.SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday)
Issued at 440 AM MDT Tue Apr 10 2018

Except for patchy thin cirrus moving through the ridge over the
Great Basin, skies were clear across eastern Utah and western
Colorado early this morning. Cirrus will continue to move overhead
during the day as the ridge axis shifts east, aligning with the
western Colorado border by 6 PM this evening. Lift and moisture
lacking in this pattern so kept precipitation out of the forecast
today. Meanwhile, warm air advection will drive 7H temperatures
upward by around 6 degrees C resulting in afternoon highs from 5
to 10 degrees above normal.

The ridge aloft flattens and is forced east of the area tonight
as a fast moving, low-amplitude shortwave trough sweeps across the
Great Basin. This disturbance brings a slight chance of showers
to the higher elevations of the eastern Uinta Mountains late
tonight, along with increased clouds across the north. Chances for
showers will spread to the Elkhead, Park, and Flat Top Mountains
on Wednesday. Shower activity will be pretty light, with snow
levels expected to rise from 8500 feet in the morning to near 9500
feet during the afternoon. Accumulations are expected to be less
than an inch above 9500 feet. Meanwhile, areas to the south will
remain dry with skies ranging from cloudy or mostly cloudy in the
north to mostly clear across the south. Winds will become breezy
during the afternoon with the passing trough tightening the
gradient aloft and encouraging deeper mixing.

Warm air advection will keep overnight lows mild while driving
afternoon highs on Wednesday to their highest levels so far this
year. Southeast Utah can expect highs in the lower to mid 80s,
with 70s across the remaining valleys, and 50s and 60s in the
mountains. These values are around 15 degrees warmer than normal
and may approach records for some locations.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday)

All eyes shift westward in the long term period as a deep trough
and surface cold front approach from the Pacific Northwest. So
far, models remain in fairly good agreement with the evolution of
this system though subtle timing differences do exist.

Wednesday night through noon Thursday, the pressure gradient will
continue to tighten as indicated by H7 winds reaching 50 kts over
some areas. Usually, these winds do not reach the surface during
the night as the atmosphere decouples, but enough deep mixing may
continue during the overnight hours for some gusty winds (20 to
30 mph or so) to continue. Time will tell.

The front will move through the forecast area during the
afternoon hours Thursday, and with decent lapse rates in place
and also some CAPE, thunderstorms can't be ruled out ahead of and
along the front. By Thursday evening, the front will have pushed
through with the usual mountain sites favored for precipitation.
As the trough moves through, models indicated a closed low
forming over Wyoming and slowly drifting southeast to the front
range. This drift will allow wrap-around moisture to continue to
bring showers to the mountains with lift primarily supplied by
orographic lift. In fact, precipitation may continue through
Friday evening and this solution is shown in both the Euro and
GFS. Some accumulating snow certainly looks possible Thursday
night onwards as colder air filters down from the north. A bit too
early to tell how much just yet. Speaking of temperatures, highs
Friday will be anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees cooler than those
felt the day before.

High pressure builds in Saturday afternoon and persists through
Monday with a quick rebound to more normal temperatures
anticipated.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Strengthening southwest winds from Wednesday afternoon into
Thursday raises fire weather concerns for areas where fuels are
critical. It is suspected that recent rains have significantly
reduced fire danger, thought some critical fuels may remain. Fire
managers are encouraged to update their fuel status. There is a
good chance that winds will reach advisory levels on Thursday.

A late winter storm is likely late Thursday into Friday which may
bring significant snowfall to the northern and central Colorado
mountains, along with areas of blowing snow. Latest data suggest
accumulations of 5 to 10 inches above 8500 feet with locally
higher amounts are possible.
