.SYNOPSIS...Dry weather Will continue through Sunday with rain
expected to return on Monday. Periods of rain will continue
through much of the week. Cooler temperatures and lower snow
levels are expected late in the week.

.DISCUSSION...High pressure is in place over the west coast this
afternoon. Water vapor imagery shows an approaching frontal
boundary well off the coast. Mainly clear skies will continue
through Sunday, although the interior valleys will likely see
patchy fog again tonight. Above normal afternoon temperatures are
expected to continue.
Sunday night into Monday morning the rain starts to arrive. The
models have slowed down the system slightly and the weak wave
ahead of the front is weaker. This means rain will generally be
light to moderate Monday morning. The heavier rain associated with
the main front is expected to be in the afternoon or evening
along the coast and move inland during the evening. Gusty winds
are expected to peak along the front as well. The strongest winds
are expected over the ridges with gusts peaking around 50 MPH with
gusts to 40 mph on exposed coastal headlands. Snow levels with
the main front will be over 7,000 feet.
Monday night into Tuesday the upper level trough moves through
the area. This will bring numerous showers to the area and falling
snow levels. Snow levels are expected to drop to around 3500 to
4500 feet by Tuesday afternoon. The showers will be much more
numerous in the northern portion of the area. There is the
potential for some small hail on the coastal plain in Humboldt and
Del Norte counties, but the most recent NAM and GFS only have
H500 MB temperatures dropping to -30C. This should be cold enough
to produce some small hail, but not widespread accumulations on
roadways. Tuesday night the showers will come to an end.
Wednesday current model runs are now keeping the warm front
northwest of the area, but the next cold front is now moving in
late Wednesday afternoon and evening. Snow levels will again be
high with this initial front, over 7,000 feet. Wind gusts with
this next system could peak near 45 mph over the ridges of
Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Thursday the upper level trough
behind the front moves over the area. Potentially this could drop
snow levels through the day to around 3,000 feet by late
afternoon. Thursday night and Friday could see significant snow
amounts at pass levels. Showers look to diminish on Saturday with

.AVIATION...Clouds hung in the valley around KUKI until late this
morning, but these have since cleared and partly to mostly sunny
skies prevail with high cloudiness. There is a fog bank evident on
visible satellite imagery near and off the Mendocino Coast. S winds
may advect this up and around the Cape this evening, but its impacts
on Redwood Coast TAF sites remain uncertain. Low-level flow should
become more offshore overnight. For now, have kept these sites
mostly VFR overnight with some evening MVFR at KACV. Uncertainty is
moderate to high with this forecast. KUKI is expected to remain
mostly VFR overnight, but there may be some patch, shallow ground

waters tonight and increase to advisory criteria by midday on
Sunday. Have hoisted a Small Craft Advisory for that time for all
but the S inner waters. These were left out because the onset is
still a bit too far in the future. Southerlies will continue to
increase late Sunday night and Monday with gale force gusts likely
in the N outer waters. A Gale Watch has been issued for that
area, in effect from early Monday morning through Monday evening.
Winds will decrease again Monday night.
W swell will continue to very gradually subside through early
Sunday. Larger W swell is forecast to enter the coastal waters by

will bring combined seas to 14 to 17 feet by Monday with breakers
building to over 20 feet. This will be close to High Surf Advisory
criteria, and this will need to be monitored. Much larger W swell is
forecast to build into the waters by Thursday, and high surf

.SURF ZONE...Conditions are ripe for what is shaping up to be a
high risk day for sneaker waves on Sunday. A 22 second period
westerly swell is expected to arrive along NW CA beaches as early as
Sunday morning. The wave system will coincide with some relatively
warm and sunny weather during the weekend, which coastal areas have
not seen in several days. Thus an increase in beach visitors is
likely. Initially the wave environment will look deceivingly calm
but it is that false sense of security which history has proved to
be dangerous for non-alert visitors near the immediate shoreline.
Folks are urged to exercise extreme caution when visiting area
beaches, jetties, and rock outcroppings on Sunday. See the Beach
