AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 231 PM PDT Wed Aug 29 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Below normal temperatures inland and persistent coastal clouds will last through Thursday. Warmer inland temperatures and more sunshine along the coast can be expected Friday into the weekend. && .DISCUSSION...Southerly flow offshore over the coastal waters has been disrupting the stratus cloud field along the coast today. Expect stratus to slowly fill back in over coastal areas this afternoon and evening. The marine layer has been moderately deep, around 3000 feet per a pilot report. Thus, expect low clouds to redevelop across the interior river valleys tonight into the morning hours of Thursday. Expect below normal temperatures to continue in the interior on Thursday as a trough aloft slowly transitions across the region. Friday through the weekend, an upper ridge will pump up offshore on Friday after another upper level trough passes across the Pacific Northwest. Stronger northerly winds offshore over the coastal waters should result in decreasing stratus and greater sunshine for coastal areas for the afternoon and evening hours. Stratus will probably still regrow each night, but it will likely be shallower with less inland protrusion as air temperatures aloft warm and the inversion lowers. We are expecting a warming trend this weekend as the offshore ridge builds closer to the coast. High temperatures should return to normal or above seasonal averages in the interior. Sunday looks like the hottest day, with some of the guidance pointing toward mid to upper 90s for interior valley hot spots like Ukiah and Weaverville. Early to mid next week, another trough pushing across the Pacific Northwest early next week may result in temperatures taking a step back down, but overall next week looks warmer than this week. Outside of the occasional morning with coastal drizzle, dry weather is expected to continue through mid next week. && .AVIATION...A firmly established marine layer continued along the coast today. Associated stratus clouds were impacted by a passing trough aloft, which caused a deeper marine layer with tops around 3000 feet. Early morning IFR CIGS quickly breached MVFR by mid- morning with mostly VFR VIS. Even so, southerly and onshore flow will help to maintain stratus along the immediate coast...especially in Del Norte. An Eddy off the Humboldt Bay to Trinidad Coast caused periods of scattering with ACV reporting in/out MVFR CIGS from late morning into early afternoon. Some occasional IFR conditions were also rotating onto the Humboldt Coast which impacted ACV. Early morning Satellite pictures also showed widespread clearing along the Mendocino Coast, but marine stratus started to refill along the coast by 12 noon. Through the TAF period, the marine layer will remain quite expansive, so stratus CIGS will not only blanket the coast again, but maintain or dip down to IFR/LIFR at ACV and CEC airports. Inland locations: Spanish mountain webcam and a satellite picture this morning showed plenty of low clouds hanging over the UKI valley; the clouds were mostly north of the airport and were not reported by the UKI ASOS. Most interior locations will remain VFR except for a few areas due to smoke incursions from wildfires. && .MARINE...Mariners should be prepared for deteriorating marine conditions late this week into the weekend. A weak pressure field will maintain light winds over the waters through Thursday. Winds will gradually shift front light southerly across much of the waters today to light northerly during the day on Thursday. A deepening trough moving through the Pacific Northwest Thursday night into Friday will result in lowering pressure over the interior of California and a tightening of the pressure gradient over the coastal waters. Winds will ramp up Friday into Saturday with near gale force gusts developing possibly as early as Saturday evening. The wind fields will fluctuate around near gale through the early half of next week with gale conditions possible in the outer waters. Very steep seas will develop in response to the persistent north winds. The current forecast calls for 9-10 ft foot seas in the outer waters beginning on Sunday into early next week but there is a good possibility that seas will be larger than this and the forecast will be trended up if the model guidance remains consistent. /RPA && .FIRE WEATHER...Warmer and drier conditions are expected this weekend. The thermal trough near the coast this weekend will probably result in gusty E-NE ridge level winds for Del Norte county and perhaps the higher terrain of Humboldt county.
