.As high pressure builds in behind a departing cold front
tonight, very gusty winds will develop across the North Carolina 
Mountains and continue into Saturday morning. A chilly continental
airmass will then settle over the region late Saturday, bringing 
clear skies and light winds. Temperatures will fall to more than 
ten degrees below normal Saturday night into Sunday morning, 
likely dipping below freezing in most areas.

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will move through our region today, with cool and dry
Canadian high pressure spreading over the southeast for the weekend.
Expect the coldest night so far on Saturday night. Next week will be
chilly, with unsettled weather affecting our region at least in the
first half of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1240 PM: CAD still in place across the area. Back edge of
widespread showers moving out of the mountains at this time as a pre-
frontal wave crosses the area. Expect scattered showers to continue
before the front moves in and scours the wedge this evening. Still
no thunder despite the positive MUCAPE over the area. If any rumbles
to occur, they will likely be with the pre-frontal wave activity.
Expect the cooler temps to linger across most of the area with some
warming around the edges of the wedge. Still a raw rainy day.

As the front pushes through, winds will swing around to the west,
clearing out the foothills and adjacent Piedmont, with NW flow
lingering across the mountains. HREF especially is picking up on a
some showery activity breaking containment tonight and passing
across the Piedmont (specifically the Upstate), so cannot rule out
some sprinkles or light rain coming out of the cold air stratocu
that develops in the CAA regime behind the front. Of note will be
the winds with the strong surface gradient, perhaps enhanced by some
mountain wave activity. The northern mountains look pretty windy,
with momentum transfer hinting at some pretty hefty gusts (NAMDNG is
the highest with >60kt along the peaks from Grandfather Mountain
down to the Blacks). Also, the gap winds coming out of the mountains
will be kind of gusty...NAMDNG is also notable here, gusting to
>30kt across the Upstate, downstream from the French Broad Valley
(this is likely a bit high). With the current forecast, neither
winds nor gusts quite support a Wind Advisory, but the day shift
will have to take another look at that.

Aforementioned strong CAA behind the front will develop in earnest
late tonight, dropping overnight lows at least 10 degrees colder
than what we'll see this morning, with 20s in the mountains.
Piedmont areas that still have the frost/freeze program turned on
should stay above freezing, and with the strong winds and drier air
advecting in, there is little concern for frost. The overlap of the
moisture in the NW flow and the decreasing temperatures will allow
for a changeover to snow showers across the mountains late tonight,
but snow amounts should be pretty low with rapidly drying QPF,
generally less than 1/2" along the TN line.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
As of 230 AM Fri: Brisk winds will persist thru midday Saturday
as cold and dry high pressure builds into the area. The gradient
is progged to relax enough by early aftn that significant gusting
should subside; moisture is insufficient for any mentionable PoP to
linger after 12z. The cold advection will be reflected in max temps
trending several degrees cooler for the mountains, but downslope
warming and sunshine will result in Piedmont maxes being similar
to Friday's. As the high centers over the region Saturday night,
strong radiative cooling will develop, and most if not all zones
will see the coldest temps of the season to date. Looking back at
some verification stats, the bias-corrected ECMWF MOS did very well
leading up to the frosty morning of November 4. It is one of the
colder guidance sources for Sunday morning's mins, with guidance
overall trending colder. A freeze is looking increasingly likely
for most of our zones where the growing season is still considered
active. A Freeze Watch is being hoisted with this package. (November
11 does happen to be the last day of the season in the Piedmont.)

The sfc high will migrate to the East Coast Sunday and Sunday night;
the parent ridge axis being east of the area, return flow will
develop late in the day and continue into Monday, and the ensuing
warm upglide should generate ample cloud cover. Most guidance
now delays the onset of precip until after daybreak Monday, but
a slight-chance PoP is warranted late Sunday night, creeping in
from the SW. Though temps will fall back into the mid 30s along
parts of the southern Blue Ridge Escarpment, profiles suggest the
p-type will be determined by the sfc temps, so all rain is fcst
prior to 12z. As precip spreads farther north into cooler areas,
however, some freezing rain may result later.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 220 AM EST Friday: Beginning Monday morning, the medium range
forecast period kicks off with cool and dry high pressure leaving
the mid Atlantic coast to the east as abundant moisture approaches
from the Gulf ahead of low pressure. With cool air entrenched as
moisture increases Monday, expect a chilly, wet period with possible
wintry type precip early to midday for the NC mountains and northern
foothills. This would likely be in the form of light freezing rain
if the onset of precip begins soon enough. This would depend on how
soon the column becomes saturated enough for precip to reach the
ground as virga would gradually work its way down until finally
reaching the surface. Precip becomes heavier late Monday and into
the overnight, then tapering off early Monday as the low moves up
the mid Atlantic coast. Storm total QPF has from 1.5 to nearly 2
inches for most of the Piedmont and Foothills. This solution depends
on the GFS model which is more progressive and has dry air moving in
from the west late Tuesday and has NW Flow snow ending late Tuesday
night. We have very light snow accumulation early Tuesday night from
the Smokies to the northern mountains. The ECMWF has waves of low
pressure affecting our region through Thursday night. At this time
we are leaning heavily toward the GFS and the forecast could change
quite a bit as we get closer in the arrival of the low pressure on
Monday. If the GFS solution is the outcome, then cold Canadian high
pressure will build in starting Tuesday night with freezing temps
Wed morning, Thursday morning and Friday morning. Max Temps Wed and
Thursday would be nearly 15 degrees below normal. However, if we
trend toward the EC, there would be off and on periods of precip
through Thursday night. Based on the GFS, surface high pressure
would be centered over the Carolinas on Thursday with best
radiational cooling at night in nearly calm wind. At the end of the
current forecast (Friday morning) the GFS shows a significant
shortwave diving SE from the Great Lakes. Much can change in a week,
but interesting to see if this feature remains in some form.

.AVIATION /18Z FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Cold air damming firmly entrenched across the
area with generally IFR cigs and MVFR vsby and NW wind all but KAVL
where winds SE. Some breaks are occurring allowing cigs to rise to
MVFR and some heavier showers are causing IFR vsby and LIFR cigs.
Expect the current conditions to linger a few more hours then slow
improvement as a cold front moves in and begins scouring the wedge.
That said, sometimes conditions lower dramatically just before the
wedge scours but timing that is problematic. Will have to watch for
that however. Conditions improve more this evening after fropa as
gusty NW winds develop and low level moisture is pushed out. Gusty
NW wind continues Saturday with only some lingering low clouds
across the mountains.

Outlook: Dry and generally VFR conditions will continue through the
weekend, but another storm system will likely bring a round of rain
and restrictions early in the work week.
