Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 620 AM CDT Tue Aug 7 2018 .SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight) Issued at 312 AM CDT Tue Aug 7 2018 A weakening line of convection continues to move eastward and will exit our forecast area over the next couple of hours. The very distinct upper level wave that helped spark this convection is evident on satellite imagery spinning through central and eastern South Dakota. Additionally, as skies begin to clear behind this line of convection, patchy fog has developed over portions of northern Nebraska with a similar trend possible across NW Iowa thru around the daybreak hours. This previously mentioned wave will be slow to propagate eastward through the day, and with little in the the way of convective inhibition, will continue to allow for hit or miss shower and thunderstorm chances along and east of I-29. Not expecting the coverage of any daytime storms to be as widespread as it was with the overnight activity as the main dynamic forcing is now lacking. As this shortwave moves into Minnesota, subsidence on the backside should be enough to shut off any remaining precipitation by the early evening hours. Diurnally driven cumulus will begin to build in by afternoon, more pronounced for areas along and east of I-29. With that, afternoon highs for the eastern half of our area will top out a couple degrees either side of 80 while areas near and west of the James River will see upper 80s to near 90. Winds will remain light. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 312 AM CDT Tue Aug 7 2018 Wednesday will begin our period of quiet and dry weather across the region. An upper level ridge will begin to amplify over the intermountain west leaving us in the relatively clean northwesterly flow aloft. A very weak wave swings through Thursday night, but even that looks to pass through dry so not expecting much in the way of any precipitation through at least the weekend. As the ridge axis begins to translate east some, 850 mb temperatures creep up as well allowing for warming temperatures. In general, expect afternoon high temperatures to top out in the low to mid 90s west of the James River with mid to perhaps upper 80s elsewhere. These temperatures would a few degrees above their climatological normals for this time of year. A very relaxed pressure gradient will keep winds light and a relatively dry atmospheric column will keep skies sunny. All in all, not a bad extended forecast ahead for us. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Wednesday morning) Issued at 618 AM CDT Tue Aug 7 2018 A few hit or miss showers and thunderstorms remain possible through the morning and afternoon hours for locations east of I-29. As of now, chances of any of this activity impacting KFSD or KSUX appears far too low to include mention in the TAF.
