Snow showers will continue into Saturday morning near the Lake
Michigan shore, with areas of extreme western Allegan and Van
Buren Counties seeing the heaviest snowfall amounts. The snow
bands will more around some so it will not be snowing at any one
place all the time. By mid morning Saturday local snowfall amounts
should be well over a foot from this event. Travel down I-196
south of Holland and also on US-31 along its entire length will
be challenging at best the next few days.
Meanwhile area near and east of US-131 will see just cold
temperatures with wind chill values near -15 degrees this morning
and closer to -20 degrees tomorrow morning. Little of any snow is
expected east of US-131 into Saturday.
It also seems we will see some snow Sunday and a significant warm
up Sunday into Monday before another arctic cold front brings more
cold air back to the area.

I have extended our Winter Weather Headlines to 7 am Saturday
morning as the north wind dominant band snow event will continue
unabated through that time frame. After 7 am Saturday the snow
bands move on shore and dissipate.
I did not change our wind chill advisory but more than likely we
will need one again for tonight into Friday morning and maybe
Friday night into Saturday morning all for areas just east of
US-131. I could see the colder locations over our northeast CWA
getting colder that 20 below both nights. Since winds will be a
little lighter Friday night, that will likely be the colder night.
As for our headlines, little has changed from the past few days. A
persistent north northwest wind (340 degrees) in the cloud baring
layer (2000 ft to 8000 feet) will for the most part remain
unchanged through Saturday morning. We have strong lift in the DGZ
into Saturday morning as seen in BUFKIT, through Saturday morning
and with inversion heights near 7000 ft, that is more than enough
to keep the lake snow band active through then. I would think we
could see between 18 inches and 24 inches for storm totals in the
areas with the heaviest snowfall. Outside of that expect more like
6 to 12 inches over the next 60 hours or so.
Bottom line is winter weather will continue through the short term
forecast period.
.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Wednesday)

Light snow will develop Saturday night and then continue through
Sunday due to isentropic upglide in a strengthening warm air
advection pattern on the back side of the departing high pressure
ridge. Light snow accumulations on the order of two to four inches
are anticipated Saturday night through Sunday. High temperatures
Sunday will reach the upper 20's to lower 30's.
Light snow will continue Sunday night into early Monday before
gradually tapering off Monday as a colder and drier airmass advects
in behind that departing system. A weak high pressure ridge will
then gradually build in Monday night through Tuesday and bring
fairly tranquil weather with seasonably cold temps.
A few light lake effect snow showers are possible Tuesday with h8
temps down around -12 to -14 C by then. However subsidence under the
ridge should suppress the snow shower potential considerably if not
entirely.
It is noted that overall medium range guidance trends the past 24 to
36 hours are now much milder for the middle portion of next week and
suggest that the arctic air will stay north of our fcst area. I have
trended the high temperatures up by several degrees and future
shifts will probably need to continue to trend temps warmer for
Wed/Thur given latest guidance trends. However medium range guidance
has shown very poor run to run consistency lately with regard to the
evolution of the wx pattern for mid to late next week. Therefore for
now we only nudged fcst temps up slightly.

VFR conditions are anticipated at most of the terminals through
Thursday evening. The exception to this is at KMKG where MVFR
conditions will be the most prevalent due to lake effect low
clouds and lake effect snow showers that will continue through
Thursday evening.
Some brief reductions to IFR in snow are possible at KMKG mainly
Thursday afternoon and evening as the snow showers drift a little
further inland. However prevailing conditions at KMKG most of the
time tomorrow should be MVFR.

it seemed prudent to extend our SCA headlines till 10 am Saturday
morning, so I did just that. That was with coordination with the
Chicago and Northern Indiana office forecasters. I also put
freezing spray in our forecast as it is more than cold enough and
there is also enough wind.

The advisory continues for the Muskegon River at Evart. Subtle
fluctuations are possible, but overall trends will be for the river
to continue to stabilize.
Sustained cold with high temperatures below 20 degrees and river
water temperatures near freezing will support further ice
development. Most areas, if not already frozen, will likely start to
freeze over through the end of the week. High temperatures are
expected to recover to near freezing, which is near normal, but not
enough to lead to any rapid melting.
Rivers are expected to remain stable with the long duration of
near/below freezing temperatures. It is quite possible (barring any
unforeseen long term warm-up) that rivers remain iced over for the
foreseeable future.
