.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Wednesday night)
Issued at 331 PM MDT Tue Jul 17 2018

Forecast still on track in the near-term with scattered showers
and thunderstorms slowly moving west to east near the UT/CO
border NW of Grand Jct...and another batch of showers developing
in western Colorado across the higher terrain and drifting
eastward. These storms will likely kick off some outflow
boundaries and initiate new storms quickly through this afternoon
and early evening. Forecast models indicate slightly drier air
moving in from the west on Wednesday. Storms are still expected
over the higher terrain (especially in the San Juans), however,
the risk for moderate to heavy rain will lower substantially over
the next few days across most of western Colorado and NE Utah. Hi
res models showing barely any convection on Wednesday
afternoon...but lightning and gusty winds will still be a concern
by mid afternoon with convection focusing on the high peaks. Have
NOT issued another Flash Flood Watches because of the low risk of
flash flooding for Wednesday. The current Flash Flood Watch for
the 416 burn scar in effect now remains in effect until 9pm
tonight.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

High pressure will drift far enough east on Thursday to be centered
over the Four Corners. Forecast models have been struggling with
moisture fields in the mid week period as slightly drier air moves
in. Conditions are not looking as dry now across southeastern Utah
late week, but much of western Colorado except the southern most
valleys along the CO/NM border are not likely to see much if any
rain until Friday at the earliest. The center of high pressure will
continue to drift southeastward to the Southern Plains this weekend,
re-tapping subtropical moisture for a few days. There continues to
be indication of a downturn in activity early next week, but my
confidence is low that we will see any prolonged period of drier air
across the region as a whole. In the meantime, temperatures will
remain relative to cloud cover - more clouds the lower the temps.
Saturday and Sunday will likely be cooler days due to cloud cover
and numerous showers and thunderstorms across the region.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)
Issued at 1034 AM MDT Tue Jul 17 2018

VFR will be the prevailing conditions across the area today. Drier
air moving into areas north of I-70 will cause less thunderstorm
development, but moist air remains in place over the southern half
of the area. Expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms
over the southern mountains after 1400, with isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the mountains of northern area. There is 30 to
50 percent chance of storms impacting KGUC, KTEX and KDRO from
20Z through 01Z this evening. Should storms move over these
airfields brief MVFR visibility in heavy rain would be likely,
with outflow winds to 35 MPH possible. Outflow winds from nearby
storms are possible at all TAF sites as well.

This hazardous weather outlook is for eastern Utah and western
Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop over the higher
terrain from late morning into the afternoon and are expected to
linger well into the evening. Severe weather is not expected,
however some cells will be capable of generating excessive
rainfall which may lead to rock fall and debris flows in steep
terrain. Fresh burn scars, most notably from the 416, Burro and
Lake Christine fires are particularly susceptible to debris flows
and flash flooding.

A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the 416 and Burro burn
scars from noon to 9 PM MDT this evening.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Monday

Isolated to scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms will be
possible each day the rest of the week, mainly over the
mountains.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation is not expected today or tonight, however
spotters are encouraged to relay rainfall amounts or any observed
flooding to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction.

SOUTHEASTERN UINTAH COUNTIES UNTIL 330 PM MDT...

At 301 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 36
miles northwest of Fruita, or 46 miles northwest of Grand Junction,
moving southeast at 20 mph.

Nickel size hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with
this storm.

This storm will remain over mainly rural areas of southwestern
Garfield and southeastern Uintah Counties.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Heavy rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead to
localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded
roadways.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.

At 324 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from 30 miles south of Rangely to 33 miles west of
Fruita. Movement was east at 20 mph.

Half inch hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with
these storms.

Locations impacted include...
Mack and Loma.

This includes the following highways...
 Interstate 70 in Colorado between mile markers 1 and 17.
 Interstate 70 in Utah between mile markers 220 and 231.
 Colorado 139 between mile markers 1 and 43.
