Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 608 AM CDT Fri Aug 24 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 437 AM CDT Fri Aug 24 2018 Early morning water vapor imagery indicates center of upper-level low pressure drifting into northeast SD. PV advection, steep mid- level lapse rates and low-level jet focus to the southeast of feature is resulting in very isolated clusters of thunderstorms from southwest MN through KFSD area to extreme northeast NE at 08z. Threat for these storms captured in the short-range HRRR fairly adequately and will continue shift focus slowly eastward through early morning with progression of lift forcing along with the larger scale features. Near-surface convergence feature will lag somewhat with progression of upper feature, and in the short term this will allow lower clouds to blanket areas of I-29 and eastward into the morning hours, eroded only by the gradual shift in winds to the southwest and west surface and aloft. Some fog/drizzle likely to linger through early morning mainly parts of southwest MN and northwest IA. As upper low pushes east into central/southern MN today, some question remains as to how much the lingering low level convergence boundary will play at organizing convection, or will be it be limited to scattered coverage around the upper circulation through southwest MN during the afternoon. Suggestion in most evening and overnight models is that weak surface trough will still be in the area by mid to late afternoon. While the better larger scale lift forcing will be well east of the area, if this boundary lingers enough and can destabilize enough after shaking off the cloudiness, a small window would exist for an environment with some pretty decent 0-3km and 0-6km shear from mid to late afternoon toward the far eastern tier (east of Highway 59). At this point, only a VERY conditional risk for a severe storm, which could be capable of large hail, damaging wind or even a brief tornado. A shift in near surface winds to west or even southwest would begin to diminish this risk. Certainly will have a better chance to heat out behind boundary with drying and less overall cloudiness through the western Missouri River corridor, where temps should mix into the lower to mid 80s with a much more comfortable dew point than readings to east with temps in the upper 70s to near 80. A couple of showers/storms may linger into early evening, but as upper low pulls away and sharp mid-level ridging develops overnight, will see skies clearing and winds becoming light. Would not be out of the question for some shallow fog overnight, mainly low-lying areas as temps fall into the upper 50s to lower 60s. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 437 AM CDT Fri Aug 24 2018 Quick changes in conditions on Saturday as flow quickly increasing from a southerly direction at the surface and the building upper ridge axis flattens and shifts east of the area. Moisture returns very quickly below expansion of steep mid-level lapse rates, but appears to be well-capped (+11 to +14C around 750-700 hPa) through late afternoon with MLCIN 200-300 J/kg at/after peak heating. With lack of focal point, cannot see cap being broken. Bulk of the more significant surface heat will hang up west of the James River where highs will reach the lower to mid 90s. Some capped/ragged cumulus likely east, more a sign of the increased humidity and strong inversion aloft holding readings more mid to upper 80s. Convergence axis out in central SD would seem to be the only hope for convection heading into Saturday evening. With the warm/dry layer to the east, unlikely that too much would stray far from the initiation point, but the degree of potential instability and the location on the southern edge of westerlies aloft would bring a severe threat with storms that may manage to develop. Again conditional. Boundary could get a small kick on the southern tail of wave pushing over ridge, but temps aloft could easily hold fairly strong and warm and limit any later potential for convection. There is another wave which rides up the subtropical stream through the central Rockies and emerges through Nebraska later Saturday night. Expect a better shot for late night convection to stream northeast toward northeast NE/far southeast SD/northwest IA where temps aloft are a shade cooler and low-level jet remains a bit more focused. Stronger wave aloft will begin to push into the northern Rockies on Sunday, and this will only induce any wandering southward to the boundary to cease with a renewed southerly flow across the region. Temps continue very warm aloft and after the morning push to convection with southern wave through the southeast half of the area, don't see much of a threat with main warm advective focus on edge of EML pushing north and east. While humidity will be high once again, temps could be restrained by extensive clouds especially near/east of I-29. Going into the evening, will be under the heart of the warm bubble aloft, limiting convection chances. Likely would have to see if any organized convection developing across northern SD/southern ND could take the common right turn into the instability axis and perhaps brush the KBKX/KMML areas later at night, but at this point does not appear favorable for this to occur. This northern stream wave will push into the ridge Monday into Tuesday and gradually drive the frontal boundary southeast across the area Monday night into early Tuesday, likely bringing the best chance for storms. Heavy rain and some severe weather would be possible, but details are not there at this point to draw any solid conclusions given several convective chances prior. Once trough passes by, cooler and drier surface ridge appears to settle in across the area Wednesday into early Thursday. However, the rebuilding ridge later in the week will initiate some warm advection later Wed. night and early Thursday with a threat for some accas-type storms. Set up again could become somewhat volatile to nocturnal convection with return of low-level baroclinicity and impact of the LLJ with waves crossing the broad ridging. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning) Issued at 603 AM CDT Fri Aug 24 2018 Low stratus and areas of fog will continue to blanket the area through mid to late morning. Main impacts will be seen along and east of the James River. MVFR and IFR ceilings and well as visibility will be possible, but will improve to VFR by midday. Models suggest that light winds and low level moisture could result in patch MVFR and IFR shallow fog late tonight near the end of the TAF period, once again primarily along and east of the James River. Confidence in how widespread this fog will be is too low to mention in TAF at this time, but will be something to monitor. && .FSD WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... SD...None. MN...None. IA...None.
