.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Mid-Upper level wave dropping southeast across the region today,
which should spread an area of light precipitation across southern
portions of the forecast area. Initially fighting some drier low
levels, so precipitation a little slower to advance into our western
areas early this morning. However, as the wave approaches and lift
increases in response, deeper saturation is expected. Consensus
keeps this deepest saturation south of a line roughly Chamberlain to
Storm Lake, so will stick with mid-range pops there with just a few
flurries or sprinkles farther north toward Sioux Falls and Spencer,
Iowa. Precipitation amounts will remain light, but temperatures
aloft are cold enough to support a little snow or rain/snow mix
through mid-morning, so a dusting of snow is possible in southwest
portions of the forecast area. Temperatures today will remain quite
cool, with highs in the 40s. Thicker clouds and light precip should
hold readings in our south a bit cooler than areas north of I-90,
where more afternoon sun is expected.

Warm front moves into the area tonight, which should hold overnight
temperatures above freezing most areas despite mostly clear skies.
Increasing low level southwesterly winds will result in slightly
stronger winds atop/downstream of the Buffalo Ridge in southwest
Minnesota later tonight, though just breezy with gusts to around
25 mph at times.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Warm front will allow for a bit more mild day on Saturday, with
a sunny start to the day and highs in the 50s across the area.
Incoming cold front will quickly bring an end to the brief warm-up
though, as northwest portions of the area will likely see falling
temperatures, increasing clouds and increasing northwest winds
through the afternoon. Models are spitting out some light precip
across our southern counties with the passage of the front and
trailing wave Saturday afternoon into Saturday night/early Sunday.
Model soundings are generally on the dry side below 700mb, briefly
saturating more deeply across our far southeast as the colder air
pushes in during the evening hours. Thus will keep pops on the lower
side, with a potential for very light rain or light snow for areas
from Sioux City to Storm Lake.

Temperatures behind the front Saturday night are expected to drop
back into the upper 20s-lower 30s, with limited recovery to the
upper 30s-lower 40s in the cold post-frontal air mass on Sunday.
Winds behind the front later Saturday into early Sunday will be on
the breezy side, but at this time momentum transfer from forecast
soundings indicates we should remain well shy of wind advisory
limits.

With the colder air in place Sunday, and decreasing winds/clearing
skies Sunday night, should see our coldest night of the season for
most areas with lows in the lower to mid 20s. However, with recent
sub-freezing lows most areas, and average end of the growing season
upon us, we have ended our frost/freeze headlines for the season.

Dry northwest flow pattern persists into early next week, keeping
temperatures on the cool side of normal through Tuesday, but relief
appears to be in sight mid-late next week with models indicating a
potential for above normal highs in the upper 50s and 60s by late in
this forecast period! Dry weather and sunshine also look prevalent
through the middle portion of next week, but a few models hinting at
a chance of precip returning to parts of the area just beyond this
forecast period on Friday.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning)
Issued at 646 AM CDT Fri Oct 12 2018

As a sharp trough pushes across the area through early this
afternoon, will see a band of light precipitation push out through
southeast SD into northwest IA. Precipitation type will be an
issue for several hours this morning as wet bulb with developing
precipitation battles with retreating colder air. Other than a
brief chance for MVFR visibility with some mix or change to snow
early this morning near KHON, it will be ceilings which drive
conditions into the MVFR range for several hours. Some northward
push of MVFR ceilings is likely prior to precipitation around
KSUX, and other MVFR ceilings will filter in with precipitation
and behind the trough in westerly push for a few hours during the
midday and afternoon before mixing and subsidence remove the
ceiling threat toward I-29.
