Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Goodland KS 1035 AM MDT Sun Apr 15 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday) Issued at 300 AM MDT Sun Apr 15 2018 Upper ridge will migrate from the Four Corners region today to the central plains on Monday and amplify. Temperatures today will remain below normal, coolest north of the Interstate where highs will be in the 40s, but might see a few 60s in far southern areas. Surface ridge axis will move into eastern areas tonight, and with the light winds/radiational cooling might see some patchy freezing fog develop by Monday morning. Temperatures will begin to respond to the building upper ridge on Monday. Highs will range from the upper 50s near McCook to the middle 70s in Kit Carson, Colorado. Expecting elevated fire weather in the warmer areas of the southwest as humidity drops to near 15 percent, but appears will fall short of critical fire weather criteria on Monday. Tuesday appears that it will be an active day. A sharp upper trough moves across the area during the afternoon. Models indicate strong westerly winds developing on the backside of the system Tuesday afternoon and evening. High Wind criteria may be met in Colorado and areas west of Highway 25. Blowing dust may develop in those areas. It will also be a critical fire weather day, with possible extreme conditions due to the high winds and humidity dropping below 10 percent. It is still a couple of days out, but will begin to ramp up wording in HWO. May see a few light rain/snow showers Tuesday night in southwest Nebraska with the upper trough, but does not appear to be any significant precipitation with this system. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Saturday) Issued at 244 AM MDT Sun Apr 15 2018 An active pattern prevails Wednesday through Saturday. Near seasonal high temperatures are expected for Wednesday and Thursday with cooler than average temperatures for Friday and Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday: Northwest flow aloft prevails on Wednesday with dry weather in advance of an approaching H5 trough. Breezy conditions are expected for at least the first half of the day as low pressure situated in the upper Midwest continues to influence the area. The next low pressure system approaches the region on Thursday; however, much of the day will remain dry with increasing rain chances through the late afternoon and evening from west to east. Friday and Saturday: H5 low pressure moves out of southeastern Colorado and into southwest Kansas Friday morning. Rain chances increase significantly through the morning and into the afternoon with moderate to heavy rain possible at times through the day on Friday. A few thunderstorms are possible in the southern portions of the CWA. Colder air advects in on the northwestern side of the low as it moves further eastward. A change over to snow is expected Friday night from west to east before changing back over to rain by mid-morning on Saturday. At this time, consensus is to keep PoPs in the forecast through at least Saturday night and into Sunday morning. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1030 AM MDT Sun Apr 15 2018 KGLD, vfr conditions through the period. Northwest winds will gust around 20kts through 22z before slowly decreasing while also veering to the northeast by 00z. Winds continue to veer to the east around 03z, southeast around 6kts by 06z then south by 15z. From 15z through the rest of the taf period south winds increase with gusts in the 25kt range expected. KMCK, vfr conditions through the period. Winds begin from the northwest gusting around 20kts but decrease by 22z. For this evening and tonight light and variable winds expected, could see some fog/mist in the 10z-14z timeframe which could produce ifr conditions.
