AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 311 PM PDT Thu May 17 2018 .SYNOPSIS...A few showers across the interior mountains will dissipate this evening. Elsewhere, cloudy and cooler than normal conditions will continue. Friday and Saturday will feature mainly dry weather with possible afternoon clearing for coastal areas. && .DISCUSSION...Currently looking at one more afternoon and evening of isolated showers over the interior mountains before upper-level high pressure temporarily builds in heading into Friday and the weekend. Would not totally rule out a stray lightning strike with a stronger cell over Trinity county, but honestly do not expect it, as drier and more stable air looks to be taking over. Friday and Saturday...A transient building ridge of high pressure will likely be enough to severely limit shower activity thus a brief period of drier and slightly warmer conditions are expected across the interior. At the coast, a deep marine layer is keeping coastal stratus in place, but northerly winds have started to clear out areas downwind of Cape Mendocino and Cape Blanco, including Crescent City. The next couple of afternoons may hold more promise for partial afternoon clearing along the rest of the coast as drier and more mixed air may have a greater influence on the boundary layer. By Sunday and through early next week, shower chances across the interior mountains will steadily increase as another low pressure system approaches, this time arriving from the northwest as opposed to the southwest. Uncertainty is very high regarding the timing and coverage of these showers as there is quite a bit of uncertainty regarding the track of the low. Overall though, shower chances will be greatest toward the end of the weekend and early next week, and as usual this time of year will be concentrated across interior mountain ranges. Temperatures throughout this time period will remain mild and pleasant inland, and seasonably cool within the marine layer near the coast. && .AVIATION...Plenty of low cloudiness continued across the flying area, even as influence from an upper level trof departs the region. A deep marine layer also continued with morning Cigs IFR- MVFR...then MVFR-VFR in the afternoon at coastal locations. A 1:22 PM pilot report out of ACV reported cloud base Ovc030 & cloud top037. Concur with previous discussion that moist boundary layer conditions will continue overnight. Therefore, the marine layer will remain persistent with Cigs/Vis mostly MVFR, but dipping locally into IFR...especially vicinity of EKA to ACV airport. Low clouds at UKI dissipated quite early today, so the any marine influence should be limited with most model guidance expecting VFR conditions Friday morning. /TA && .MARINE...Northerly winds will continue to pick up this evening and persist through the weekend with steeper seas eventually building to 6 to 8 feet south of Cape Mendocino, thus have issued a small craft advisory for the southern outer waters. Heading into next week, winds may increase another 5 to 10 kt with seas approaching 10 ft.
