.SYNOPSIS...Mild temperatures will continue through Saturday, with
highs in the 60s along the coast, ranging to the 70s to around 80
over the interior. Cooler conditions will then develop Sunday into
early next week as a cold front moves across the region. Rain will
be likely with the front Saturday night into Sunday, with showers
continuing over Del Norte and Humboldt counties during Monday.
Mild and dry conditions will redevelop over the area during mid to
late next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...An upper trough is in the process of digging SEWD
from the Gulf of Alaska to the NERN PAC. Weak ascent and modest
west-southwesterly moisture flux is occurring southeast of the
trough, and is aiding in very light shower development over Del
Norte county and SWRN OR. Shower development will cease tonight as
upper ridging takes place over the west coast. However, a low-
level marine airmass is forecast to spread east toward coastal
NWRN CA, which may yield stratus and drizzle tonight into
Saturday morning.
A surface frontal boundary associated with the previously
mentioned trough is forecast to impact NWRN CA Saturday night.
Gusty south winds and light to moderate rainfall are expected
along and ahead of the front, which will transition to westerly
winds and continued post frontal shower development during Sunday.
Model guidance also indicates up to 100-200 J/kg of SBCAPE
will develop behind the front Sunday into Monday. However,
forecast soundings show EL temperatures will be near -10 C, which
will be too warm for charge separation and subsequent thunderstorm
development.
Later next week...pronounced upper ridging is forecast to occur
over the NERN PAC Tuesday through Friday...which may yield periods
of high-level cloudiness spilling southeast across the region.
Otherwise, the ridge will result in a large-scale pattern
favorable for dry/gusty north-northeast winds and moderating
temperatures by mid to late next week.

.AVIATION...Forecasting challenges reside mainly over coastal Del
Norte county where CEC continues to be plagued by lowering cigs.
Some light shower activity is also present within the area but any
reduction in vsbys due to showers should reside well north of the
orca border. Southern coastal area are mainly vfr as some light
cirrus is present but lower clouds remain well off the coast. Thus
vfr conditions are expected to continue there as well as across
the interior. All coastal areas may see cigs and vsbys lower
tonight once again to mvfr and briefly ifr near sunrise.

.MARINE...Generally light winds persist throughout the waters,
which has allowed a 9 to 10 ft westerly swell to dominate seas.
This swell was expected to subside this morning but reports are
still carrying heights around 9-10 ft so have extended the sca
another 6 hours. Once the swell finally falls below criteria it
should remain there until late Sunday before an approaching cold
front reinforces the westerly swell and brings in a more southerly
wind. As a result, significant wave heights will build to around
12 or 13 feet Sunday and Monday. Winds will switch to the north
and increase Tuesday and beyond, particularly south of Cape
Mendocino. The westerly swell will gradually decay through the
week, seas in these southern areas will likely become steeper and
remain 10 feet or larger through the week.

.FIRE WEATHER...Mild daytime temperatures and good to moderate
overnight RH recoveries are expected through Saturday. Rain
chances will increase across most of the area Saturday night
into Sunday, with the heaviest precipitation expected over Del
Norte and northern Humboldt counties. Farther south over Mendocino
county, rainfall will be relatively light, which will promote
drier fuels that may support elevated fire weather conditions as
RH values lower with the development of gusty north-northeast
winds during mid to late next week.
