Area Forecast Discussion

357 AM EDT Sun Mar 11 2018

.SYNOPSIS...
A complex surface low will develop to our west today and move across
the forecast area later tonight and early Monday bringing widespread
precipitation to the region. As the low moves offshore, colder and
drier high pressure will build to our west late Monday and Tuesday and
persist through midweek. This will result in below normal temperatures
and a chance for additional snow flurries near the North Carolina and
Tennessee border.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 315 AM EDT Sunday: Unfortunately with the time change and the
complications of the forecast itself, the AFD is out a little late
this morning (and a frustrating 45 minutes in the making). We have
been talking about this nutty event for a week now, and just because
it's now in the near-term doesn't really make it any easier. The
synoptic setup isn't changed much from the previous forecast - but
what little changes there are have complicating results. We're still
dealing with the little cutoff diving down from the MO Valley toward
the TN Valley today, with surface low pressure lifting up from the
Deep South toward the upper TN Valley. Surface high over the Great
Lakes will ridge across the Central Appalachians and down the East
Coast, with onset of hybrid damming expected today. Isentropic lift
is on the increase this morning and so too will be pops as the
lifting warm front merges with the incoming wedge front. The surface
low will initially split into a Miller-B, but the coastal low will
rapidly yank all the energy away, resulting in a more Miller-A
looking event by Monday morning. Meanwhile the upper low/shortwave
will dive all the way toward Charleston SC by the end of the period
(00z Tuesday).

As precip overspreads the area today and the damming develops,
temperatures will struggle to get much warmer than they are right
now; instead remaining fairly steady-state through the day. After
midnight tonight, as the coastal low takes over, we'll start seeing
the colder temperatures filter in and the higher elevations should
start seeing a changeover. The problem is, changeover to what?
Despite very similar-looking pressure patterns, there remain a lot
of differences in important details; in this case, the NAM continues
to want to bring in a warm nose aloft as the surface temperatures
begin to drop to and below freezing, while the GFS is a little more
steady with decreasing temperatures simultaneously through the
column. With the lack of cold air ahead of the system, and the rain
we're expecting today, while we can't technically rule out freezing
rain, just think the chances of any ice accretion are incredibly
slim, and this is supported with WPC and even NAM deterministic p-
types. Sleet would be the most likely type of any mixed p-type, and
of course if we start seeing more sleet at onset before the 850mb
temperatures start dropping, this will impact snowfall totals more
than currently accounted for.

As we approach daybreak Monday, the deep-layer CAA will approach,
while the coastal low beginning to lift up the SC coast will begin
to scour out the damming. May see a bit of a lull in precip due to
dryslotting around the incoming upper low, but then the moisture
attendant with the upper low hits the mountains, and all guidance
has at least some of this breaking containment. The overall
progression of the system is a tad slower so have kept pops higher
on Monday. Temps will struggle to increase much on Monday except for
the Upper Savannah Valley and western SC Piedmont. The mountains
especially may actually see a slow decline through the day, but
those details are hard to pin down.

So between a difficult temperature forecast, uncertainty in timing
of pops and exact QPF, the snowfall forecast doesn't have the
confidence we'd like in the near-term. Even as it is, the going
forecast may be affected by any warm nose that does develop aloft
that could lead to freezing rain or, more likely, some sleet that
would impact snow ratios/totals, as was mentioned above. With that,
for the northern three (Yancey/Mitchell/Avery), have solid warning
criteria >3500ft, with 3-7 inches likely and higher amounts
possible. Have gone with a high elevation warning and a valley
advisory for these counties. For the rest of the mountains,
confidence is significantly decreased. The Smokies and Balsams have
the best chance of seeing the higher amounts, so have opted to do a
high-elevation advisory here. Madison and Buncombe are iffy, being
in the French Broad Valley, but it just looks better to include them.

I mentioned the possibility of breaking containment on Monday, and
all the guidance is pointing to some snow possible just about
anywhere. Currently, the surface temperature forecast does not
support it, but that doesn't mean that some snow can't mix in. The
NW NC Piedmont is of greatest concern, but *if* anything were to
happen there it would be Monday, which would be 3rd period (whereas
the current hazards begin in the 2nd period). This does allow some
time for the day shift to expand if necessary.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 145 AM EST Sunday: Upper-level forcing continues to wane early
Tue an occluded system continues east and then lifts northeast of
the FA. Deep layered flow becomes temporarily nw/ly while moisture
remains high in the llvls upstream of the NC mtns thru the OH
Valley. This moisture will lift across the wrn NC mtns and produce
continued -snsh before drier air works during the daytime period.
New snowfall amts will be arnd and inch to an inch and a half across
the favored upslope regions. The lull in activity will be related to
the upper pattern becoming rather zonal before another strong h5 s/w
increases lift and available moisture Tue night. Snowfall will begin
aft 00z Wed across the wrn slopes once again and will continue thru
mid-day as the upper energy traverses east of the region. Another
inch or so of snow is probable during this time. Drier air will
again work in from the northwest Wed afternoon and reduce snowfall
returns to nil by the early evening. A low-level theta/e airmass
will persist across the area Tue and become reinforced Wed
associated with the mlvl wave. Thus even with a good amt of sunshine
most areas...max temps will be held abt 10-12 degrees below normal
Tue and a couple degrees cooler on Wed. Mins will also be below
normal levels with sub-freezing readings likely all locales.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 320 AM EST Sunday: The ext range fcst has not changed much
from the previous package. Confidence reamins rather high in the
evolution of the large scale pattern and the smaller scale low-level
response. The upper flow becomes zonal to flat ridging Thu-Fri which
will help maintain a broad area of high pressure across the se/rn
CONUS. With deep downward omega indicated on cross sections...the
atmos will remain quite dry thru the column Thu with no chance of
precip. With continued insol...the llvl thermal trof will modify and
max temps will rebound...yet probably still a few degrees cooler
than normal.

On Fri...the sfc high center builds east and sw/ly return flow will
ensue allowing max temps to reach abv normal levels with a warming
trend continuing thru the weekend. An upper disturbance will
instigate weak cyclogenesis early Sat across the central plains and a
warm front will develop northwest of the FA thru the period. This
front will become fairly stagnant and isent lift within the warm
sector will increase over the FA. With a steady GOM moisture
supply...scattered to numerous showers are probable beginning early
Sat and continuing into Sun morning as a low-amp upper wave crosses
overhead. Instability looks low-end at this point...however with the
increasing sfc temp trend and marginal mlvl lapse rates...there
could be isol general tstms during the afternoon.

.AVIATION /08Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
AT KCLT and elsewhere: Generally VFR at TAF time with some IFR vsby
at KAND. Conditions will deteriorate over the next few hours as the
next round of moisture moves in, eventually dropping to IFR or LIFR
cigs and remaining there most of the day as -SHRA overspreads the
area, with only brief bumps up or down. Lgt/vrb winds at TAF time
will give way to NE winds 5-10kt through the rest of the period as
cold air damming develops across the area.

Outlook: Restrictions will continue into Monday, as a low pressure
system crosses the southeast region. Improving conditions are
expected beginning Tuesday with dry high pressure building in from
the northwest.
