Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 614 AM CDT Thu Sep 6 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 245 AM CDT Thu Sep 6 2018 Surface high pressure moving into northern Minnesota early this morning will provide mostly sunny skies and seasonably comfortable temperatures today, with light northeast winds switching around to the east and southeast through the day. Subtle wave approaches tonight, but any appreciable moisture will be tied up by weakening remnants of Gordon drifting slowly through Arkansas, while our slowly retreating surface high maintains drier low levels. So while southern parts of the area will see some increase in mid-high clouds tonight, precipitation threat should remain south of the area. Northeast parts of the area, under the greatest influence of the high pressure, could again see nighttime temperatures dip just below 50, while the increasing clouds in our south hold readings in the mid 50s through the Missouri Valley. .LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday) Issued at 245 AM CDT Thu Sep 6 2018 Surface high drifts slowly east across eastern Canada through the weekend, with an upper ridge shifting through the Upper Midwest directing the wet remnants of Gordon through the mid-Mississippi and western Ohio Valleys. Low level flow remains under control of the Canadian high pressure, keeping humidity levels in the more comfortable range through the first half of the weekend. Flow turns a bit more southerly by Sunday, which begins to draw higher dew points in the 60s northward into the region for the first part of next week. This will result in gradually warmer overnight lows as we progress through the weekend, while daytime highs remain a few degrees shy of normal. Deeper southerly flow develops as the Canadian high shifts into the maritime provinces, which should lead to warmer air building across the region through the middle of next week. Broad trough slides across the Upper Midwest Monday, followed by weak waves traversing the region in developing southwest flow aloft through midweek.
