.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

The main challenge for today will be cloud cover and possible
impacts on temperatures. Presently seeing stratus covering all but
our far west - Chamberlain to Huron corridor, though current
satellite indicating the stratus expanding westward so these areas
will most likely have low clouds by early morning. Soundings
indicate a strong inversion persisting across the area today, and
with a moist southeasterly low level flow, it is going to be fairly
difficult to break the clouds. Even so, both the RAP/HRRR RH time
sections indicate some thinning of the clouds by afternoon,
especially in our west, so in a warm advective pattern we still may
be able to climb to near 70 over south central SD and the western
James River Valley. Back to the east where clouds may be more
stubborn looking at highs in the lower to mid 60s.

For tonight, a warm front lifts northward across the region as an
upper level shortwave tracks out of Nebraska into our area. While
models are differing in the details with regard to precipitation
potential for the overnight period, with a strong low level jet
developing over our area, cannot rule out a few showers isolated
thunderstorms mainly from the lower MO River Valley/northwest IA/and
parts of southwest MN overnight. With the aforementioned warm air
advection, it will be a very mild night with lows around 60.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

On Wednesday much better mixing will allow for clearing and much
warmer temperatures out ahead of a strong cold front which will
sweep through the area in the afternoon and evening. Precipitation
chances with this system are low with lack of decent moisture and
capping across the area. Thermal profiles support highs closing in
on 90 around Sioux City, with low to mid 80s over the remainder of
the CWA. It will become quite breezy on Wednesday afternoon with
good mixing, then even stronger winds will be realized on Wednesday
night behind the front - in response to strong cold air advection/a
tightening gradient/and winds at the top of the mixed layer of 40 to
45 kts.

With the passage of the front, a huge contrast will be seen in
temperatures on Thursday - with readings around 40 degrees colder
than Wednesday. Highs will only run mid 40s to lower 50s. In
addition to the cold temperatures, rain is expected to develop as
warm air advection aloft overspreads the area out ahead of an upper
level shortwave lifting out of the Four Corners region. Rain will
then continue into Thursday night. As a mention, if precipitation
were to develop early enough in the morning on Thursday, thermal
profiles aloft would support a rain/snow mix through the western
Highway 14 corridor - though it would be very brief with no snow
accumulation expected.

With warm air advection, Friday looks to be a much milder day with
highs back into the upper 50s to mid 60s. The remainder of the
extended period will be characterized by below normal temperatures,
with increasing precipitation chances, focused mainly on the Sunday
night into Monday period as strong low pressure shifts into the
region.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning)

Low stratus and patchy fog will continue to be a concern today,
with MVFR and IFR ceilings blanketing nearly the entire forecast
area. Expect ceilings to improve gradually today, mainly to the
west of I-29, while areas east will likely continue to see MVFR or
isolated IFR ceilings through at least 06z. Models suggest some
improvement after 06z, as drier air works into the region, but
timing is rather uncertain. Wind shear will also become a concern
late in the TAF period after 06z with the low level jet producing
southwest winds around 40 to 45 KT at 2000 feet AGL. Main areas of
concern for LLWS is southeast of a Lake Andes to Sioux Falls to
Marshall line.
