...STRONG SOUTHEAST WIND GUSTS EXPECTED TONIGHT AND MONDAY...

.A strong low level jet developing tonight and continuing into
Monday will lead to strong wind gusts on the western slopes of
the higher terrain in New Hampshire. The downslope wind gusts
will generally be in the 40 to 50 mph range, though localized
higher wind gusts are possible in areas of relatively higher
ridges or narrow valleys.

Later in the day as the low level jet increases in strength, some
of the stronger wind gusts will mix down along the coast north of
Portland. These stronger wind gusts will continue into Monday
night.

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will shift east today as low pressure slowly
approaches from the southwest. Low pressure over the Great
Lakes will drive an occluded front toward the region tonight
and Monday and will lift northeast through the region Monday
night. A broad area of weakening low pressure will persist over
the region Tuesday and will shift east on Wednesday. Another
area of low pressure will approach from the west Wednesday night
and will move east through the region on Thursday. Low pressure
will slowly shift east into the maritimes Thursday night and
Friday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Update...Nearly uniform temps in the 20s across the forecast
area this morning creating a mid winter feel. Mid level warm
front remains draped across the center of the area...more or
less stationary. As high pressure builds over the top of the
region...NE flow will increase. Very dry air is in place over
The County...and that is already bleeding into NErn zones...with
AUG and WVL dewpoints in the single digits. Farther NE dewpoints
are near to below zero. This will help erode precip thru the
day...and the front will gradually retreat towards SWrn NH. I
have adjusted PoP for expected trends...along with ptype based
on latest observations. The deepest warm air is mainly across
Srn NH...leading to some freezing rain reports...but precip is
also the lightest in that area. Ice amounts will be light as
well...but keep untreated and elevated surfaces slick enough to
continue advisories.

Prev Disc...
Very complex and rare freezing rain forecast for today across
portions of the forecast area. Light precipitation continues to
rotate over the top of the upper level ridge and into New
Hampshire and portions of Western Maine. Much of this
precipitation will fall in the form of freezing rain as
temperatures aloft warm enough to support liquid precipitation.
Meanwhile, temperatures at the surface will remain very cold and
much below normal for this time of the year. In fact, we expect
mini-max temperatures to be broken today.

Have issued advisories for areas of freezing rain over New
Hampshire and westernmost Maine. Precipitation should retreat to
just New Hampshire during the afternoon hours as dry air and
very low dew points continue to feed into portions of Maine.
Have therefore treated this initial winter weather advisory as
a separate event from tonight's expected precipitation.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
After a lull in the precipitation, more mixed freezing rain,
sleet and pockets of snow will overspread the region tonight. It
will remain well below normal in terms of temperatures. A warm
front will remain over southern New England while a
northeasterly flow continues over northern New England.

Low pressure will advance northward from the Mid Atlantic region
on Monday. This will bring a band of heavy rain which will
develop Monday afternoon and continue through Monday evening.
Areas of freezing rain may continue for a period over the far
northern.

Winds will become rather gusty as well, especially along the
coast and the southeast facing higher terrain. Wind advisories
may be needed in some areas as winds briefly align out of the
SSE late Monday/Monday evening.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Broad upper low will continue to drift east out of the eastern
Great Lakes on Tuesday. Any morning sun will quickly give way to
clouds and scattered rain showers in the afternoon. High
temperatures will range from the mid 40s to lower 50s.

Upper low will continue its slow eastward progress Tuesday night
and Wednesday. Tuesday night will feature mostly cloudy skies
with scattered rain and snow showers. Lows overnight will bottom
out in the lower to mid 30s. Another cloudy day on tap for much
of Wednesday but upper low will gradually lift out in the
afternoon and expect at least partial clearing by late in the
day. May see a few scattered showers in the mountains early but
the majority of the day should be dry. Highs will range from
the mid 40s north and to the mid 50s south.

Not much to look forward too in the latter periods of the forecast
as another closed low moves in from the west Wednesday night
into Thursday. After a partly cloudy evening looking for
increasing clouds and and scattered rain and snow showers after
midnight as weak low pressure moves in from the west. Lows will
range from the upper 20s north to the mid 30s south.

Thursday looking dull and raw as low pressure slowly moves east
into the region. Looking for occasional showers through the day
with highs from the mid 40s north to the mid 50s south.

Slow moving upper low will gradually drift east through the region
Thursday night and Friday keeping clouds and a chance of rain
or snow showers in the forecast through the period. Lows
Thursday night will range through the 30s and highs Friday will
range from the lower 40s north to the lower 50s south.

Cyclonic flow will persist over the area Friday night and Saturday
keeping skies mostly cloudy and temperatures at or below
normal.

.AVIATION /14Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Short Term...IFR conditions many areas today and tonight with
widespread LIFR conditions developing Monday.

Have added LLWS to much of New Hampshire in the latest TAF
forecasts for late tonight as winds aloft begin to increase.

Long Term...VFR with areas of MVFR ceilings and vsby in
scattered showers Tuesday. VFR with areas of MVFR ceilings
Wednesday. IFR/LIFR ceilings developing late Wednesday night and
Thursday.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Have issued gales for the upcoming system Monday
and Monday night. Strong southeasterly winds expected. Have
leaned towards strong gales with winds briefly approaching 50
kt over portions of the outer waters, slightly higher than
some guidance would suggest. Seas will rapidly build. Have
increased the waves slightly higher than Wave Watch with waves
briefly approaching 20 feet.

Long Term...
No issues expected.

.HYDROLOGY...
Still expecting 2"+ QPF on Monday and Monday night for portions
of Maine and New Hampshire. Coordinated with WPC and we are now
in an excessive rainfall outlook. Flood watches may be needed if
confidence levels increase that we can get additional snowmelt
from the headwaters. This may be challenging as temperatures
will be only in the 30s through Monday night over northern
areas. Nevertheless, there could be ponding of water in poor
drainage areas as well as river flows near flood.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
NWS, USGS and NERACOOS wave runup forecasts showing beach
erosion and splash-over for the Monday midday tide as well as
the tide around midnight Monday night. Current storm surge
forecasts by the latest ETSS/ESTOFS keep Portland, Fort Point
and Hampton below flood stage. However, could see some pooling
of water where splash-over occurs.
