A significant snow event is setting up for the southern third of
Lower Michigan late tonight into Friday. Travel along the
Interstate 94 corridor between Detroit and Chicago will become
very hazardous on Friday with 6 to 10 inches of accumulation
expected. Accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are forecast for the
Interstate 96 corridor, but amounts will be much less farther
north. More snow is expected of the weekend, particularly south
and east of Grand Rapids.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday)

Confidence is high enough to upgrade the Watch to a Warning along
the I-94 corridor as guidance has consistently shown this area
being impacted by the band of heaviest snow. Will have an
advisory north of the warning area, up to Interstate 96.

Still some major concerns however as the where the band of heavy
snow actually sets up and persists, but overwhelming consensus
continues to be near and just south of the I-94 corridor. Still no
slam dunk here since this is not a mature cyclone but instead a
strong FGEN event within the right entrance region of a 140 kt
upper level jet. These types of events, and where the best band or
bands set up, can be extremely difficult the nail down.

Snow ratios are problematic too, with anywhere from 12:1 to 20:1
possibilities depending on where best FGEN lift develops. Have
compromised by using a 14 to 15:1 through the bulk of the event.
QPF fcsts have been consistently near 0.75 along I-94, so even
very conservative 10:1 ratios still create a significant amount of
snow that could snarl traffic.

Another big concern is that a sharp northern edge of the
accumulating snow will set up near I-96, making placement of the
northern extent of the advisory highly challenging. There's still
even a low probability that the I-94 FGEN band will be farther
north.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

Forecast concerns in the long term deal with potential snow Saturday
night and Sunday. Pretty significant model differences exist between
the ecmwf and gfs. Both agree that low pressure will move northeast
from the Gulf. However, the ecmwf has a deeper upper trough that
draws the sfc low farther north than the weaker...by roughly 5mb...
gfs and that makes a huge difference in potential snowfall. The
ecmwf shows another 3-6 inch snowfall along I-94 whereas the gfs
just gives the far southeast cwa a glancing shot a light snow. In a
nod toward the ecmwf, we boosted pops a bit and may have to
significantly increase qpf if the ecmwf looks like it may verify.

Sunday night through Wednesday look dry, then both the ecmwf and gfs
show low pressure moving across either southern Canada. In this
case, the gfs is farther south and would give us light snow, but not
until Wednesday night.

We will see some warmer air next week with highs in the 30s Mon-
Wed.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night)

Lake effect snow showers will mainly stay west of US-131. However
some stratocu will begin to migrate east overnight as winds take
on a bit more westerly component. Look for MVFR cigs to develop
overnight. Snow will develop Thursday evening as a storm moves
toward Michigan. Snow will accumulate several inches Thursday
night through Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Issued at 330 PM EST Wed Feb 7 2018

Current ice jams and potential for new ice jams to form will be the
main hydrologic concern through the weekend. Cold temperatures will
be favorable for new ice formation on area rivers, and will not
favor the breakup of current ice jams. The next round of widespread
snow is expected Thursday night and Friday, with moderate to even
heavy amounts possible along and south of I-96. Water from this snow
will remain locked in the snowpack and not contribute to runoff.
Warmer temperatures are expected next week, with highs possibly
rising above freezing Tuesday and Wednesday. A wintry mix of
precipitation will also be possible Tuesday into Tuesday night. A
small amount of snowmelt and liquid precipitation may create some
runoff into area rivers. The combination of runoff and warmer
temperatures could allow river ice to begin shifting.

Flood Advisories will remain in effect for the Grand River near
Portland and the Looking Glass River near Eagle until water levels
fall below bankfull and stabilize. Minor flooding of low-lying areas
has been reported in each location due to ice jams. Water levels in
areas near ice jams will continue to fluctuate by as much as three
feet until ice breaks free. Please see the latest Flood Advisory

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of southwest Lower
Michigan.

.DAY ONE...Tonight

Snow showers will continue west US-131 through the night. Local
accumulations of an inch or two is possible.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Several inches of new snow is expected area-wide Thursday evening
through Friday evening. The heaviest snow is expected south of I-96,
but areas between I-96 and Highway 10 will also see significant
snow. Additional accumulations are possible with another system
Saturday into Sunday.

Ice has redeveloped in many rivers. The possibility exists for
ice jams into the end of the week which could result in some
localized flooding.
