.SYNOPSIS...
A secondary cold front drops south across the area tonight with
colder air following in behind it. Low pressure will develop
along a stalled front along the Mid Atlantic coast on Monday,
tracking northeastward into the Atlantic. As the system moves
northeast, scattered snow showers may brush the coastline Monday
night into Tuesday. High pressure will build in Wednesday. A
warm front will move north of the area Wednesday night and will
followed by a cold front late Thursday. High pressure will build
in for Saturday with an area of low pressure possibly affecting
the area Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /TONIGHT/...
1030PM UPDATE...
Only minor changes made to hourly temperature forecast.
Temperatures not falling as quickly in northern areas where
lower clouds are more extensive, so have warmed overnight lows a
bit there. Otherwise no changes were needed.
630PM UPDATE...
Updated the forecast primarily to refresh hourly temperature
grids. Secondary cold front is dropping south across the area
tonight with a north wind ushering in some colder air.
Temperatures will eventually fall below freezing just about area
wide by morning.
ORIGINAL DISCUSSION...
Cloud cover has been stubborn to move out of southern areas
today but should by this evening. Some upslope cloudiness to
continue in the mountains with a possible snow shower or two.
With cold air advection continuing, temperatures will drop to
more seasonable levels after today's very mild readings.
Readings will reach the teens north to 20s south by morning.
Warmest temperatures will be right along the coast where winds
will not allow for decoupling.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT/...
All models within the 12Z model suite intensify an area of low
pressure off the North Carolina coastline Monday morning.
Consensus is this system will pass south and east of the
benchmark Monday evening. During this period, there may be
scattered snow showers mainly along or near the coast. Dryer air
will be banked up to our north preventing the precipitation
from spreading across much of the region.
After seasonable temperatures on Monday, the low will departed
into the Canadian Maritimes as it continues to intensify. This
will allow colder air to enter Maine and New Hampshire Monday
night.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The long-term period will see a rapid progression of weather
system across the region with near to somewhat below normal
temperatures. With the fast flow pattern, weather systems will
have limited moisture to work with, so expecting very little in
the way of precipitation. However with frontal boundaries not
too far off the coast on several days, it's difficult to rule
out the possibility of a coastal storm development, especially
later in the period.
Low pressure moving northeast off the coast may bring some
light snow or flurries to the coast Tuesday morning before
colder air moves into the region behind the departing low. An
upper trough will cross the region Tuesday night bringing the
possibility of snow showers to the mountain.
A warm frontal boundary aloft will move to our north Wednesday
night and may bring more snow showers to the mountains. Snow
showers are possible in all areas Thursday and Thursday night
as a cold front approaches and crosses the region. Models show
low pressure developing along this front, but at this time, all
models keep this storm out to sea. High pressure will build in
behind this front for Saturday with another system approaching
the area Sunday bringing the possibility of snow across the
region. Models show a return to below normal temperatures for
early next week.

.AVIATION /00Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Short Term...Mainly VFR conditions as drier air continues to
enter the region tonight. High cloudiness on Monday will lower
and thicken to a low level cloud deck over southern areas
Monday night into early Tuesday as low pressure passes well to
our east.
Long Term...Mainly VFR conditions through Friday. MVFR
conditions possible early Tuesday along the coast...then MVFR
to IFR conditions possible in snow showers Wednesday night and
Thursday, mainly in the mountains.

.MARINE...
Short Term...Have raised SCAs for Monday afternoon through
Monday night for the outer waters as the developing area of low
pressure passes us well to our east. Gradient increases
sufficiently for the bays as well by Monday night, where flags
have been raised as well.
Long Term...SCAs likely early Tuesday and again Wednesday night into
Friday with gales possible during the day Thursday ahead of an
approaching cold front.

.HYDROLOGY...
We continue to monitor ice jams on the following rivers. The
Kennebec River near Farmingdale, the Pemigewasset River at
Plymouth and the Connecticut River at North Stratford.
Additionally, there are also ice jams on the South Branch of the
Piscataquog River in New Boston and the Saco River in Fryeburg.
At this time it does not appear as though we will get much in
the way of runoff to move these ice jam. We expect the jams to
remain in place for the foreseeable future. Please remember that
ice jams are unpredictable and can shift with little if any
warning. Even though flood watches are not in effect at this
time, people living and working along these rivers should remain
alert for rapidly rising water.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
High astronomical tides will occur this week. Low pressure
should remain far enough to the south and east on Monday and
Monday night to prevent any minor coastal flooding. By Tuesday,
nearshore waves will only be around 5 feet, however wave period
will be increasing to 9 or 10 seconds. Wave runup matrices
suggest there could be very minor beach erosion in isolated
locations, but again this is very minor.
Water levels will need to be monitored with southerly winds
ahead of approaching system on Thursday. Astronomical tides peak
that day (11.6 feet in Portland Harbor).
