.SYNOPSIS...Pleasant spring day across Northwest CA today
as high pressure weakens ahead of an approaching front. Increasing
clouds later tonight with light rain expected across most of the
region by mid morning on Tuesday. A stronger storm system will
impact the region during Wednesday and Thursday, resulting in
additional moderate rain and light mountain snow. Drier weather
is expected Friday and Saturday, followed by another weather
system on Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...An upper level ridge was centered over the West
Coast early this morning as weak surface high pressure was
positioned beneath the ridge. The ridge of high pressure is
dissipating, and will allow a front to approach from the west.
A somewhat weak front...this feature will move east across the
area late tonight into Tuesday morning...associated with a brief
period of mainly light rain over much of the region ending in the
afternoon. Thereafter, a more dynamic storm system will impact
the region Wednesday and Thursday. Widespread moderate frontal
rains appear probable Wednesday morning and afternoon. The front
will exit east Wednesday night. Behind the front, temperatures
aloft will rapidly cool. Lapse rates will subsequently steepen and
aid in a weakly unstable airmass, which may be sufficient for an
isolated thunderstorm and coastal hail as a midlevel wave moves
across the region Wednesday night. In addition, snow levels are
forecast to fall to around 3000 feet. The lowering snow levels
combined with modest large- scale ascent and westerly upslope flow
will support light snowfall near highway pass levels. Showers
and possible light mountain snow are forecast to persist into
Thursday afternoon, and then dissipate Thursday night. Dry and
mild conditions will then become likely Friday and Saturday,
followed by additional frontal rains on Sunday. JG/JT

.AVIATION...Mostly pleasant conditions persisted across local air
terminals and small airfields today under a ridge of high pressure.
Therefore, VFR weather continued except for brief haze reports
this morning at ACV & CEC airports. Vis briefly dropped to IFR at
both locations. A change in weather will begin overnight as an
approaching cold front will be preceded by increasing clouds and
southerly winds tonight. Rain will spread into the region Tuesday
morning also with some lowering Cigs and Vis obstructions. LLWS
(typical along fronts) is a possible flight hazard to coastal
aviation sites as the cold front moves ashore. /TA

.MARINE...As a cold front approaches tonight, a period of southerly
winds will reach small craft advisory levels across the outer waters
once again, with building steep, short-period seas lingering much of
Tuesday. After a brief break Tuesday night, a stronger front will
approach on Wednesday, with another quick shot of 20-30 knot
southerly winds. Wind will become westerly Wednesday night into
Thursday while easing. However, a large west-northwesterly swell
will arrive and build into Thursday, with combined seas reaching 14
to 18 feet. High pressure will finally build in by the weekend, with
