.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday night)

Across the Tri State region this afternoon...skies are mainly partly
sunny with temperatures ranging from the upper 30s into the mid and
upper 40s. Winds are light and northerly as the CWA sits just north
of a weak trough/surface low.
Going into tonight...the surface low makes a slow trudge eastward
clearing the CWA by Tuesday morning as a quick moving upper level
ridge builds over the region for Tuesday. Thru Tuesday as a
result...no weather is expected with msunny skies transitioning to
partly sunny conditions late in the day.
For Tuesday night on through Thursday night...this timeframe will
encompass the main weather concerns for the entire CWA. A strong
cutoff upper low digs into the desert SW region during the afternoon
hrs on Tuesday...lifting ENE into the central Plains early Wednesday
morning...exiting the region by Thursday afternoon into the northern
Plains/Mississippi Valley region.
Uncertainty has been in play with several models/model runs with how
this system...especially the sfc to 850 mb...will track across the
region. The GFS/NAM have been now carrying this system too far south
of the CWA to allow for any decent moisture to wrap into the area.
Latest runs of the ECMWF/Canadian appear to have a better handle
although timing may be a bit slower.
The timing and track of this system thru the area will have high
impacts on p-type and of course amounts of both snow and freezing
rain(ice). Have opted to stay closer to a ECMWF/Canadian track in
combination with latest WPC guidance which has had a better handle
and brings the system over western portions of Kansas.
With the expected NE track of the low...temperatures from about
Highway 25 east will remain above freezing and thus expecting rain
to be the main P-type initially. Areas west of Highway 25 will be
cold enough to see a wintry mix when precipitation starts after 06z
Wednesday...but go to mostly rain as ample WAA converts over P-type.
By late Wednesday night...surface/850 lows will shift almost east of
the region...allowing for more colder air to push south into the
region. The result will be a transition from any remaining rain to a
wintry mix...especially central and western locales...then all snow
for all areas going into Thursday. Precipitation tapers from SW to
NE before ending.
Other concern going into Thursday and Thursday night...as the system
exits the region...the wrap-around wind gradient will bring 30-40
mph gust potential...and thus blowing snow conditions. The slow
transition to a colder airmass and thus drier snow...should keep
blowing snow concerns down..but patchy blowing snow is expected. Any
change in low track will alter amounts of p-type and increase
blowing snow concerns to a more widespread status and even bring
about ground blizzard conditions. Stay tuned.
Total expected QPF for the event will range from about 0.40 inches
to almost an inch over E/NE zones. Expected snowfall at this time
will range from 2-6 inches with highest totals will occur along and
north of Highway 36. Because of the slow transition to colder
temps...not expecting big pockets of freezing rain...but areal
coverage more uniform from a few hundredths up to around a tenth of
an inch.
For temps...40s for highs Tuesday will transition down to around 40F
by Wednesday and could be an early high event. By Thursday...upper
20s to around 30F. Overnight lows...mainly 20s...transitioning to
teens by Thursday night.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Monday)

Long range models show a positively-tilted trough feature extending
into the southwestern U.S. Friday. The GFS shows a cutoff low
initially while the Canadian and ECMWF show an open wave but the GFS
shows the cutoff low opening up as the wave passes over the Rockies.
Model guidance shows similar upper air patterns though the ECMWF is
much more progressive than the GFS. The ECMWF shows the trough
moving east and weakening as a ridge being pushed by another trough
moves into the central U.S. by Sunday. The trough devolves into a
shortwave by Sunday night within the ridge flow. A second trough
moves into the central Plains Sunday, digging into the southwestern
U.S. A cutoff low begins to form over the southwest by Monday night.
The GFS shows a similar pattern but later in time than the ECMWF.
The second trough does not enter the central Plains until Monday
night. The GFS also does not form a cutoff low over the southwest
U.S. with the second trough.
High temperatures ranging from the 20s at the beginning of the
extended period to the low 40s by the end of next weekend are
expected. The main concern will be wind chills Friday and Saturday
night as lows will be in the teens to single digits with winds at 10-
15mph. This could lead to wind chills as low as the negative single
digits. There are some slight chances for snow Friday night into
Saturday primarily east of the Kansas/Colorado state line. Rain
and snow chances also exist Monday afternoon along the state lines.

Hazardous weather is not expected at this time. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH MONDAY... A Winter Storm Watch has been issued and will be in effect from late Tuesday night through Thursday evening as a strong upper level system moves across the region during this time period. Freezing rain is expected to begin after midnight Tuesday night transitioning to rain Wednesday morning. The rain transitions back to freezing rain then all snow Wednesday night continuing through Thursday evening. Blowing snow is expected Wednesday night through Thursday with wind gusts up to 40 MPH.
