AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 227 PM PDT Wed Aug 22 2018 .SYNOPSIS...A storm track emanating out of Alaska will aid in slightly below normal temperatures during the next seven days. Otherwise, smoke will persist across the region through the work week. && .DISCUSSION...Widespread stratus was observed along the coast and points offshore Wednesday afternoon. In addition, a sufficiently deep marine layer combined with a weak southerly pressure gradient over southern Mendocino County has recently aided in nightly bouts of stratus in the vicinity of Ukiah. Current observations and short term model guidance indicate stratus will redevelop over the Russian River valley tonight, and then dissipate once again during Thursday afternoon. Otherwise, model guidance indicates a series of upper troughs will dig from Alaska southeastward across the NWRN CONUS during the next seven days. This flow regime will favor slightly below normal temperatures across the interior...with highs generally in the 70s and 80s. Elsewhere, onshore flow will maintain a cool marine airmass across the coast with highs in the 50s and 60s. Large-scale subsidence is expected to preclude rainfall throughout the forecast period...with the exception of non- accumulating drizzle associated with marine stratus. && .AVIATION...Coastal stratus has remained along the entire coast again today. As of 2 pm there was a bit of clearing occurring along and just north of Cape Mendocino. It is possible that this isolated slot of clearing will move across Humboldt Bay/ACV and potentially lead to a short period of clearing later this afternoon. Elsewhere, stratus will continue through this evening along the coast with smoky conditions inland. For this evening, ceilings and visibilities will drop back down to IFR to LIFR conditions yet again by late this evening. Marine depth is still a bit deeper to our south as depicted from the Bodega Bay profiler. With southerly winds also ongoing expect stratus to make it back into UKI by early tomorrow morning. && .MARINE...Light to moderate southerly to southwesterly winds will persist through this evening across the waters. By early Thursday morning winds will switch around from the north yet again and begin to increase in intensity as the day goes on.
