Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 632 AM CDT Fri Mar 30 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 430 AM CDT Fri Mar 30 2018 Strong wave moving through the Northern Plains/Great Lakes troughing this morning across northern Minnesota. Warm advection ahead of feature generating a mass of mid clouds across the area, but fairly dry below making radar returns of little concern. More concentrated returns near boundary close to the northern border of SD closer to dynamic tail of wave. May have to watch to see if any of this precipitation wanders toward KBKX/KMML toward mid morning, but likely only a few flurries if it does. The backdoor boundary could slide as far south as I-90 this afternoon, but rapidly does lose upper support to the southward drive by afternoon, and will likely stop short of that goal. Concern is that combination of the slight stabilization and weaker flow, along with the southward push to some lower clouds, could restraint temperatures somewhat north, especially toward the highway 14 corridor, and especially where any snow cover remains toward KMML. To the south, other than concerns with additional clouds as the next upstream wave once again increases lower to mid level warm advection, should be open to warming as much as 10 to 15 degrees over yesterday, with southerly winds becoming fairly brisk by later afternoon toward south central SD. Winds do lack westerly component necessary for the maximum warming potential, even toward south central SD, so highs are expected to vary from near 40 in southwest MN to mid to upper 50s Missouri River valley. As the mid level trough approaches central SD late day and warm advective focus increases over southeast SD, would not be shocked to find an isolated rain shower toward dinnertime, although the drier air down low will again produce a challenge to more than sprinkles. Heading into the evening, southerly winds will increase considerably as low pressure organizes over the western Dakotas. Focus for lift along the elevated warm front will increase, so expect an organizing area of showers to develop mainly east of the James River and progressing eastward with boundary through the evening. Actually is up to 100 J/kg elevated instability on most model profiles, and enough depth to almost consider a remote chance for thunder within showers. Kept coverage mention at scattered during the evening, with southerly winds maintaining a warm surface and aloft conditions for only rain. Moving forward through the night, passage of the wave north of the area overnight will dry out mid-levels as a very strong cold front plows southward across the area. Loss of deep forcing and restriction to more shallow moisture suggests that as sharp cooling occurs the last several hours of the night, likely will not have any significant precipitation remaining, but enough for perhaps a brief threat for very light snow or light freezing rain, but should maintain a minimal impact. The main feature with this front will be the gusty northwest winds which follow, and likely to see 35 to 45 mph gusts for several hours at any location through the late night and early morning. Looking fairly likely for a wind advisory at some point. Used higher MOSGUIDE numbers to give winds a boost, but had to be careful as solution is a bit quicker than the median. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 430 AM CDT Fri Mar 30 2018 Strong winds will continue on Saturday morning, with the peak of winds likely to pass by mid to late morning with the main isallobaric support and start to decreasing gradient aloft. Temps will likely continue to fall well into the morning as we work to shed any postfrontal cloudiness, before a nominal recovery in the yet blustery afternoon. Highs will be mainly in the mid 20s to lower 30s, perhaps some mid 30s toward the lower Missouri valley. Frigid ridge settles across the area on Saturday night, with just a bit of leading westerly gradient remaining across southwest MN. If we don't get at least a half coverage of higher clouds from system passing to our south later Saturday night, temps under the ridge axis could be more in line with some upper single digits, which is right in line with the coldest readings without snowcover at Sioux Falls in local temperature climatological study. At any rate, some variation of teens in place at this time. Sunday will be a day of minor recovery, much less wind, and somewhat filtered sunshine, especially south of I-90, as Easter snow-making system slides by south of the area. Most significant precipitation in the forecast period comes in the form of a couple of waves moving quickly through the strong flow along the northern tier early this week. Due to the nature of the cyclonic zonal pattern, timing of features becomes an issue very quickly in the model evolution, and see as much as 6-12h difference in the weak ridging/enhanced troughing cycling around the parent Canadian upper low. Confidence in details is therefore remaining fairly low. It should be comforting that eventually, solutions seem to get to the same place, just at different pace. However, this opens up to potentially larger swing in temperatures from day to day, such as the difference Monday between the much warmer GFS and the subtly warmer ECMWF. As far as precipitation, warm advective zone on nose of flattening flow should produce mainly light snowfall later Sunday night into early Monday, with temps aloft potentially hinting as a potential mixed type again. As trough once again amplifies flow dropping through the northern Plains Monday night into Tuesday, a nice frontal band develops as baroclinicity sinks southward, with rain changing to snow overnight and potentially dropping a couple inches of snow or a bit more in the process, right now favoring south of I-90. Again looking at temperatures on Tuesday that will likely not mix above freezing, and could easily need a downward adjustment given any snow accumulation over the prior two days. Still below normal into late week, and another weak wave in confluent flow could bring another chance for wintry precipitation Wednesday night into Thursday. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning) Issued at 628 AM CDT Fri Mar 30 2018 The main concern in the near term are MVFR ceilings likely moving into KHON this morning, and then clearing out again toward midday. There are a few guidance reports that show MVFR ceilings making it all the way down to KFSD later this morning. However that solution was not followed due to the low level wind direction being out of the west and southwest toward I 90. A strong cold front will move through tonight creating very brisk northwest winds. Wind speeds will average 25 to 40 knots by after 06Z Saturday.
