.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)

Rain will continue this morning as a shortwave trough moves through
the region. The flash flood threat is waning as thunderstorm motion
no longer remains parallel to the slowly advancing front. That being
said, precipitable water values remain near 2.0 inches, so elevated
convection continues to have plenty of moisture to work with. For
this reason, will keep the Flash Flood Watch running through mid-
morning. Short range convective models are nearly unanimous in
decreasing rain coverage and rainfall rates by late morning, as
the better lift provided by modest vorticity advection moves east
of the tri-state area.

This afternoon will see a return of thunderstorms, primarily in the
Sioux City and northwest Iowa portions of the region. It is here
that daytime heating helps to re-invigorate storms along the
elevated frontal boundary. Severe storms look unlikely, given CAPE
struggling to reach 1000 J/kg and bulk shear values of around 25
kts. However, areas around and southeast of Storm Lake, IA will be
where stronger storms are most likely, given better instability as
one heads toward central Iowa. The juicy atmosphere southeast of the
front will lead to a marginal threat for heavy rain in this same
area.

Places west of I-29 and north of I-90 will likely experience a
largely dry day today, as cooler and drier air filters in behind the
aforementioned front. Highs will be in upper 70s, which is below
average for a change.

After sunset, most storms will have dissipated or moved well to the
east, leaving only hit or miss showers in the forecast for northwest
Iowa, and dry conditions elsewhere.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)
Issued at 431 AM CDT Fri Jul 13 2018

Saturday and Sunday will continue the trend of slightly cooler than
average, with highs around 80 and partly cloudy skies. Rain cannot
be totally ruled out, given a few upper level impulses moving over
the ridge aloft, but it's not until Sunday evening that a more
robust shortwave looks to force a boundary through the area. This
will serve as a focus for more showers and thunderstorms. The
orientation of wave looks to make the front more progressive, and
rainfall amounts have trended downward from previous model runs, so
flooding issues look to be less likely with this system.

The beginning of next week is forecast to be dry as a surface high
pressure builds in the wake of Sunday night's front. Temperatures
remain at or just below seasonal averages, around 80 degrees for
highs. It's not until Wednesday that the next round of widespread
rain looks to arrive. Models disagree on the details of this system,
but generally move it through the region by Thursday afternoon,
after which another dry period ends the week.

Showers and a few rumbles of thunder hanging around the area at
issuance time, mainly impacting FSD and SUX. By midday, the
thunder threat at these two terminals should be over with,
although redevelopment of showers and storms is possible around
SUX. With low confidence on timing this afternoon, left out any
mention of thunder there for now. Other than that, VFR ceilings
are expected, save for sporadic low clouds occasionally forming
IFR/MVFR ceilings early this morning.
