Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 627 AM CDT Tue Sep 25 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 333 AM CDT Tue Sep 25 2018 A pronounced shortwave and frontogenesis in the 750:650 mb layer has resulted in an expansive area of rain early this morning over southern portions of SD and northern NE. This activity will continue to work eastward through the morning and should give just about everyone measurable rainfall. While moisture profiles are certainly better than with yesterday's shower activity, still don't expect amounts to be overly heavy. Observations out west have generally ranged from a couple tenths to up to a half an inch. Expect this to largely be the case over our area as well although wouldn't rule out a couple higher amounts, especially west of the James River. By this afternoon and early evening, the main trough axis should reside squarely over our area with the main precipitation activity pushed to our east. With that said, a reinforcing shot of cold air in the 850:700 mb layer will result in a few hundred Joules of MUCAPE. This will likely be enough to spark some instability showers/weak thunderstorms, mainly along and north of I-90. Boosted winds a bit over our NW zones with the CAA and wouldn't be surprised to see a few gust in the 30-40 kt range with any afternoon shower activity with forecast sounding showing favorable mixing capability. System pushes fully east of our area tonight with clearing skies. This will lead to a chilly morning with lows hovering a couple degrees either side of 40. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 333 AM CDT Tue Sep 25 2018 The region will sit in a northwest flow aloft regime Wednesday on the backside of the broad upper level trough. With surface high pressure building to the south, look for mostly clear skies and high temperatures in the 60s. Our next jet max and surface front dives southward through the area Wednesday night and Thursday. Moisture is pretty limited so don't expect much in the way of precipitation with the initial surface front, just some added cloud cover. A better chance of some shower activity will come Thursday night into Friday as an elongated shortwave interacts with the mid level front draped across the area. The previously mentioned surface cold front will also reinforce the seasonably cool air with 925 mb temps only in the +1 to +5 C range by Saturday. Lowered temperatures closer to raw model values for Friday as bias corrected and MOS guidance likely is having an negative impact. Will also need to keep an eye on low temperatures Saturday morning as some locations could dip into the mid 30s bringing frost into the conversation. Tis the season... By late weekend into early next week, the flow becomes more zonal to southwesterly aloft with a warm front and associated mid level warm air advection providing for more widespread rainfall. Details are still fuzzy however with this being on the outer edges of the extended forecast. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning) Issued at 624 AM CDT Tue Sep 25 2018 IFR and lower end MVFR will be a widespread threat this morning as rainfall passes through the area. The challenging location is KHON. They have remained just north of these conditions and are currently VFR. But trends indicate that they too may receive MVFR ceilings by mid to late morning before going VFR again as the afternoon progresses. For KFSD and KSUX, MVFR will likely linger into the afternoon hours before clearing out just before 00Z. There may be a few isolated TSRA around this afternoon, but at this time the chances for that are too skittish to put in a point location like a TAF.
