* IMPACTS...Extreme...Expect ocean water surging and sweeping over
  beaches, coastal benches, lava flows, and roadways, creating the
  potential for significant damage to coastal properties and
  infrastructure, including roadways. Coastal road closures are 
  possible. Large breaking waves may affect harbor entrances and 
  channels with significant damage possible to docks, piers, 
  ramps, and boats.

.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level low will pass by just south of the island chain
today through Friday, enhancing rainfall primarily across the Big
Island, with drier conditions expected elsewhere. A weak ridge of
high pressure along with a drier and more stable airmass will
then build over the islands this weekend, resulting in fairly dry
conditions statewide. The trades will pick up late Sunday through
early next week, as the ridge of high pressure builds north of
the state. A fairly dry airmass will remain in place however,
keeping showers light and limited primarily to windward and mauka
areas. A windy and wet trade wind pattern is then expected to
develop by the middle to latter part of next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Currently at the surface, a weak trough of low pressure is located
in the vicinity of Kauai, with light to moderate easterly trades
to the east of this trough and light to moderate northerlies to
the west of the feature. Meanwhile, a 1024 mb high is centered
around 1600 miles west-northwest of Kauai, with a 1028 mb high
located around 1750 miles east-northeast of the Big Island.
Aloft, water vapor imagery shows a closed upper low around 150
miles south of Kauai. Infrared satellite imagery shows partly
cloudy skies for most areas from Kauai eastward to west Maui,
with mostly cloudy conditions over east Maui and the Big Island.
Radar imagery shows scattered showers moving into windward areas,
with mainly rain free conditions over leeward locales. Main short
term concern revolves around rain chances and the possibility of
thunderstorms today.

Today,
The surface trough in the vicinity of Kauai will become less well
defined as it pushes westward, allowing a light to moderate trade
wind flow to overspread the entire island chain later this
morning. The highs to the west-northwest and east-northeast of the
state will shift further away from the area today, and this will
result in a slow but steady weakening of the pressure gradient
from northwest to southeast down the island chain. As a result,
sea breezes may develop over portions of Kauai and Oahu this
afternoon, while light to moderate easterly trade winds should
prevail over the non-sheltered areas of Maui County and the Big
Island.

As for sensible weather details, showers are expected to remain
confined primarily to windward areas this morning, with sea
breezes then leading to leeward and interior shower development
during the afternoon hours. Attention then turns to the potential
for thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall in association with
the upper level low. The upper low is expected to drop steadily
southward through the period, reaching a location around 275
miles southwest of Kona by late in the afternoon or early in the
evening. The colder temperatures aloft associated with the close
proximity of the upper low, will likely result in some enhanced
showers across the island chain. Daytime heating in combination
with slightly deeper moisture over the eastern end of the state,
is expected to result in some heavier showers and thunderstorms
this afternoon, mainly over the Big Island.

Tonight through Saturday night,
A weak pressure pattern will remain in place through the period
as the two highs remain weak and displaced to the east-northeast
and west-northwest of the state. A weakening cold front will
approach from the northwest Friday night and dissipate just
northwest of Kauai on Saturday. As a result, the pressure gradient
will remain weak over the entire island chain with daytime sea
breezes and overnight land breezes expected in many areas through
the period. High pressure west of the state will edge closer
Saturday and Saturday night however, and this may allow a light
background north- northwest shifting to north-northeast wind
regime to overspread the islands from northwest to southeast.

As for sensible weather details, the combination of a light wind
regime, ridging aloft overspreading the state, along with a dry
airmass with precipitable water (PW) values in the 1.0 to 1.2 inch
range, should keep shower coverage fairly sparse through the
period. The exception may be across the Big Island tonight and
Friday, where deeper moisture along with the closer proximity to
the southward pushing upper low, may keep shower coverage a bit
higher.

Sunday through Wednesday,
Model solutions are in good agreement showing a weak ridge of
high pressure building north of the islands Sunday through early
next week. This is expected to reestablish trade winds beginning
on Sunday, particularly over the central and eastern islands,
with the trades strengthening to moderate levels Monday through
Tuesday statewide. A front will then approach from the northwest
Tuesday night and Wednesday, with a stronger high building north
of this front. This is expected to allow the trades to ramp up to
breezy levels Tuesday night, with windy conditions possible
statewide for Wednesday.

As for sensible weather details, a fairly dry trade wind pattern
is expected Sunday through Tuesday, with light showers affecting
mainly windward areas during nights and mornings. Shower coverage
should increase Tuesday night and Wednesday as low level moisture
increases due to the persistent trade wind regime. Showers will
continue to focus over windward areas, but the increasing trades
will likely allow showers to spread into leeward areas more
frequently as well.

.AVIATION...
A surface trough near Kauai will slowly weaken and drift westward
over the next 24 hours with lingering scattered showers forecast
this morning. An upper level low south of the islands will
produce enough instability for isolated to scattered showers
across the state. Scattered to numerous showers will develop over
the Big Island today along with the potential for afternoon
thunderstorms. Winds with be light northeast to east trade winds
along north and eastern slopes of each island with on-shore sea
breeze winds along south and west slopes of Kauai and Oahu.

AIRMET Tango remains in effect for Tempo Moderate Turbulence
associated with winds around the upper level low from Maui to the
Big Island this morning.

No other AIRMETs in effect. However AIRMET Sierra may be needed
later today for Tempo Mountain Obscuration over the Big Island
and Maui.

.MARINE...
Winds are expected to remain below the Small Craft Advisory (SCA)
threshold through next Monday. The current northwest swell has
increased combined seas to 10 feet or greater across waters
exposed to the swell energy. The latest observations from buoy
51101 show a significant wave height of 10 to 11 feet with a wave
period of 14 seconds, while the Hanalei buoy is 11 to 12 feet and
16 seconds. As a result, a SCA remains in effect through early
Friday morning for the waters around Kauai and Oahu, the Maui
County and Big Island Windward Waters, and the Alenuihaha Channel.
By Friday, the current northwest swell will likely subside, so
combined seas are forecast to briefly drop below the SCA threshold
over most waters. However, the guidance continues to show an
extra-large wintertime northwest swell spreading across the area
starting Friday night, so a SCA will likely be needed from Friday
night through this weekend for most Hawaiian waters due to
elevated seas.

Surf produced by the current northwest swell will remain elevated
along most north and west facing shores of the islands. Therefore
a High Surf Advisory remains in effect through early Friday
morning for north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu,
and Molokai, and for north facing shores of Maui and the Big
Island. There is still a chance surf may reach the High Surf
Warning criteria over Kauai County, so we will be monitoring buoy
observations and life guard reports today in case we need to
update the status of the Coastal Hazard Message for those beaches.
The northwest swell is expected to begin subsiding later tonight,
but the High Surf Advisory will likely be extended into Friday
for many of the smaller islands.

The extremely large, long-period northwest swell mentioned above,
is forecast to peak Saturday night. Surf produced by this swell
will require a High Surf Warning for dangerous surf conditions
along most north and west facing shores of the smaller islands
from Friday night through Sunday. The north facing shores of the
Big Island will likely reach the High Surf Advisory threshold,
while there is a possibility portions of the leeward Big Island
coastline may reach the High Surf Warning threshold of 12 feet
starting Saturday.

A special note to property owners and others with interests along
sections of the beach exposed to the very large swell this
weekend: Preparation time is limited. This may be particularly
important for vulnerable sections of the coastline which have
recently had severe erosion from previous large surf episodes this
winter. The extreme surf produced by this type of event usually
generates well above average coastal overwash, especially when
the swell peaks near the time of the maximum high tide. For
example, along the north shore of Oahu the maximum astronomical
high tide of near 1.7 feet is around 2 AM HST Sunday morning.
