Runoff from heavier overnight rainfall from one to two inches across areas
near and south of Interstate 90 will create rises to river levels along
the Big Sioux, Rock and Little Sioux Rivers. Some areas along the lower
reaches of these rivers are likely to return to, or experience persistence
of, minor flooding. A brief return to moderate flooding is likely along
areas of the Big Sioux River near Akron.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 333 AM CDT Wed May 9 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 332 AM CDT Wed May 9 2018 Low pressure system has exited the region, with northwest flow developing in its wake. Winds will become breezy by midday at around 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 25 mph. Band of mid clouds streaming across the area this morning will lift by the early afternoon, with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies expected in the afternoon. Jet max dives southeast across east central SD and southwest MN into the afternoon, potentially allowing enough forcing for the some isolated showers or thunderstorms near highway 14. Very dry low levels will keep this activity very spotty. With narrow elevated CAPE and weak shear, do not anticipate and severe weather. Temperatures will reach the 70s, with some areas in the upper 60s near the Buffalo Ridge where clouds may linger longest today. With loss of the heat of the day and the forcing shifting to the southeast, isolated showers and thunderstorms should quickly end in the late afternoon or early evening. Winds drop below 15 mph and shift to the northeast overnight. Clouds will be on the increase from the west late tonight ahead of the next shortwave. Lows are expected in the mid 40s to lower 50s. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) Issued at 332 AM CDT Wed May 9 2018 A Sharp thermal gradient/boundary settles southward across the area on Thursday, with highs only around 60 north of Interstate 29 to the 70s along and south of the Yankton - Spencer corridor. Could see a few scattered showers/thunderstorms in the afternoon as a weak shortwave slides through the area. The better chances of showers and storms comes on Thursday night as a stronger wave track across the region. Convective parameters are conducive for an isolated severe storm along the MO River Thursday evening. Heavy rain will also be possible during the overnight hours with model PW values running around 1.5 inches. Precipitation pulls east of the area on Friday, with a general drying trend through the day. With the baroclinic band lying across our far south. Will have highs around 70 from Sioux City - Storm Lake, though temperatures could be higher or lower across that area if the band shifts one way or the other. Back to the north of this area looking at highs in the 50s and 60s. Showers return for Friday night into Saturday as another shortwave ejects out of an upper level trough over the western CONUS. Saturday will be a cool raw day with breezy northeasterly winds and highs only in the 50s to lower 60s. Better news for the end of the weekend into the beginning of next week, with a gradual warming trend for Sunday into Tuesday as an upper level ridge amplifies a bit over our area while the upper level low continues to spin over the western CONUS. Highs will back into the 70s by Monday and Tuesday.
