Mesonet sites have measured .01 up to .05" at Hazard.
FWIW the 12Z NAM/GFS/GEM have stepped in the direction of the last
3 runs of the EC. NAM/GFS QPF's are heavier than the 06Z runs...
particularly E of Hwy 281. We will probably be adding to our WS
watch with the afternoon fcst pckg...but this depends on
collaboration with neighboring offices.
Internal coord call with neighboring Neb offices and WPC will
occur at 1815Z.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Precipitation Type Today:
The primary forecast concern today centers around a light band of
precipitation that will track from west to east across primarily
Nebraska zones. Much of what we are initially seeing early this
morning on radar is not reaching the ground due to a dry layer.
However, we do expect some sprinkles or even a few light rain
showers to eventually reach the surface later this morning and
afternoon. The surface temperatures have been warming overnight
across our western zones as the thicker clouds have moved in and
this trend will likely spread to eastern zones. Therefore, sfc
temperatures should be right around or above freezing by the time
any of the precipitation reaches the ground later this morning.
Consequently, have removed the mention of freezing rain from the
forecast as even if we briefly see rain at 32F, the temperature
will quickly rise and we are not expecting any impacts from
freezing rain this morning.
Today will be slightly cooler than yesterday with more cloud
cover.
Tonight...
A widespread low stratus cloud deck will overspread the area and
thicken. This will act as warming blanket and our forecast lows
tonight if anything may be too cold. We can't rule out drizzle
after midnight based on the 00Z and 06Z NAM mainly across our
southwestern 2/3rds of our forecast area. However, recent NAM
models are showing warmer sfc temperatures under the stratus deck
so if we do see drizzle I believe the sfc temperature will be
around or just above freezing. There is just really not much cold
air for this system to initially work with.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

A winter storm is appearing more likely for Friday night through
Sunday morning, especially for areas north of I-80. However, we
are seeing a trend of a southward shifting storm track that could
result in increased winter weather impacts for more of our
forecast area.
Friday...
The biggest forecast change was pulling out the mention of
freezing drizzle during the daytime hours on Friday. Older runs of
the NAM model had been showing some colder (below freezing) sfc
temperatures, Friday morning, but that might have been partly due
to poor snow cover initialization in the model. A majority of the
forecast models from the 00Z runs indicate above freezing
temperatures for areas where drizzle will be possible during the
times when drizzle may be occurring. Will likely need to increase
our Friday morning low temperatures up closer to 32. The best
chance for drizzle or very light rain will be Friday afternoon
with lesser chances in the morning.
Friday night through Sunday (Winter Storm System)...
Comparing 00Z forecast models: The 00Z 11/29 ECMWF continued to
be the strongest with this storm system, indicating the greatest
deepening, slowest storm motion, heaviest precipitation, and
furthest south storm track (more of our forecast area impacted).
Interestingly the 00Z 11/29 ECMWF was very similar to the 12Z
11/28 ECMWF. The 00Z 11/29 ECMWF ensemble mean snowfall totals
also shifted southward by at least two tiers of counties when
compared to the 12Z 11/28 ECMWF ensemble mean. Consequently the
ECMWF has increased our confidence in the potential for a
significant winter storm this weekend primarily across our
Nebraska zones with increasing confidence as you head north across
Nebraska. The ECMWF may be a little overdone (Too deep, too much
precipitation), but believe it has the right idea given the
pattern, which supports a deepening cut off low.
However, hurting confidence just a little bit would be the 00Z
GFS and 00Z NAM which were weaker with the upper system, more
progressive, further north, and would indicate less precipitation.
Have essentially thrown these models out during the weekend time
frame as the NAM's performance on storm track beyond 48 hrs is
pretty weak and the GFS upper and sfc features just do not feel
right. In addition, the GFS track record with the system just last
week was slow to catch up on the southward shift of that system.
The 00Z and 06Z GFSFV3 (experimental/parallel GFS) model run were
much closer to the 00Z ECMWF with a 500 mb closed low track across
Kansas and then eventually becoming a very vertically stacked low
somewhere around the far southeastern tip of Nebraska. This would
tend to be a pretty favorable storm track for especially our zones
north of I-80 and lends support to the 00Z ECMWF. In addition, the
06Z operational GFS has just rolled in and still looks a bit off,
but is trending further south and closer to the GFSFV3 and ECMWF.
The stronger/deeper the system is, the more snow and cold air we
will see wrapping around the back side of the upper low into our
forecast area.
Headlines...
Given some of the still fairly big model differences with the 00Z
11/29 model runs, we wanted to be a bit conservative on how far
south to extend the initial winter storm watch. So we started our
watch issuance with this forecast package for the Highway 92 area
northward where our confidence in heavy snow is greatest.
However, I believe that if the southward trend that we are seeing
now holds, then we will need to expand that watch further south
to I-80 and possible as far south as highway 6 across south
central Nebraska. We'll see. The winter storm watch begins at 6 pm
Friday evening, but honestly that may be a little early but didn't
want to get too fancy with it this far out. Most of any winter
weather trouble may not be until after midnight Friday night. It
was also hard to know when to end the watch as light snow could
linger right through much of Sunday.
Precipitation Type...
Should be predominately rain to begin with and then change over
to snow. However, there could be a narrow window of freezing rain
or sleet for a few hours Friday night during that change over
window given a warm tongue of air aloft. We ultimately get the
snow due to strong dynamic cooling as the system strengthens and
also the system moves slow enough that it is eventually able to
tap into cooler air from the north.
Monday through Wednesday...The big deal will be that some pretty
cold weather is expected to settle in behind this storm system
with several days below freezing and it could be well below
freezing. There is also the possibility of a little more light
snow on Monday.

The majority of snow and possible freezing rain will occur between late Friday night and Saturday night, although some light snow will likely linger into Sunday and possibly even Monday before ending altogether. Snow will also be accompanied by northerly winds gusting to at least 25 MPH at times. Although there remains plenty of uncertainty in snow amounts, preliminary indications suggest that totals could range from as high as 4 to 8 inches within some Nebraska counties mainly north of Interstate 80, to as little as 1 inch or less farther south into north central Kansas. Ice accumulation is not currently expected to be a major concern, but some places could see up to around one-tenth of an inch.
