Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 608 PM CDT Sat Sep 22 2018 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday) Issued at 234 PM CDT Sat Sep 22 2018 A strong southerly pressure gradient will be in place tonight into Sunday as a trough of low pressure digs across the Northern and Central Rockies. This will keep temperatures warmer overnight with lows from the mid 40s to lower 50s. On Sunday an inverted trough of low pressure at the surface will nose into central SD with southerly flow remaining strong ahead of it. Moisture is sparse so showers and thunderstorms are highly unlikely. There is some forcing along a mid level boundary with very steep lapse rates aloft, but that appears to be north of the area and will still struggle with moisture as well. Highs Sunday will range from the mid 70s in northwest IA to the mid 80s in central SD. .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday) Issued at 234 PM CDT Sat Sep 22 2018 On Sunday night a weakening right entrance region of the upper level jet will swing through and with it will come a small chance for post frontal showers and thunderstorms. Severe weather and heavy rain appear unlikely and at least through late Sunday night the main threats will be west of the James River. Monday will see cooler air settle in as the upper level jet shifts east. Moisture and a little instability will swing through the area but still quite a bit of mid and low level dry air so confidence in coverage a little low. Will stick with about a 30 percent chance or lower. Highs on Monday will be in the 60s west of Interstate 29 and in the 70s east, with possibly falling temperatures in the afternoon. The small chance for showers will linger into Monday night and Tuesday morning as the main upper level trough swings through. Again not much of a chance for severe weather or heavy rain. The next system of interest will be Wednesday night as a fast moving system swings through ahead of a fairly strong 120-130 knot upper level jet.
