...The Flood Warning continues for the French Broad River in
North Carolina...
at Blantyre affecting Henderson and Transylvania Counties.
Steady, moderate rainfall over the past 24 hours of 1 to 2 inches
has occurred over saturated soils resulting from well-above normal
rainfall since early May. Additionally, another 2-3 inches of
basin-average rainfall is expected across the upper French Broad
River valley through Thursday morning. This additional rainfall
will result in immediate runoff into the upper French Broad River
and associated tributaries, causing the French Broad River and
to rise once again towards Minor Flood Stage heading into mid-week.
Remember, river stage forecasts are based on observed and
forecasted rainfall. If actual rainfall varies from the forecast
values, the river stage will vary accordingly.

of farmland, recreational areas, greenways, boat access ramps, and
other low-lying areas especially adjacent to streams.
* Forecast: The French Broad River will rise above flood stage by
this afternoon and will crest near 18.0 feet by early
Wednesday afternoon. The river will gradually fall below Minor
Flood Stage by Friday morning.

Counties.
.Runoff from heavy rain will result in the river remaining above flood
stage. Since the river level has reached moderate flood level, tone
alerting may be appropriate especially with the new forecast going
for 19.2 feet as the crest. The crest will likely hold for quite some
time before trailing off to drop below flood stage early this weekend.

at Blantyre affecting Henderson and Transylvania Counties.
The heavy rainfall threat across the upper French Broad River
valley has ended, however, significant runoff continues into the
upper French Broad River and associated tributaries. The floodwave
has crested and floodwaters are continuing to recede across the
valley but scattered to widespread Minor flooding will persist into
early next week. Additional widespread or basin-average heavy
rainfall is not expected through mid-week next week.

highlight ongoing, but improving flood conditions across the

Warning will continue until flooding has abated. This prevents the
issuance of a new Flood Advisory, which typically signifies the
beginning of a new flood event. Additional widespread or
basin-average heavy rainfall is not expected through at least
Thursday.

.SYNOPSIS...
Abundant tropical moisture will increase over the area tonight
through Memorial Day as Alberto moves towards the Gulf Coast region.
Deep moisture will then remain in place through most of the week as
the Alberto remnants likely move northward well west of the
Appalachians. The potential for continued heavy rainfall and
associated flooding will persist. A pattern change might be in store
toward next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 655 AM: Shower coverage is beginning to fill back in from the
south as forcing remains weak but profiles are so moist that it
isn't taking much to generate some showers from time to time.
Otherwise, the 500 mb ridge will become resurgent over our region
today between the Alberto circulation moving through the Gulf to our
south and a northern tier trough well to our north. This could lead
to less activity than in previous days, however, any weak terrain-
induced lift at all will generate showers and scattered
thunderstorms given the moisture in profiles. Will thus continue the
high chance to low likely PoP for the afternoon hours across the
mountains and taper down accordingly to the east. Maximum
temperatures should be fairly close to climo this afternoon.
The mesoscale models all depict the shield of deeper tropical
moisture moving into the region during the early morning hours on
Sunday, with a few outliers, such as the NAM bringing back the
widespread tropical showers by evening. Between the moisture
arriving from the south and terrain flow triggering showers and
thunderstorms in and near the mountains, will feature likely PoP
north to categorical PoP south for later tonight. A Flash Flood
Watch will be posted starting tonight for much of the area. It may
need to be expanded or extended with time. See the hydrology section
for more information.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 345 AM Sunday: A potentially serious flash flooding and
landslide threat will set up over our area through the short term
period from Monday to Wednesday as deeper tropical moisture arrives
over the area and persists through mid-week. Anticipate that Alberto
will move northward across the Deep South Monday through Tuesday and
then through TN on Tuesday night. This will keep a moist upslope
flow going across the southern Appalachians through the period. With
precipitable water anomalies approaching or exceeding 2 to 3
standard deviations, antecedent conditions being sopping wet, and
decent upslope to focus the heavy QPF in our area, the Flash Flood
Watch will run into Tuesday morning at present. This will likely
need to be expanded and extended at some point.
The most intense period of rainfall, and perhaps even a low end
severe weather threat, could occur on Tuesday afternoon as the
remnant circulation makes its closest approach from the west. By
this time, the heaviest QPF should begin to get shared around the
southern periphery of the higher terrain, with the upslope focus
getting a bit relieved from the eastern escarpment but then
increasing across southern sections and especially around the
Smokies. Anticipate a smaller than climo diurnal range on temps
given the clouds and rain.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 400 AM Sunday: Deeper moisture may continue into Thursday,
however, the prevailing flow should become more westerly Thursday
through Friday as the remnant system gets absorbed to the north.
This will permit higher PoPs to continue mainly over the mountains
late in the week, but with above climo values throughout given the
abundant surface and boundarly layer moisture that will linger. A
trough crossing the region in northwest flow on Saturday should
usher in a pattern change and drier conditions. Max temps should
climb to about two categories above climo in the westerly flow and
wake of the subtropical remnants.

.AVIATION /12Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Scattered showers developing this morning
in the moist airmass should have fairly minimal coverage, so no
mention will be made at the TAF sites for now. Otherwise, expect
MVFR to tempo IFR cigs for a couple of hours beyond sunrise, as in
days past, with cigs lifting to lower-end VFR for the afternoon.
KHKY could see VLIFR to LIFR at times given the rainfall last
evening. Expect convective cumulus to develop with heating, but with
little more than PROB30 chances of showers and thunderstorms through
late day. The deeper tropical moisture will begin spilling back into
the region tonight, winds east of the mountains will adjust back
toward ENE, and rain showers will become widespread in the 06Z to
12Z time period early Monday and beyond.
Outlook: Tropical moisture will increase through Memorial Day and
then linger through at least mid-week. Showers and embedded
thunderstorms will become widespread and increase restrictions
across the region Monday through Wednesday.

The past 7 to 10 days of heavy rainfall across much of our forecast
area, particularly the mountains, has set the stage for serious
flooding and landslide issues to possibly develop with any tropical
rainfall through mid-week. Numerical model profiles exhibiting
precipitable water values over two inches and deep warm cloud layers
in excess of 12 kft will make for highly efficient heavy rainfall
processes and further increase the threat of flash flooding and
river flooding. The latest 3/6 hour FFG guidance values are
generally running 2.5 to 3.5 inches and these will be quite
achievable in the efficient heavy rain showers expected.
