Winter Storm Warnings were issued for portions of southwest
Colorado and southeast Utah beginning tonight and Winter Weather
Advisories were continued and expanded, with some adjustments in
timing.
A storm will strengthen as it moves quickly through northern UT
and northwest CO this evening then move more slowly through
southeast UT and southern CO late tonight through Monday. This
evening a period of good uplift, moisture and orographic flow will
help produce snowfall over much of northeast UT and northern CO
north of the Bookcliffs. A few inches of snow should accumulate
over Vail and Rabbit Ears passes as well as all the higher
elevations of northern CO and UT but as the front moves south of
Interstate 70 around midnight the flow shifts to northeasterly and
the moisture moves south as well so significant snowfall should
end late tonight and fall short of advisory level accumulations.
As the front continues to move south all the models show
frontogenesis and cyclogenesis over west-central CO and east-
central UT which slows the system's movement to the south and
enhances uplift. Combined with the ample moisture and cold
advection, believe 6 to 12 inches of accumulations are possible
from about sunrise Monday through Tuesday morning over the
Uncompahgre Plateau, Grand and Battlement Mesas, the West Elk and
Sawatch mountains, as well as the northwest San Juan Mountains.
Valley zones will also see enough snowfall to justify and advisory
in the Paradox Valley, the Uncompahgre and Gunnison River
Valleys. A foot or more of snow is expected over the La Sal and
Abajo Mountains in southeast UT.
Beginning an hour or two after sunrise Monday the cold front from
this system should be moving through the San Juan mountains and
into southwest CO and extreme SE UT. The upper circulation will
deepen over northern AZ and turn the winds more southerly through
the day. This will focus snowfall over the lower elevations of
the Four Corners from La Plata county east, as well as the
southwest San Juan mountains. Model solutions vary quite a bit in
total snowfall Monday through Tuesday, with the range from 8
inches to 20 inches in the Durango and Pagosa Springs vicinities,
and 3 to 6 inches in the Cortez area, with highest amounts in the
foothills near these cities. Snowfall in the southwest San Juans
could range from 10 to 20 inches.

Significant winter weather should continue through Tuesday over
the San Juan mountains and Durango and Pagosa Springs areas as the
storm moves south and east. Snowfall should decrease rapidly over
eastern Utah and northwest and central Colorado. The upper low
will move through central New Mexico Wednesday at high pressure
builds over the western U.S. This ridge will bring dry conditions
and nearly clear skies so expect cold temperatures day and night
through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday the ridge will be east of
the area and another Pacific storm will be approaching the
California coast. Southwest winds aloft will increase along with
mid and high clouds. The storm is expected to move into the Great
Basin Sunday and tap southern moisture ahead of it. This might
bring an episode of warmer precipitation.
