Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 1032 PM CDT Fri Jul 20 2018 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 251 PM CDT Fri Jul 20 2018 Relatively quiet weather will continue into the weekend as the large upper low currently evident over WI spins away from our region. Meanwhile, an upper level ridge will continue to build to our west leaving us in a northwest flow aloft regime. Given a very weakly/non capped environment, small chance there could be a few showers or weak thunderstorms over the Buffalo Ridge area of SW Minnesota on the backside of the low late this afternoon. In fact, a few very weak radar returns are noted along the MN/SD/ND border as of mid afternoon. Winds should also continue to tapper off into the overnight hours as the gradient slackens. With this, can't completely rule out some patchy, likely shallow, fog development for low lying areas early Saturday morning. Saturday looks to be a very nice day as the region starts to see more influence from the building upper level ridge. Dry conditions, less wind, and temperatures in mid 70s to low 80s are expected. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday) Issued at 251 PM CDT Fri Jul 20 2018 Things start to change some by Sunday with a couple of different chances of showers/thunderstorms. The first chance comes west of the James River early Sunday with what appears to be a decaying thunderstorm complex on the edge of a lead wave and push of warm advection. A second chance of thunderstorms arrives late Sunday and Sunday night with the approach of a jet streak to the north and boundary swinging through the region. Could be at least some low end risk for a strong storm or two with the second round Sunday and thus can't argue with the day 3 Marginal from SPC across our western CWA. Outside of some lingering precip chances early, Monday looks to start the work week off fairly quiet again with temperatures near or below normal, or mainly upper 70s and low 80s. Yet another wave and associated front arrive Tuesday night into Wednesday and will bring another chance of storms. Still plenty of details to be worked out but given current progged shear and instability profiles, could be some severe risk with this system as well. An active jet overhead and lingering boundary will keep at least some occasional precip chances going through late week but much will depend on convective evolution from earlier in the week. For now will just maintain the populated blended POPs.
