.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

A longwave upper-level trough over the Intermountain West will
move east over the Plains today, becoming negatively-tilted in the
process. At the surface, a low pressure centered over Colorado
combined with the high pressure over the Great Lakes will create a
strong pressure gradient. The resulting southerly winds will
continue to usher warm, moist air into the tri-state area.
Temperatures will be mild this morning and during the day, as high
temperatures reach the upper 40s into the 50s by mid-afternoon.
High resolution forecast models do show an increase in cloud cover
through the day, but the saturated layer looks to remain thinner
than previously forecast, minimizing drizzle potential for most of
the area. Perhaps upslope areas along the Buffalo Ridge could
still see some drizzle during the evening, but overall chances are
low.

During the evening and early overnight, the low pressure center will
move northeast through Nebraska into eastern South Dakota. Strong
lift associated with this system will bring rain, moderate at times
between the James River Valley and the Buffalo Ridge. A few claps of
thunder may even be heard where mid-level instability is able to be
tapped. After midnight, cold air to the north will be advected
southward in the wake of the low, causing a switch from rain to
snow for central and south central South Dakota, including places
such as Gregory, Chamberlain, and Lake Andes. Winds will be very
strong given the depth of the low, with sustained winds in the 30
mph range, and gusts 40 to 50 mph. There is still some question as
to how far east the cold air will get during the overnight, but
west of Mitchell, conditions along I-90 (and all roads in this
area) will be dangerous, with whiteout conditions and moderate to
heavy snowfall causing drifting and quick accumulations. A
Blizzard Warning has been issued covering areas where confidence
is high for these conditions.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

The rain-to-snow changeover line will continue to migrate east
through the day Monday. Temperatures will not warm much with thick
cloud cover, so the normal afternoon warm-up will be overshadowed
by changes due to air mass advection around the low pressure
center. Temperatures hover around freezing for most of the
afternoon, but by late afternoon into the evening, a cool-down
will change over remaining rain to snow. Travel Monday evening
will likely be tricky for most areas, with snow, or rain changing
to snow, during the evening commute. Winds will also still be
strong, causing blowing and drifting snow issues.

Monday night into Tuesday, snow and winds are expected to continue,
making for a difficult and slow commute Tuesday morning. Snow tapers
off during the afternoon and evening hours, from northwest to
southeast. Snow totals are still uncertain, and will depend on how
quickly cold air moves in. Totals over 6 inches are possible along
and west of the James River, with lower totals as one heads east. By
Tuesday night, most locations are forecast to get at least 2-3
inches, but wind will make measuring a challenge, with lots of
drifting and potential for higher totals where cold air comes in
early.

Wednesday into next weekend will be less active weather-wise, with a
slow warm up from highs in the upper 20s and low 30s Wednesday to
low 40s by Saturday and Sunday. No major weather systems are
expected during this timeframe.

Ceilings beginning to lower across the area with MVFR stratus
spreading from west to east. Could see some light shower activity
