Little change to the ongoing forecast with critical fire weather
conditions still anticipated today and again on Friday as a deep
upper level low slides into the Great Basin over the next few
days. Persistent, and generally dry, southwest to west flow will
be sticking around through the short term period with temperatures
running a solid 10 to 15 degrees above normal in most areas.
Record high today in Grand Junction stands at 89 and with enough
sun, we could make a run for that number with the new forecast
high sitting at 88. We shall see if we can get a little closer to
that 90 degree mark. Of course, those 90s have already hit
Southeast Utah with 93 at Bluff and 92 in Moab yesterday.
The forecast is a but frustrating as we will be in the perennial
dry slot for the next several days, wasting a perfectly good upper
level low that the models insist will be too far to our west to
wrap better moisture into the area. The exception will be over the
Eastern Uinta Mountains in Northeast Utah where better moisture
will work in. This mountain chain is oriented from west to east
and with deep southerly difluent flow setting up overhead, we
should see at least scattered showers/storms over the next few
days. Slightly cooler conditions also work in late in the week,
so some snow is expected above the 9k mark for this particular
chain.
Overall, expect more of the same with temperatures remaining well
above normal, mild overnight mins, increasing southwest winds and
critical to near critical fire weather conditions persisting for
at least two more days.
.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday)

Unfortunately it looks like we are going to get a raw deal through
at least the first half of the weekend as we will be trading
precipitation for wind. Not good on many levels but especially
fire weather related. Luckily thunderstorms do not look very
probable until early next week and this is mainly across northern
portions of Colorado and Utah. Models still drop a closed low into
the Great Basin by early Saturday and cut it off by the
afternoon. This system will basically spin away while weakening in
this general location as a Rex pattern sets up in the West. It is
not until the next upstream system arrives to the WEST Coast by
the middle of next week before this low is finally given a good
kick eastward. The GFS wants to paint some precipitation over the
region Sunday night through Monday as the jet is lifting back
north with a weak surface boundary near the northern Divide
providing some additional focus. The system is becoming less
baroclinic by this time so it would appear instability is mainly
orographically driven and showers mainly scattered and tied to the
terrain. Temperatures will slowly cool back as this low moves
into the region but still appear to remain above normal most
areas. The above mentioned front looks to waver across NE.Utah and
NW.Colorado at times and is likely to influence highs. However
confidence in this is very low attm and will have to play this day
by day as it arrives.
