Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Flagstaff AZ 939 AM MST Sun Dec 30 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Cold temperatures this morning will give way to warmer temperatures this afternoon. Another cold front Monday will spread snow from north to south across northern Arizona. Snow to persist across southern Navajo and Apache Counties Monday night. Skies will clear from west to east Tuesday. Expect dry weather and a warming trend Wednesday through Saturday. && .UPDATE...Skies are mainly sunny this morning outside of a few low clouds north of Saint Johns and Holbrook. It was another cold night, but temperatures should finally break the freezing mark along the Mogollon Rim this afternoon which will be the first time since last Wednesday. The valleys of northeast Arizona are still likely to remain cold this afternoon (possibly staying below freezing) due to deeper temperature inversions. The focus for this afternoon's forecast package will be on the next storm system which will affect the region starting in far northern AZ Monday morning and spreading south and east through the day. Another round of snow and very cold temperatures is on the way - stay tuned for any winter weather products that could be issued later today. && .PREV DISCUSSION /427 AM MST/...Today will start cold, but warm with clear skies and light winds. Expect winds to pick up out of the southwest overnight ahead of the approaching trough and cold front moving down from the north. Look for snow to begin early Monday morning along the Utah border and spread south into central Coconino, Navajo and Apache Counties by noon Monday. Snow will move off to the southeast in the evening with showers lingering along the Mogollon Rim and over the White Mountains over night and into Tuesday morning before moving out of the area. Model runs continue the downward trend for moisture associated with this system with most of the moisture staying to the southeast. Temperatures will stay cold Tuesday with northerly breezes advecting cold, dry air into the area. Wednesday will see low temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below normal in the morning, but will warm under clear skies in the afternoon. Long Term...Thursday morning will see the warming trend begin in earnest as daytime high temperatures begin to climb back toward climatological normal values. Quiet weather is expected through the saturday as a low amplitude ridge continues over the area through the end of the week. By Sunday models are beginning to show the next winter storm that could impact the area through early next week. Have increased pops to account for increasing confidence in a winter weather event occurring, but confidence over timing and impacts remains low this far into the future. && .AVIATION...For the 18Z Package...VFR conditions for the next 18 hrs. Winds will become SW by late afternoon at generally 5-10 kts through sunset. Cloud cover will begin to increase along the UT/AZ border and fill in towards the south after 02Z Mon. Chances for -SHSN begin at KPGA and north of KGCN after 06Z Mon and spread south throughout the morning. Local MVFR conditions possible in areas of showers. Aviation discussion not updated for TAF amendments. && .FIRE WEATHER...Dry conditions and below normal temperatures are expected through Sunday. Another cold front will bring a chance of snow showers throughout Monday, along with southwest winds.
