.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure will develop near southern New England tonight and
move north along the Maine coast into Saturday. Rain and snow
will overspread the region this evening, and will leave a fresh
blanket of snow in the mountains by Saturday morning. This
system will exit into the Maritimes Saturday followed by cold,
gusty northwest winds. Yet another coastal low will move
northeast along the Eastern Seaboard early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Update...Based on dual-pol variables...snowfall is holding
across the ME foothills. CC is showing warmer air trying to work
Nwd...but strongest lift of the evening along with some melting
is helping to cool the column and delay arrival. I have dropped
temps across much of Wrn ME interior...and expanded snow in the
wx grids. On the fringes I do not expect much accumulation...but
this does push accumulating snow Swd into Srn
Oxford...Franklin...and Somerset Counties. I also expect that
higher terrain parts of Cumberland...Androscoggin...and Kennebec
will see some minor accumulations.
Latest runs of the HRRR support this delay of warming
aloft...with forecast soundings showing warm nose approaching
but not crossing 0C for a couple hours. I have based the
forecast largely on these hi-res models and radar observations.
Prev Disc...
Low pressure moving out of the Great Lakes will
bring widespread precipitation to the area overnight. A complex
forecast is evolving. There are two areas of pressure falls
associated with the developing system, one across southern
Ontario and a secondary area of development over Delaware. These
will further intensify and move northeastwards up the coast
overnight driving precipitation. Existing light east to
northeasterly flow combined with departing high pressure across
Maine and New Hampshire will help to create some cold air
damming along the coastal plain. While temperatures are above
freezing across the area currently expect them to drop back down
to near freezing across the region shortly after sunset.
With the near freezing air at the surface precipitation will
initially start as snow all the way down through the foothills.
At onset just after sunset strong upward motion combined with a
favorable temperature profile should allow for a quick burst of
heavy snow. However after midnight the developing coastal low
will help to drive warmer air aloft into the region changing
precipitation to a mix of sleet and then over to rain as the
700mb low aloft moves through.
Overall have kept the snowfall amounts largely the same. Have
lowered temps somewhat in the CT river valley where there was
not much sun today and the trend is slightly colder. This few
degree difference may be enough to pick up some additional
accumulation in the valley floor and have expanded the Winter
Weather advisory southwards into Southern Coos. There is a
chance for advisory level accumulations extending slightly
further south as far as Northern Grafton, Northern Carroll, and
Southern Oxford counties however with so much riding on the last
minute boundary layer temperatures have opted to keep this area
out of the advisory for now and allow the night shift to
monitor.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/...
The precipitation will come to an abrupt end Saturday morning
for all but the northern mountains as the low moves out into the
Maritimes.
As the pressure gradient tightens behind the departing low we
will see a period of gusty winds on Saturday. Mixed layer
heights indicate a brief window of time early Saturday afternoon
where wind gusts to advisory criteria are possible but
confidence remains low and so will not issue a wind advisory at
this time, however have kept gusts to 30-35kts in the forecast.
upslope showers will continue in the mountains through the day
on Saturday with some light additional snow accumulation.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The deterministic model solutions are in decent agreement on the
long wave pattern through late next week. We begin the period with
rising heights and a broad west-southwest flow as we're briefly
between upper troughs and under weak ridging. Ridging will bring a
cool...breezy and dry end to the weekend with a few lingering
upslope clouds across the higher terrain. The high builds by to
our south on Monday with the return flow introducing slightly
milder air to the forecast area. Low pressure takes shape over the
southeast CONUS Monday night then races northeast along the
coastal plain on Tuesday. The forecast column will initially be
cold enough for sleet or snow Tuesday...especially away from the
coastline. However...the inland surface low track will ultimately
wrap warm air into the area off the Atlantic. This should limit
any significant snow/sleet accumulation to the high terrain near
the international border where frozen precipitation will linger
the longest. We tap both Gulf and Atlantic moisture with this
system...with another one to two inches of liquid equivalent
precipitation likely. The ensemble river forecasts suggest
several rivers over the southern half of New Hampshire will rise
again to action stage or minor flood late Tuesday and Tuesday
night. Otherwise...much colder air wraps back into the area behind
this system with some upslope clouds and snow showers across the
higher terrain Tuesday night and Wednesday. A weak system then
crosses the area with some light precipitation late Friday and
friday night.

.AVIATION /05Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Short Term... Expect ceilings and visibility to rapidly decrease
after sunset tonight as developing low pressure moves up the
seacoast. Widespread precipitation overnight for all terminals
with rain long the coast and accumulating snow in the mountains.
Some isolated pockets of freezing rain and sleet are also
possible.
Long Term...
Sun...NW sfc wind gusting to 25 kt.
Mon Night - Tue...IFR with lcl LIFR in RA, SN and fog.
Sfc wind gusts to 25 kt coastal sites.

Short Term...Developing low pressure will move up the coast
overnight tonight bringing widespread rain and easterly flow.
East winds will reach near Gale overnight tonight before calming
in the early morning as the low pressure moves through the Gulf
of Maine. Winds will once again increase behind the system with
higher end Gale gusts possible as the low departs into the
Maritimes.
Long Term...
Sun...SCA's likely...with gusts approaching Gale outside the
bays.
Tue - Wed...SCA's are likely...with Gales psb outside the bays.

.HYDROLOGY...
Low pressure moving into the area will bring 1-1.5 inches of
rain. With rivers already running near historic highs for this
time of year across southern New Hampshire this rainfall will
likely be enough to drive a number of the river points to flood
and a flood watch remains in effect. There may also be some
isolated areal flooding tonight as the heavier rain moves in
with any clogged drains etc.
