At 357 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy 
rain across the warned area. 2-3 inches of rain have fallen since 
noon. Flash flooding is expected to begin shortly.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Lenoir, Morganton, Forest City, Rutherfordton, Sawmills, Granite
Falls, Valdese, Spindale, Gamewell and Boiling Springs NC.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross
water-covered roadways, bridges, or low-level crossings. Only a few
inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away your vehicle. It is
not worth the risk. Please TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams, highways, and underpasses. Additionally, country
roads and farmlands along the banks of creeks, streams, and other
low-lying areas are subject to flooding.

When it is safe to do so, please report flood waters or landslides
flowing over roads or threatening property to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free, 1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, by posting on
our Facebook page, or via Twitter using hashtag NWSGSP. Your message
should describe the event and the specific location where it

.SYNOPSIS...
A vigorous cold front will move through the area today bringing
showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be severe with
damaging wind, hail, and isolated tornadoes. Much cooler air will
overspread the region in the wake of the front on Monday with
temperatures warming again through midweek. Another cold front
will move through the area on Thursday, however this front is not
expected to produce much precipitation.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 1035 AM EDT Sunday: Initial line of convection has moved into
the CWFA much faster than the synoptic guidance or even the CAM
guidance suggested. The CAMs still haven't caught on to the faster
movement. Therefore, have sped up the convective onset but keep the
trailing edge of the precip on the slow side as there will be quite
a bit of precip remaining even after the stronger convection moves
east. SPC has increased the coverage of the Enhanced severe storm
potential given the increase in expected instability across the NC
Piedmont and Eastern Upstate. That seems reasonable, but the faster
onset of convection could limit this increased instability to our
east. Either way, severe storms still look likely with isolated
tornadoes possible mainly across the I-77 corridor.

Otherwise, overall synoptic setup for the chaos today has been
advertised for a while; strong closed upper low transitioning from a
neutral tilt to negative tilt as it moves across the MS Valley
today, with surface low over the Midwest and occluded front
stretched down through the Deep South. This will all push east
across the area today, with the best convection sliding through
during peak heating. Synoptic forcing is plentiful with the Southern
Appalachians in the right entrance region of the upper jet, very
strong dPVA with the deep trough, and plenty of diffluence aloft.
LLJ of 50-60kt will be slamming into the Southern Appalachians this
morning as well as it translates eastward ahead of the low; even at
925mb some indications of upwards of 50kt jet at least into the
Upstate. The ongoing high-elevation Wind Advisory for the SW
mountains still looks good as gusts could get hefty in these
locations, but with winds this strong at such low levels even
enhanced showers (much less thunderstorms) will be able to bring
some of these winds to the surface, so damaging winds is a big
concern across the area today.

Deep-layer shear will be impressive just ahead of the upper trough
axis within the upper jet, though the gradient is sharp and best
shear will not quite be collocated with the best instability.
Speaking of instability, however, this is the proverbial fly in the
ointment here. NAM sbCAPE progs are a little concerning, but luckily
seem a tad high with >1000 and over toward CLT >1500J/kg. GFS much
better with sbCAPE generally <700J/kg. SREF plumes and mean values
are higher than the GFS but do indicate the operational NAM is an
outlier. That all said, the definition of high shear/low CAPE is
<500J/kg, so anything above that and things start getting a little
less QLCS-ey and a little more supercellular-ey. Add to that the
enhanced low-level helicity this afternoon and evening as all
guidance is progging a lee low to develop across the W NC Piedmont.
HREF 24-hr max updraft helicity is really pinging this area, and as
a result SPC has upgraded a portion of the NC/SC Piedmonts to
Enhanced Risk for Day 1 with a 10% tornado probability. This
includes the Charlotte Metro area and the I-77 corridor, westward
toward Hickory and Spartanburg. Grids that will be published this
morning will also carry an uptick in wording.

We're not done yet though. Layer PWs of 1.5-1.6" across the NC
Piedmont and upwards of 1.75" in the Upper Savannah Valley are
higher than the daily max values at both KGSO and KFFC. With the
strong updrafts expected, we can certainly expect to see torrential
downpours with this convection. CAMs are still indicating the
potential for two lines of convection, though new HRRR is a little
less distinct with the 2nd line (which should be associated more
with the front itself). Basin-average (note these are large basins)
QPF continues to bump up a tad, with widespread 2" expected
especially over the NC Piedmont and pushing 3" across the NW NC
Piedmont/N foothills/upslope areas of SW mountains. Naturally, with
basin-average values like these, there will be some small basin
values that could be quite a bit higher, easily pushing 4+"
especially if we see some training. 1-hr FFG is generally 2-3"
across the area, and it is quite possible that the total basin-
average QPF values could fall within an hour in the intense
convection. WPC Day1 Excessive Rainfall includes most of our CWA in
a Slight Risk, with the exception of southern portions of the
upstate (not quite as influenced with upslope) and most of the TN
border counties (in the rain shadow). After collaboration with
neighbors, opted to issue a Flash Flood Watch for all the NC
Piedmont, the northern tier of Upstate counties, and the Upslope
mountain counties.

We're still not done. The front pushes through, the winds shift NW,
we still have moisture associated with the upper trough, and
whaddaya know but don't we have yet ANOTHER NW flow snowfall event
tonight. Amounts aren't all that much...maybe at most an inch in the
Smokies and other high-elevation areas along the TN border (though
the 90th percentiles with new ProbSnow data indicate that some areas
could see between 3-4").

Temperatures today will be highly dependent on any peeks of sunshine
through the clouds ahead of the front as well as timing of the front
itself, but should be much closer to seasonal normals. Tonight,
behind the front, should be a handful of degrees below seasonal
normals for most of the Piedmont, with the higher elevations
dropping below freezing. Winds will be too strong for frost, so it's
either a binary freeze or no freeze. With so much going on today,
did not spend a lot of time analyzing various guidance sources.
However, since the frost/freeze program has been turned on for the
SW Mountains (up to Madison/Buncombe Counties) and tonight's lows do
go below freezing, will issue a freeze watch and let the day shift
take a better look at temperatures.

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As of 250 AM Sunday: the short-term fcst picks up at 12z on Monday
with the amplified upper trof axis moving over the CWFA and taking
on a more negative tilt as it does so. Over the next 24 hours, the
trof will lift NE of the area and eventually well offshore by early
Wed. As it does, heights will recover and low-amplitude upper ridging
will build back over the region. At the sfc, the vigorous cold front
will be moving offshore by the start of the period. In the front's
wake, drier high pressure will gradually overspread the area bringing
much cooler temps and gusty winds from a tightened pressure gradient.
On Tues, the center of the high will settle to our south over the NE
Gulf of Mexico as low-lvl flow remains out of the west. As we move
into early Wed, the center of the high slides farther east as another
sfc low ejects out of Plains and moves towards the Great Lakes. The
front associated with this low is not expected to reach our area until
the early part of the extended period. As for the sensible fcst, the
period will be dry except for some lingering rain and snow showers
along the NC/TENN border. Any accumulations should be below Advisory
criteria. Winds will also remain gusty thru the period as the pressure
gradient remains fairly tight. In addition, low temps Tues morning
will likely be near freezing or just below for much of the higher
elevations. Thus, while a freeze warning may be needed, significant
frost looks unlikely as winds will remain gusty thru the period.
Otherwise, temps will warm substantially thru the rest of the period,
with highs back above climatology by midweek.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 240 AM Sunday: the extended forecast picks up at 12z on
Wednesday with weak upper ridging in place over the region and
another upper trof moving across the Northern Plains and towards
the Great Lakes. The latest runs of the long-range models now
have the trof becoming broader and amplifying as it moves over the
Great Lakes early Thursday, however most of its dynamic energy
still remains just to our north. The trof eventually drifts off
the East Coast late Fri into early Sat, as another upper trof
amplifies over the Southwest CONUS. At the sfc, high pressure will
be sliding off the Florida Coast as low-lvl winds back to a more
SWLY direction. At the same time, another low gets ejected out of
the plains and moves a cold front to our doorstep by late Wed/early
Thurs. The front is expected to move thru the CWFA on Thurs and
offshore by early Fri. In the wake of the front, high pressure
overspreads the area to end the period. As for the sensible fcst,
no significant changes were needed. The period is dry except for
some slight chance to chance PoPs along the NC/TENN border for the
next fropa on Thurs. Winds are also expected to be gusty as
the front approaches and the pressure gradient tightens. As for
temps, values will start out above normal on Wed and gradually
cool thru the period.

.AVIATION /15Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
At KCLT and elsewhere: Had to speed up the timing of the TSRA given
the convection moving in faster than expected. Haven't sped up KCLT
yet, but that may be happening on the next update. Widespread +SHRA
will overspread the area with embedded TS, while a line of +TSRA is
expected to move across the area. Have gone prevailing TSRA
everywhere for a period today, introducing TEMPOs +TSRA with winds
35-40kt at all sites except CLT (and did not do KCLT only because
the best timing looks to start around or just after 18z which is 6h
and cannot do a TEMPO then). Gusty S winds will continue through the
day as well. Improving conditions after the front moves through,
with winds veering around to NW at KAVL but holding off on most
other sites till after the end of the period. Will continue to note
that torrential downpours are expected with the convection today,
and cannot rule out small hail and especially within the SPC
Slight/Enhanced Risk areas, damaging winds and isolated tornadoes.

Outlook: Other than perhaps some lingering mountain showers, dry and
cooler conditions should return Monday and continue into mid week. A
drier cold front may arrive late in the week from the northwest.

of thunderstorms along a line extending from 5 miles south of Spruce
Pine to 5 miles southwest of Marion, and moving northeast at 35 mph.

Locations to be impacted include...
Marion, Spruce Pine, Crossnore, Linville Falls, B.R. Parkway-Linville
Falls To Grandfather, Lake James State Park, Lake James, B.R.
Parkway-Little Switzerland To Linville, B.R. Parkway-Craggy To Little
Switzerland and Nebo.

Wind gusts up to 45 mph will be possible in these areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

The combination of gusty winds and saturated soil conditions will
cause scattered trees and power lines to fall. Seek shelter inside an
interior room.

Torrential rainfall may flood areas with poor drainage, such as
ditches and underpasses. Avoid these areas and do not cross flooded
roads. Water levels of small streams may also rise rapidly. Seek
higher ground if threatened by flood waters.

At 1121 AM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 6
miles west of Greenwood, or 4 miles south of Hodges, moving northeast
at 25 mph.

Locations to be impacted include...
Greenwood, Laurens, Abbeville, Clinton, Woodruff, Ware Shoals,
Joanna, Gray Court, Cross Hill and Cokesbury.

At 1124 AM EDT, Doppler radar indicated the leading edge of a cluster
of thunderstorms along a line extending from 5 miles west of Marion
to 7 miles north of Rutherfordton to 8 miles east of Columbus, and
moving northeast at 35 mph.

Locations to be impacted include...
Forest City, Marion, Rutherfordton, Morganton, Spindale, Glen Alpine,
Old Fort, Bostic, B.R. Parkway-Craggy To Little Switzerland and Lake
James State Park.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph and very heavy rainfall rates up to 2 inches
per hour will be possible in these areas.
