Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 616 AM CDT Sat Sep 22 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 303 AM CDT Sat Sep 22 2018 The region will see a much needed break from precipitation over at least the next couple of days, although river flooding will continue to be an ongoing concern. This dry weather will come courtesy of building surface high pressure to the east and fairly zonal flow aloft. To start the day, clear skies have allowed many locations to drop into the upper 30s to mid 40s as of early this morning. Very patchy and fleeting fog has also been observed, although regional dewpoint depressions would suggest any fog would stay very hit or miss. Overall, a fairly nice fall-like day expected with afternoon high temperatures in the mid 60s east of I-29 to mid to upper 70s near the MO River. Southerly winds will be on the breezy side however with some gusts in the 25-30 mph range. This southerly flow will also help to usher in slightly higher dewpoints and prevent overnight temperatures early Sunday from dipping quite as low, or generally in the upper 40s to lower 50s. .LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday) Issued at 303 AM CDT Sat Sep 22 2018 By Sunday, the next west coast trough swings through the Rockies with lee cyclogenesis once again resulting in a tight surface pressure gradient and gusty southerly winds. Boosted winds closer to CONSMOS values for this reason. Temperatures Sunday will also warm another several degrees over today's readings with 925 mb temps anywhere from the upper teens C in our east to upper 20s C in our west, or in other words, a west to east temperature gradient from mid 80s to mid 70s. Main shortwave and jet energy scoots to our north Sunday night with a trailing cold front nudging into our far northwest zones. This cold front then swings through the rest of our area during the daytime hours Monday with accompanying shower chances. Thunderstorm chances are pretty limited other than in NW IA during the afternoon/early evening when instability and mid level lapse rate values are more favorable. Heavy rain is not anticipated at this time with the progressive nature of the boundary. After the frontal passage, afternoon high temperatures will largely run in the 60s for the remainder of the week. Next jet max punches in within the northwest flow by Wednesday night as a broad upper level low spins through the northern plains. This will allow for our next chance of showers along with some breezy winds.
