Updated for the 18Z Aviation Discussion. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 346 AM EST Wed Dec 26 2018/ SHORT TERM /Today through Thursday/... Models all agree in bringing in the next major storm system beginning late tonight. For today, this will likely be the last dry day for several days as high pressure will continues over the CWA. Changes begin tonight as the ridge of high pressure wedges into north GA. This will increase the pressure gradient which in turn will increase the easterly winds. The deepest moisture holds off until Thursday morning, and with ample isentropic lift, chances of rain will begin late tonight over the extreme western parts of the CWA. Chances of rain will spread across the CWA and increase through the day Thursday. Rainfall amounts on Thursday will be low with most areas seeing 0.10" or less. MOS Guidance continues to be running too cool on the max temps, the NAM especially has been running 5 to 7 degrees too cold with the GFS 2 to 4 degrees too cold. Have raise max temps today to at or just a little warmer than the GFS guidance. Have gone with a MAV/MET blend on temps Thursday due to a change in airmass, wedge and clouds. 17 LONG TERM /Thursday Night through Tuesday/... The primary concern for the long term continues to be multiple rounds of rainfall and a continued flooding threat. There is also the remote chance that we could see a few strong storms on Friday. The first round will likely have the heaviest rainfall in the Thursday night and Friday timeframe. The axis of heaviest rainfall has shifted to N GA and especially the mountain counties. A flood or flash flood watch will likely be issued as confidence on timing and amounts improves. There looks to be a relative lull in the rainfall late Friday and Friday night before the next round late Saturday and more so Saturday night into Sunday, as another surge of deep moisture moves over the area. Another round of rainfall looks to be in the cards Monday into Tuesday. This unsettled weather pattern is due to an active SW flow aloft and eventually a front that will stall across the area Saturday into Tuesday or there abouts. There is also potential for strong winds at the higher elevations of the mountains Thursday night ahead of the expected cold front that will eventually stall across the area. Please stay tuned to your local weather during this active weather period. BDL Hydrology... Wet conditions are expected through years end, with the most concerning period at this time being Thursday through Friday. The current forecast is indicating 2 to 5 inches of rainfall over almost the entire forecast area and isolated higher amounts are always possible, especially in the mountains. The axis of greatest rainfall has shifted north and is centered over N GA at this time with the greatest amounts over the mountains. Forecast amounts through Jan 1st range from 3.5 to 5.5 inches over N GA and 1.5 to 3.5 inches over central GA. These amounts combined with already wet to saturated soils, will greatly increase the risk of flash flooding and river flooding over north and central Georgia.
