the swell drops further.

A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) remains in effect through tonight for
hazardous seas up to 10 ft across waters exposed to the decreasing
northwest swell. While waters around Oahu and Kauai will likely be
dropped by morning, increasing trade winds has necessitated an
extension of SCA for the typically windy waters around the Big
Island and Maui for tomorrow and tomorrow night. A sharp increase in
trade winds will occur on Wednesday and Thursday, and the SCA will
likely be expanded to all waters, with gale force winds possible in
the Alenuihaha Channel. Trades will begin to decline on Friday.

The increasing trade winds will drive large and rough seas that will
likely require an HSA for east facing shores late Wednesday or
Thursday through at least Friday. A reinforcing northwest swell will
also boost surf along north and west facing shore back to advisory
levels on Wednesday. Models have gotten a better handle on the
deepening low currently located about 1,100 nm northwest of Kauai.
This feature is somewhat small, and it is racing eastward. As a
result, the swell will be rather short-lived, with advisory level
surf expected for north and west facing shores of the smaller
islands from early Wednesday morning through Wednesday night.

High Surf Advisory until 6 AM HST Tuesday for north and west facing
shores of Niihau Kauai Oahu Molokai and for north facing shores of
Maui.
