Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Peachtree City GA 343 AM EST Fri Feb 9 2018 .SHORT TERM /Today through Saturday/... Broad cyclonic flow is in place across the majority of the CONUS this morning. Located in the southern stream of this flow pattern exists a broad...weak area of low pressure across western Mexico and adjacent Pacific waters. This feature will help establish and enhance deep moisture across the region thru the short term. Water vapor loop this morning captures the advection of high clouds into the local area from the west. Meanwhile in the lower levels high pressure centered across the PA/NJ area is extending its ridge influence down the lee side of the Appalachians and allowing for a weak wedge across northern and eastern Ga. Throughout the day today...moisture will increase pretty rapidly as a weak vort lobe extending from southern stream low moves from south to north. This will allow for an increase in cloud cover through the day as well as the development of showers. Although weak ridging will keep most areas stable...elevated instability is possible across central Georgia this afternoon. Have kept thunder at slight chance for now. QPF totals did not come out too high today but it starts to set the scene for the foreseeable future. Overnight Friday into early Saturday...weak axis of moisture along vort lobe will push into north Georgia where rain chances will remain highest thru the night. As this sets up...a shortwave will begin to dig into the Intermountain West which will help eject numerous small impulses from the southern stream trough into the Southeast. This in itself will provide sufficient lift to enhance rain chances across the northern and western portions of the area...however this will also be aided by the advection of Gulf moisture ahead of the next frontal system and that will be approaching the area. This will make for a rather sloppy day on Saturday for most locations in the CWA. In addition...lessening influence of sfc high will allow for higher instability so thunder chances will be higher on Saturday /no severe/. All this combined will begin to increase the threat for flooding...esp across the north. Kovacik .LONG TERM /Saturday Night through Thursday/... Rain will persist through the extended period, southwest flow aloft and surface front remains across the area through midweek. As the trough remains anchored over the desert southwest Sunday, a surface front will slowly move southeast through midday Monday. While front pushes east, it remains in the proximity of east and central GA through Tuesday and have kept likely or higher pops through Tuesday. Models now showing enough instability each day Sunday through Tuesday to warrant slight chance thunderstorms each day. Models are indicating more of a zonal upper level flow setting up midweek and we may see a brief respite from the rain. Have continued chance POPs Wednesday and Thursday. Guidance temperatures are in line with above normal values through the period with afternoon highs in the 60s and lows in the mid 40s to near 60. Atwell && .HYDROLOGY... Weekend rainfall totals are expected to be 2 to 4 inches in north Georgia, with the highest amounts generally expected in the higher elevations. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches possible generally north of a line from Americus to Macon to Washington. South of this line, rainfall amounts through Monday morning will generally be 1.5 inches or less. At this time, area creeks and rivers remain high from the recent heavy rainfall, and these waters have crested and are generally in their downward trend. With moist soils and above normal streamflow expected through the next week, the threat of flash flooding remains a concern. Abnormally high PWs over the region will allow for efficient rainfall processes and high rainfall amounts. Locally higher rainfall amounts of 4+ inches are possible, and areas that have experienced flooding over the last week will again be susceptible. Please stay alert to changing conditions. At this time, the WPC has issued marginal threat of excessive rainfall for areas generally north of a line from Carrollton to Athens and northward.
