.SYNOPSIS...Showers and thunderstorms will impact the region
tonight, followed by a period of heavy rain and strong winds
Thursday afternoon, and again Friday morning. Drier weather is
expected during the weekend, with wet and windy weather
redeveloping during early to middle portions of next week.

.DISCUSSION...An area of moderate stratiform rain was centered
over Humboldt and Del Norte counties early Wednesday afternoon,
with another area of moderate rain spreading north across the NRN
Sacramento Valley. Short term model guidance shows lapse rates
steepening this evening as a cold midlevel airmass spreads east
with a progressive upper wave. Ascent and destabilization with the
wave will aid in an increase in shower coverage and intensity.
Thunderstorms will also be possible through late tonight, some of
which could produce locally gusty winds and small hail.
Going into Thursday...a quasi-zonal deep-layer baroclinic zone is
forecast to extend westward from the EKA CWA. Strong westerly
moisture flux with IVT values near 600 kg/m/s will impact the
north-south oriented coast mountains of NWRN CA during Thursday
afternoon. This will subsequently yield a period of heavy
rainfall. In addition, a tight southerly surface pressure gradient
combined with a SWLY LLJ in excess of 50 kt will support the
potential for gusts locally in excess of 60 mph. Reference the
latest high wind watch for more information.
By Thursday evening, a modest frontal wave is forecast to
generally shunt the strongest IVT values south of the area, which
will result in a temporary lull in heavy rainfall. However, rain
is forecast to re-intensify Friday morning as a second frontal
wave refocuses an even stronger zone of IVT (in excess of 700
kg/m/s) over the forecast area. The strong westerly moisture flux
impacting the western mountain slopes of NW CA combined with a
deep warm cloud layer and favorable background ascent will be
highly supportive of heavy rainfall. The second wave will also be
accompanied by another round of strong south winds.
After Friday, an upper-level ridge is forecast to move east
across the west coast during Saturday. Model guidance shows a
front moving east into the ridge, which will likely cause the
front to weaken as it approaches NWRN CA. Thus, impacts with that
feature will likely be negligible. Broad ridging will continue
through Sunday, followed by ridge break down on Monday as upper
troughing occurs over the Gulf of Alaska and NERN PAC. Wet and
windy weather will subsequently return to NWRN CA as a series of
frontal waves move east across the region during early to middle
portions of next week.

.AVIATION...A stormed system brought adverse flight conditions to
the region today. An associated cold front pushed ashore by early
afternoon accompanied by strong southerly winds, low Cigs and
heavy rains. Probable LLWS conditions remained into early
afternoon. Late afternoon and evening models continued to show the
potential for thunderstorms. Therefore, VCTS remains in the TAF:
The best chance looks to be along the coast and over the waters,
but have them in Ukiah as well. A secondary front will approach on
Thanksgiving morning bringing another bout of showers and even
stronger gusty winds. Some LLWS will naturally occur along front,
but boundary level winds are in excess of 55 mph in the northern
most flying areas "outside" of front/showers. Therefore, will call
special attention to TAFs by adding another round of LLWS.

.MARINE...South winds persist across the coastal zones today and
this afternoon, weakening slightly and shifting westward overnight
before quickly accelerating out of the south again early
Thanksgiving morning. Maximum winds will be in the northern
waters, between 30 and 40 kt with gusts to 45 kt, and a gale
warning has been issued in response for Thursday. Rain and
isolated thunderstorms may occur during this time. These winds
should quickly weaken in the northern waters by Thursday evening.
Early tomorrow morning the southern waters drop out of SC advisory
conditions for about six hours before the southerly winds
strengthen again, bringing back SC advisory conditions through at
least tomorrow evening. Westerly winds will most likely strengthen
again across all outer waters Friday morning but overall will be
weaker than Thursday. Beyond Friday, maximum winds look to stay
below 15kt for outer waters and below 10kt in the inner zones
through the weekend.
Confused seas dominate for the next few days across all zones. As
expected, a new mid period WNW swell is beginning to be felt by
the buoys across the entire forecast area this afternoon. This
swell will continue to fill in through tomorrow evening. This is
joined by a locally driven short period SW windswell, which peaks
around the same time as the WNW swell. Thus, combined seas of 6 to
8 ft at 7 seconds should persist tonight, then quickly building
to 14ft at 9 to 11 seconds tomorrow morning. Seas should begin to
weaken by Saturday morning as the shorter period waves filter out
with the dying south winds, leaving the remnants of this mid
period WNW swell to reign through the weekend. /TDJ

.HYDROLOGY...Showers and thunderstorms will spread across the
area this evening. Thereafter, heavy rainfall and strong south
winds are forecast to develop Thursday afternoon and persist
through Friday. This next round of precipitation will push storm
total rainfall amounts to 2 to 4 inches for most of the region,
with locally higher amounts in excess of 6 inches occurring across
west facing mountain and ridge slopes. Rapid rises on area rivers
will be possible, but river flooding is not expected. However,
heavy rainfall may cause small streams and low-lying urban areas
to flood.

.COASTAL FLOODING...Current tidal anomalies in the vicinity of
Humboldt Bay are around 0.96 feet. Applying that anomaly to the
astronomical tide this Friday of 7.9 feet, combined with strong
southwest winds, a building west swell, and surrounding run-off
due to heavy rainfall may yield minor flooding around Humboldt
Bay, including King Salmon and Jackson Ranch Road.
