.SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday night)

Main Forecast issues will be fire weather, wind, and how warm does
it get. Satellite showing an amplified flow from the Pacific into
North America. Strong and cold upper system digging/moving little
along the Pacific northwest coast. In fact it looks like it has
moved a little west from yesterday.
At jet level the models started out fine. At mid levels the models
were fine however they did have a tendency to the height field a
little too far south and east. The Ecmwf and Canadian looked to be
slightly better. Models started out fine on the low level thermal
field with the Sref and Canadian doing slightly better.
Refer to the fire weather section below for specifics on the fire
weather issues through the beginning of next week.
Today/tonight...Clouds clear out quickly leaving little to no cloud
cover. Winds have stayed up over much of the area which has those
areas very mild for this time of year. Of concern today is that the
models have pushed pushed the lee trough a little further east today
than yesterday. The tightest gradient and stronger winds look to be
to the south and east of my area.
Considering the current temperatures and the changes in the low
level thermal field, I did raise the maxes a little across the
southwest half of the area.
Saturday/Saturday night...Surface trough is further east still with
the strongest pushed even further south and east of the area than
for today. The winds are much lighter than todays with the stronger
winds along the southern end of our area. Warmer air mass and better
downslope component will add about 3 to 8 degrees to the high
temperatures which will be near to above daily records, refer to the
climate section below.
Low level moisture advection will increase dramatically during the
night as a result of the incoming strong storm system. At the very
least it should become cloudy during the later half of the night. It
will be possible that some fog will develop added some patchy fog
for after midnight.
Sunday/Sunday night...Patchy fog should clear out by late morning.
Complex and active weather period will begin late in the morning and
continue through the end of this period. There is still some
differences on the timing of the incoming cold front. The Nam is
still the fastest. However, it does not start bringing in the cold
front until during the mid and late afternoon hours which is a
little after max heating time.
Considering the pattern, and a continuing slowing trend of the
strong upper system, slower appears to better with the front. There
will be plenty of sun and downslope warming ahead of the incoming
front. So felt confident in raising maxes, especially in the
southeast half of the area. Many locations look to climb into the
70s but these temperatures will be well below daily records.
Very mid level lift as front comes in later in the afternoon and
mainly during the night. Left front quadrant of incoming upper jet
begins affecting the southern half of the area from late in the
afternoon through at least the middle of the night. Main low level
moisture appears to be pushed to the east of the area with good
theta-e lapse rates in place. At this time looks like thunderstorms
will form just to the east of the area so left them out at this time.
There looks to be a little precipitation over the northern portion
of the area. However it looks to be light since the main upper low
is to the north of our area.
The main story will be very strong and gusty post frontal winds.
Very tight gradient and 3 hour pressure rises of at least 10 mb will
create windy conditions. After collaboration raised the winds from
what the builder gave me. However, there is potential that these
winds could be higher.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Thursday)

Monday and Tuesday: Retreating H5 low combined with pressure rises
will create a sharp pressure gradient on Monday. A katabatic element
enhances this forcing, which will increase the winds further as the
day progresses. We will be looking at sustained northwest winds of
30 to 35 mph with gusts to near 45 mph Monday afternoon given the
current guidance. May need to consider high wind highlights on
Monday should this trend continue. Going into Monday evening, we
should see a decrease in winds; however, continued northwest winds
are expected to continue, and with the strong pressure gradient
still influencing the region, we will see breezy conditions
overnight. For Tuesday, the pressure gradient weakens as the H5 low
continues eastward into the Great Lakes region. Still looking at
breezy conditions with continued northwest flow and katabatic
influence, giving us 20 to 30 mph winds with gusts approaching 35
mph. High temperatures on Monday and Tuesday will reach the middle
to upper 40s with lows in the upper teens to middle 20s.
Wednesday and Thursday: Near average temperatures and dry weather
prevail on Wednesday with a reprieve from the gusty winds of Monday
and Tuesday. Look for highs in the upper 40s as nearly zonal flow
begins to take shape to the west. Lows fall into the 20s Wednesday
night. Dry and mild weather are expected on Thursday with zonal flow
and afternoon high temperatures in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees.

20kts expected from taf issuance through about 23z then falling
into the 10-12kt range from 00z through the rest of the period
under a clear sky.

15-20kts expected from taf issuance through about 22z then falling
to 11kts or so from the southeast through 07z. After 08z winds
generally variable 5kts or so under a clear sky. May have some
wind shear this evening through very early Saturday morning.

.FIRE WEATHER...

For today...As stated above, am a little concerned that the
strongest winds will materialize to the south and east of my area.
However, those winds should still be able to meet critical fire
weather criteria. The problem is the same as yesterday. How far
east will dry air get. The better mixing and drier air looks to
have pushed slightly further east from yesterday. As a result, I
upgraded Thomas, Logan, and Gove counties from a watch to a
warning and cancelled the watch for Norton, Sheridan, and Graham
counties.
For Saturday...Relative humidities will be lower this day, over the
southwest half, especially along and west of the Colorado border,
than they will be for today. Problem for this day will be the winds.
As stated above, surface trough is closer to and/or over the
forecast area which pushes the tightest pressure gradient and
stronger winds further south and east than today.
Current forecast supports the latest outlook from SPC in having the
far southern portion of the area in a critical area. However, due to
the current highlight and more uncertainty than yesterday, chose not
to issue a watch. Day shift will look at this again.
For Sunday...Frontal timing will be the key to where critical fire
weather conditions will be met. Timing of front has slowed down
allowing for much warmer temperatures over the southern half of the
area. Strong mixing of the downslope winds will bring the best
combination of the strongest winds and much drier air than what was
seen in the previous two days. Feel the most confident this day
about the most widespread critical fire weather conditions.
For Monday...This day will by far have the strongest winds of any of
the previous three days. The question will be where the lowest
relative humidities will be. However no matter how low the relative
humidities will be, this could be the most dangerous day considering
the expected wind speeds.
