Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sioux Falls SD 641 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday) Issued at 333 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 Easterly flow has continued today, bringing in continued rain, albeit with lower intensity than yesterday in the form of light showers. Expect these lingering showers to dissipate by this evening as the closed low aloft finally departs to the southeast and the drier air aloft seen in the 12z MPX and GRB RAOBs continues to filter into the region. Only minor additional rain amounts are expected, which is good news for our hydro situation. Despite the respite from additional rain, expecting some river flooding in several locations as the water from yesterday's and last night's rain runs off. For more information on the immediate hydrology situation, see the hydrology discussion below. Tonight, clouds will begin to break up as the previously mentioned drier air filters in. The amount of and eastward extent of the clearing will determine how cool places will get tonight. Went with the lower end of consensus west of the James and higher end of consensus elsewhere. Subtle ridging aloft will build in for Friday, leading to a nice and dry day. With another wave approaching from the west, expecting a light breeze in our western zones and high reaching the lower 80s there. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday) Issued at 333 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 The extended forecast begins with another period of unsettled weather Friday night through Saturday evening as the next wave forces ascent across the region. Friday night's shower and storm chances are tempered by a capping warm layer aloft around 750-800mb. By Saturday, cooling aloft should lead to some showers and thunderstorms. Not expecting widespread organized convection given relatively skinny CAPE profiles and weak shear, but could have a strong storm or two. The pattern continues with another round of subtle ridging Sunday before another cut off upper low approaches during the Monday/Tuesday time period. Progged PWAT values ahead of of this are above 1.5", but this time the upper low is a bit farther north and there seems to be more convective potential to the south in a regional sense with this system. This would suggest rain in the wrap around region would be north of our CWA and moisture transport may be interrupted by convection to the south. In turn, this suggests a repeat of the widespread heavy rain is not likely, but will need to watch this period just in case. As for the severe potential in our CWA, instability once again looks marginal and progged shear profiles are anemic. Zonal flow aloft takes over by the middle of next week as a large summer ridge builds into the southern Plains. As we commonly see in zonal flow regimes, guidance disagrees on the timing of various small upper disturbances, requiring the forecast to have a few spotty chances of showers and storms. Otherwise, expect temperatures to slowly trend upward through Thursday. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Friday evening) Issued at 630 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 Showers will slowly taper off across the region late this evening into the overnight hours. Issued at 333 PM CDT Thu Jun 21 2018 Runoff from a widespread 3 to 6 inches rainfall over the last 36 hours has brought many area creeks, streams and rivers into flood. Over the next several days, sites from Sioux Falls southward on the Big Sioux, Parker southward on the Vermillion, Sheldon to Struble on the Floyd, Ocheyedan, Little Sioux, Redwood and Des Moines rivers will reach flood stage, many sites at a moderate to major level. Complicating forecasts and the speed of the fall is the amount of water in surrounding lowland areas. For those areas not covered by gauged waterways, the significant degree of ponding and small stream flooding will be covered by an Areal Flood Warning in effect until midday Friday.
