.Low pressure developing east of Florida today will rapidly
intensify as it moves up the eastern seaboard to a position off
the New England coast on Thursday and into the Canadian maritimes
Thursday night. This storm has the potential to bring heavy snow
and strong winds...especially to coastal sections of western
Maine and New Hampshire where blizzard conditions are expected.
Some uncertainty remains with regards to the exact track of this

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak warm front will cross the area tonight accompanied by a
few clouds and mainly mountain snow showers. The cold will
ease a bit on Wednesday but we'll still be running well below
normal with temperatures remaining below freezing. Attention then
turns toward a low pressure system developing off the southeast
coast...that will affect the region Thursday and Thursday night with
the potential for heavy snow and strong winds. In the wake of
that storm...we repeat the pattern again with another shot of
Arctic air that moves in for the late week into the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...
Update...
Have updated the grids based on latest observations. A few areas
of persisten snow showers will continue across the mountains
during the overnight hours. Have adjusted snowfall forecasts
upward. Temperatures have already dropped below zero over
portions of central and northern areas. Have adjusted mins
downward slightly, however with the added cloud cover and
precipitation, readings should not fall significantly from their
current readings.

Prev Disc...
At 19z...a weak warm front was draped across the
eastern Great Lakes. GOES imagery showed a band of clouds
spreading into New England in advance of this feature and
associated shortwave impulse with NWS Doppler Radar mosaic
showing some light returns as well. For tonight...this boundary
will cross the area with some clouds...and a few snow showers
with light accumulations confined to areas near the
international border. Another cold night...but the clouds and
slightly warmer atmosphere should keep us a bit milder then last
night.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
On Wednesday...the calm before the proverbial storm as the warm
front lifts to our north and we're left under weak ridging.
Wednesday will be the pick of the week weatherwise as sunshine and
moderating 850 millibar temperatures allow the mercury to the
lower and mid 20s with teens across much of the mountains. It'll
seem balmy after the past week even though temperatures will
remain well below normal. A clear start then clouds will begin
streaming into the area after midnight. Snow will spread north
into southern New Hampshire and southwest Maine ahead of the
rapidly intensifying ocean low towards dawn.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
***High Impact Winter Storm Possible Thursday-Thursday Night***

High Impact Weather Potential:
* Near blizzard to blizzard conditions possible coastal areas
  Thursday-Thursday night.
* Bitterly cold Friday-Saturday with wind chill headlines
  likely

Pattern / Implications: Deep longwave trough anchored over eastern
North America...with upstream support provided in the form of a -EPO
pattern extending over especially the eastern Pacific...with a ridge
over trough setup in this region. This overall idea does not
change substantially through the long term forecast period with
any abatement to the eastern trough being rather transient as
shortwaves round the western ridge...and act to reinforce the
trough in the east. The most impressive of these waves comes to
start the long term forecast period as a pair of features
congeal off the southeast coast resulting in well-advertised
explosive cyclogenesis that rides north and east off the US East
coast. Beyond this...the trough reasserts itself through
Saturday with a return to bitter cold temperatures. The pattern
then looks to turn temporarily more progressive by the end of
this forecast period Sunday and Monday as a new round of energy
drops into the central portion of the United States...with
building downstream heights. Thus...the forecast period looks
active to start...with quiet and cold conditions returning for
the weekend....followed by some moderation to end the forecast
period...with potentially more active conditions given the
increasingly progressive flow by early next week.

The Details...

Thursday-Thursday Night:

All eyes on this period as pair of shortwaves phase over the
southeastern United States Wednesday evening at the base of
eastern U.S. longwave...rapidly becoming negatively tilted as
these waves round the base of the trough and lift north and
east on Thursday. Guidance has come into increasing agreement
over the past 24 hours although the idea of very impressive
deepening rates off the coast has been in place for days.
Consensus track places ~960 mb low about 125 miles southeast of
the benchmark mid-late morning on Thursday. The NAM is a western
outlier...pretty close to the benchmark itself....with an
overall slight westward nudge of the envelope since 12 hours
ago. This track certainly brings the Midcoast into play for
blizzard conditions and heavy snow...with the remainder of the
coast and areas further inland on the edge of the higher
impacts.

SUNY Stonybrook sensitivity diagnostics suggests there is actually
fairly little upstream sensitivity to the storm track which places
more importance on the diabatic effects occurring at storm center as
it explodes off the southeast coast on Wednesday.  Adding this
convective element certainly hinders confidence to some extent with
track changes on the order of tens of miles each cycle still very
likely going forward.  Still believe that as the northern /of the
pair/ of shortwaves drops further south and is captured by the US
RAOB network and improved satellite retrievals that we could have
one more cycle of a more robust shift in track.  Bottom line...this
is a terrific case of a forecast with high confidence low occurrence
and general track...but still low on exact details across our
forecast area...as tens of miles change in track will result in
drastically different impacts.

However...given the slight west trend today /including both the
12Z GFS and ECMWF/...and the fact that we/re 12 hours closer to
event start time...it is prudent to issue winter storm watches
for roughly the eastern 2/3rds of the forecast area and await
further model cycles to make additional headline adjustments.

Friday-Saturday: Low pressure lifts north and east of the region
with T8s falling into the -20s C on Friday...nearing -30C overnight
Friday night.  Strong cold advection will assist the winds on
Friday...with gusts over 40 mph looking rather likely...and wind
advisory level gusts (45 mph) not out of the question. Temperatures
in the single digits and teens Friday morning will not move much
through the day...then falling below zero Friday night.  Fully
anticipate the need for wind chill headlines no later than Friday
evening and certainly Friday night. Have highlighted this
potential in the afternoon Hazardous Weather Outlook. On
Saturday...the winds will come down a bit...but northwesterly
gradient remains in place with T8s reaching their lowest levels
/-2 to -3 sigma/. Thus...high temperatures look to remain stuck
in the single digits below and above zero from north to south
with enough wind to keep wind chill headlines in play through
the day. This sets us up for a bitterly cold night Saturday
night as high pressure ridge axis crests overhead. Lows in the
minus teens and 20s look like a reasonable start with local lows
likely to fall below this as long as winds/clouds do not become
an issue.

Sunday-Monday: High pressure pushes south and east of the region
with the coldest temperatures aloft quickly moving to our east. As
the flow becomes more progressive to end the period...timing
differences arise in the guidance...but there is general consensus
of both northern and southern stream waves nearing the forecast area
by the end of the forecast period Sunday night and Monday.
Thus...after quiet and somewhat warmer conditions Sunday...see a
renewed potential for precipitation /at least initially all
snow/ by Sunday night and continuing into Monday. &&

.AVIATION /20Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Short Term /through Wednesday Night/...VFR...a period of IFR
conditions is possible across northernmost NH and the western ME
mountains late this afternoon and evening in light snow. MVFR
dvlpg aft 10z Thu with lcl IFR SE NH and SW ME TAF sites in snow.

Long Term...A period of VLIFR/LIFR in snow/blowing snow and
strong winds is possible for all areas on Thursday-Thursday
night...with the greatest potential impacts along the coast.
Strong northwesterly winds continue Friday with conditions
improving to VFR. VFR conditions are expected to continue
through the weekend with lighter winds.

.MARINE...
Short Term /through Wednesday Night/...SCA conditions continue
through tonight for all waters except for Casco Bay. The freezing
spray advisory has been dropped as moderate freezing spray has
diminished to light freezing spray this afternoon. Quiet on the
waters Wednesday into Wednesday night before strengthening N to NE
flow brings rapidly deteriorating conditions in the predawn
hours of Thursday.

Long Term...Have hoisted Storm Watches for all waters except
Casco Bay /gale watches here/ for Thursday afternoon and
evening as a coastal low makes it/s closest approach. It is
likely that gale force gusts will continue well beyond the
Storm Watch period...potentially into Saturday.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Astronomically high tides will bring the threat of moderate
coastal flooding to coastal areas from Portland south and west
through the coast of New Hampshire. The greatest impact looks to
occur with the tide early Thursday afternoon...with some
additional impacts possible with the Thursday night high tide.
Have opted to issue coastal flood watches this evening to
provide an early heads up on this coastal flood potential.
