Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service El Paso Tx/Santa Teresa NM 442 AM MST Tue Jan 9 2018 .SYNOPSIS... Moderate southwest flow aloft will give the Borderland one more day of well above normal temperatures along with considerable high clouds, as a Pacific storm system moves toward the area. This system will begin producing a few showers west of Deming this afternoon and then spread over most of the rest of the area tonight and Wednesday. Snow levels will fall to around 7500 feet late tonight and then to around 6500 feet Wednesday as the surface cold front pushes through, with moderate snow possible above 7000 feet as temperatures fall below normal. Strong winds will also accompany the front, and some blowing dust could develop over the lowlands. An upper ridge builds back in over the western U.S. Thursday into the weekend, clearing the skies and allowing warmer temperatures back in. && .DISCUSSION... Strong southwest flow aloft developing ahead of incoming Pacific storm system. Flow is tapping considerable sub-tropical moisture but looks to be mainly mid and high level moisture. As airmass slowly moistens from top down, a few showers could develop as early as this afternoon west of Deming. The showers will slowly spread to most of the remainder of the area tonight, though Hudspeth County may not see any showers until Wednesday. Surface front will also sweep east with the upper system, with the front reaching western New Mexico Wednesday morning. Snow levels will start out today above all terrain, but by tonight should drop to around 7500-8500 feet, lowest over the Gila/Black Range. Snow levels will drop to around 6500 feet Wednesday with the passage of the front. Moderate snow is possible over the mountains, and the Gila/Black Range could approach advisory levels, with 3-5 inches possible. The Sacramentos could see 2-4 inches, mostly over the west slopes to the ridgeline, with the east slopes remaining in more of a precip shadow. Other impact to watch with the system is the winds. Winds will become strong from Deming west Wednesday morning, with the strong winds spreading east over the rest of the area by mid day. Both snow and winds could approach advisory level, but will let day shift have one last look at latest models. Some blowing dust also possible where showers haven't wetted the ground. Remainder of forecast period pretty benign, as upper ridge builds back over the western U.S., behind the exiting storm. Northwest flow will dominate, with very few clouds and little chance of any precip.
