.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

The remnants of overnight convection will move into the area west of
the James River this morning, but the lightning threat should
quickly wane as storms and showers approach places like Huron and
Chamberlain, since instability is lacking east of the Missouri
River. A brief period of light rain showers is possible early
this morning, but these will be isolated in nature. Further east
in southwest MN, there is a chance for some patchy fog where skies
remain clear and the light east winds favor upslope flow. Dense
or widespread fog is not expected, and hi-res models have all fog
dissipate by mid- morning.

Late morning through the afternoon looks to be pleasant for the tri-
state area , with similar temperatures to yesterday (around 80 for
highs). During the evening, thunderstorms are expected to develop
over central SD, where low-level southerly flow brings in enhanced
moisture and CAPE. Storms will progress eastward through the evening
and overnight, bringing increasing chances rain. A few storms could
be strong, with Chamberlain, Gregory, Lake Andes, and surrounding
communities being in the region currently favored by CAMs. Rainfall
totals are not overly impressive, as the front appears to weaken
in the diffluent flow aloft, but brief heavy rains cannot be
ruled out under thunderstorm cores. By sunrise Monday, the front
will likely be along the I-29 corridor, with rain showers and
cloud cover to start the day here.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

The medium range features a chance of thunderstorms by mid-week and
cooler than average temperatures. Northwest flow aloft continues to
prevail this week as a strong upper ridge remains centered over the
southwest/Four Corners.

Monday: Cold front should slide east of I-29 by 12Z Monday, allowing
for some spotty showers/storms in the morning hours across southwest
MN and northwest IA. Expect a drying trend and a decrease in cloud
cover by the afternoon as a surface high settles in.

A shortwave overriding the aforementioned ridge and a surface front
could bring a chance of showers and storms Tuesday evening into
Wednesday. Model output still differs in timing, location and QPF.
The ECMWF is the most aggressive bringing high QPF west of I-29
while the GFS and NAM bring low QPF or a split in PoPs across the
CWA. At this time, severe weather potential is low, but the upper
jet and WAA could provide forcing for some storms, depending on
placement of the frontal boundary.

High confidence continues in the overall temperature pattern for the
last days of July. Models do agree into bring near to below than
normal temperatures. Monday will start off slightly cooler than
average with highs in the upper 70s and mid 80s. As the cold front
moves over the area by mid-week, temperatures will be around 10
degrees below normal for the rest of the long term. Daytime highs in
the 70s and lower 80s. Overnight lows from mid 50s to mid 60s.

Showers near and south of KHON will quickly diminish this morning.
Light south and southeast winds prevail during the day. High cloud
cover will increase today, with thunderstorm and rain chances
rising this evening as a cold front moves in from the west. Those
west of KMHE have the higher chances for lightning in the
vicinity from 23/0000z through 23/0600z. Overnight into Monday
morning, this cold front will approach KFSD & KSUX. Winds shift
out of the north behind this front, and could gust 15 to 20 kts
for a few hours behind the front. Rain chances linger into
Monday.
