.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 326 AM EST Wed Jan 3 2018

Expect snow today as cold front trailing a surface low currently
over eastern Lake Superior comes through the area this morning.
The snow assoicated with this system will come to an end over all
but areas near the Lake Michigan shore by this evening. Expect an
inch or two near and east of US-131 today with 2 to 4 inches from
US-131 to the lake shore.

Tonight our clipper low merges with a very powerful Nor-Easter and
that will result in two days of north winds and arctic air. This
will mean persistent lake effect snow bands near US-31 with the
Big and Little Sable points and extreme western Van Buren and
Allegan Counties getting the heaviest snowfall. Those areas could
see 2 feet of snow by Friday.

Beyond that a southern stream system tries to move into the area
late in the weekend or by early next week. That will bring an end
to this unusually cold weather but may mean a snow storm. That
will have to be watched.

The forecast remains largely unchanged this morning, with only
some freshening up of snow chances and amounts based on the latest
radar trends. The Winter Weather Advisory remains unchanged for
now. We are considering an upgrade to Allegan and Van Buren
counties with the afternoon package depending on how heavy the
snow bands are expected to get and amounts that will be expected.

The enhanced snow showers that dropped south along the lakeshore
has pretty much come to an end this morning, leaving light snow
inland, and lake effect taking shape over the lakeshore as
expected. The low level wind flow is transitioning from SW to NW
across the area with the passage of the sfc front and upper short
wave. We continue to expect the snow showers to migrate more
toward the lakeshore into this evening as the flow becomes more
NNW by then.

UPDATE Issued at 755 AM EST Wed Jan 3 2018

I have slightly increased snowfall amounts over Kent, Ottawa,
Allegan, Muskegon and Newaygo counties based on both observations
of 3 to 4 1/2 inches over parts of west central Kent County. Our
88D snow accumulation total shows a large area of 3 to 4 inches
already just northwest of the airport with some local amounts in
the 4 to 5" range. Since we have a localized surface FGEN event
(temps in the 15 to 20F range northwest of GRR and 5 to 10F at GRR
and to the south) helping the cause of locally heavier snowfall
in this area it seemed good to increase snowfall amounts. Likely I
should have increased them more than I did. We area getting water
to snow ratio's of 40 to 1 so this is a very fluffy snow.

After the cold front comes through and winds turn to the west
southwest, the FGEN area will be out of this area and snowfall
rates should decrease (within 2 hours).

UPDATE Issued at 624 AM EST Wed Jan 3 2018

I expunged the Wind Chill Advisory as current wind chills near
and south of I-96 are in the 5 to 10 below range and with the
frontal trough moving in, I expect winds to decrease some and air
temperatures to rise. That would lead to wind chills more in the 5
below to 5 above range by mid morning. That is still very cold
but not cold enough for an advisory.

The snow has become widespread across the area and in fact
showing stronger echos then any of the models suggested should be
there. Also due to the cloud layer winds being between 25 and 35
knots from the southwest, the heaviest snowfall so far is just
west of US-131 instead of by the lake shore as forecast by just
about all of the models. So, I increased the QPF inland closer to
US-131 over Kent and Ottawa Counties to account for this. It still
looks like the heaviest snowfall rates will be between 9 am and 2
pm over western sections (frontal band snow). The true lake
effect kicks on this evening.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)
Issued at 326 AM EST Wed Jan 3 2018

I extended our Winter Weather Advisory until 7 AM Friday morning
and it may have to be extended until Saturday morning as the snow
bands will persist over the same area from tonight through at
least early Saturday. That is thanks to our powerful Nor-Easter
that creates a rather deep upper level low that continues the
feed of north winds and arctic air into the area with cyclonicly
curved low level winds into this area until mid morning Saturday.

The frontal band has deep moisture and a deep DGZ (nearly 10000 ft
from 5 am till 10 am this morning). Snow bands have already
developed in the southwest flow ahead of the frontal precipitation
band. These will be enhanced with the deep moisture. Most areas
east of US-131 should see around an inch to possibly 2 two inches.
However with the assist of Lake Michigan (39 degrees from the
GLERL analysis) ares west of US-131 could see 2 to 4 inches
today. This is based on the mean QPF from several high resolution
models.

Once the frontal lift area is through here this afternoon, we get
trough that hangs back from the surface low into the Great Lakes
that stays in place through Friday. The mean wind in the lake
cloud deck will be around 330 degrees with little variation
through Friday. That will hold the lake snow bands in close to the
same location for long periods of time. There is persistent lift
in the DGZ (2000 ft to 4000 ft AGL) through Friday and the lake
induced cape is around 600 j/kg with the EQL near 10,000 ft. The
inversion height remains around 7000 to 8000 ft through this
period. I see no reason to believe we will not have at least 6
inches in the most favored areas every 12 hours through Fri. I
could see local areas getting over 2 feet. Since this is lake
enhanced snow, it will be fluffy, so we would likely not see 2
feet on the ground at any one time, since the snow will compress
as it falls (typically around 3" per day). There will not be
extreme winds with this so I am thinking an advisory will do. If
conditions become more extreme we may need to upgrade to a
warning. Based on all of this I extended the Winter Weather
Advisory till 7 AM Friday.

Inland it will mostly just be cold with partly cloudy to mostly
clear skies into Friday. There could be some light snow showers
from time to time due to day time heating instability inland.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 326 AM EST Wed Jan 3 2018

nw flow lake effect snow showers will continue Friday night across
portions of our lakeshore counties with h8 temps still down around
-16 to -18 C with airmass preconditioning from Lake Superior. Light
additional accumulations are possible mainly right near the Lake MI
shoreline. The snow showers will gradually taper off late Friday
night into Saturday morning as the high pressure ridge builds in.

It will be very cold again Friday night with min temps down to at
least 5 to 10 below zero inland from Lake Michigan. Just how cold it
will be is mainly contingent on how extensive and how quickly skies
clear overnight. The clearing skies calm winds and expansive snow
cover will set up ideal radiational cooling conditions as the high
builds in.

Tranquil wx is anticipated Saturday before light warm air advection
snow develops Saturday night as flow becomes south to southwesterly
on the back side of the departing ridge.  Light snow will continue
on Sunday and it is noted that medium range guidance trends the past
24 hours overall are a little milder. High temps Sunday should reach
the upper 20s to lower 30s given the strong south to sw flow waa
pattern.

For now we will keep the pcpn type fcst as snow Sunday through
Monday which is consistent with our previous fcst. However if medium
range guidance continues to trend a bit milder for Sunday into
Monday, there is concern that snow may become mixed with or change
over to a period of sleet or even light freezing rain before colder
air wraps back in on the back side of the departing system.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Thursday afternoon)

Widespread IFR today due to snow showers will improve to VFR
this evening as the snow showers end and winds shift to the
northwest. The exception will be at MKG where snow showers will
linger this evening, however even there the latest guidance
indicates that the lake effect snow bands will shift offshore
late tonight as winds become more northerly. This would result in
MKG also becoming VFR at some point after 06z tonight.

Winds have decreased below gale force (as seen in our coastal
observation sites) and gust speeds have fallen below 30 knots as
of 2 am. Even so I do expect 20 to 30 knot winds from the north
into Friday morning. So I replaced the gale with a small craft
advisory. There will be some freezing spray but it should not be
extreme enough to issue a headline.

.HYDROLOGY...
Issued at 1216 PM EST Tue Jan 2 2018

The Muskegon River at Evart has risen above bankfull, prompting
this morning's advisory. Sustained cold with temperatures well
below freezing have resulted in additional ice build-up, causing
fluctuations. While additional fluctuations will be possible, a
reinforcing push of cold air will generally keep temperatures
below 20 degrees. This should allow the river to stabilize over
the next couple of days. Forecast include minor impacts should
fluctuations remain small.

Most other sites around Southwest Lower Michigan are stable and
ice covered. The White River at Whitehall is ice affected with
some inaccurate data. No impacts have been reported and overall
trends are not concerning. Expected little impact elsewhere with
precipitation being all snow. Temperatures may approach the
freezing mark early next week, which may raise concerns in
locations with thinner/weaker ice cover.

Widespread snow today with some blowing and drifting snow. Snowfalls
will be 2 to 4 inches west of US-131 and 1 to 2 inches near and east
of US-131. Untreated roads will be icy and snow covered.

Tonight the snow showers will intensity near the Lake Michigan
shore while ending inland. The snow showers near the lake shore
will be heavy at times and that will result in sudden sharp
reductions in visibility. Some blowing and drifting of the snow is
also expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Snow showers will persist into Saturday morning west of US-131
and be heavy at times near the Lake Michigan shore (near and west
of US-31). Travel in these area may become very difficult due to
some blowing and drifting and very heavy snowfall rates.

Another storm system could bring significant snow to the area
late in the weekend or early next week.
